Doubling!!

Objective: The objective of this lesson is to provide further scaffolding to help

students grasp the concept of doubling.

Goal: Many of my students are still not grasping the concept of doubling. The goal
of this lesson is to provide my students with further scaffolding in order to help
them succeed. Reflecting back upon my previous lessons, I perhaps did not provide
enough visuals/hands on activities for students, so therefore this lesson is
intended to provide that.

SLO:

- 1.1.1.9.c (modelling addition through manipulatives)

- 1.1.1.10.c (doubles)

Assessment: As students are working through the activities, I will mainly focus on
conversing with the students who I know are struggling with the concept. When
conversing with these students I will focus on developing their numeric literacy of
doubling.

Intro:

- Subitize 8 (a double!!!!!) Make a big deal about this!!

- Gather students on carpet and review the important things about doubling.
-
o What is a double?
o How do we know a number is a double?
o Why is this a double, and this isnt? (4, 5, 6 ,7)
o Do some examples

Body:

- Secret Agent Doubles assignment!

o Each student will be given an envelope that contains a number and the
same number of counters.
o Students will then get an office, so that they can be more secretive
(even though its not really all that secretive). They will also get a
sheet of blank paper in which to put their counters on.
o Students will then put all their counters on their blank sheet, and split
them equally to make two equal groups. Do an example on the board
put counters into two separate groups.
o Then hand out double agent recording sheets. PUT NAME ON! Each
student must go around and look at the doubles on the desks,
recording the persons name that corresponds to the double on the
sheet. Ex. The person with two groups of 4 counters would then have
their name placed by the 8 on the recording sheet.
o PUT SPY MUSIC ON!
o Once finished, have students place their counters back into their
envelopes, let them attempt to fold their recording sheets and have
them place them in their envelopes.

Conclusion:

- Have students return to carpet.

o Thank them for being awesome secret double agents!
o Part of being an awesome double agent is understanding doubles.
o Ask students:
What did you see on the desks? (equal groups)
What are some important things to remember about doubles?
Focus on the how and the why.

** If time, start hidden doubles surprise pamphlet.

Reflection:

WOW!!!! The students absolutely had a blast during the Secret Agent
doubles activity. Engagement was the highest I have seen yet in math, and I
attribute this to the creativeness of the activity, as well as its hands on and visual
characteristics. Because several of my students took a focussed and independent
approach to the activity (due to a high level of engagement), I was able to spend
one on one time with the students I wanted to target. With these students I
pushed them to verbally extend their understanding of doubles. Two of the
targeted students excelled.
