Lesson Objective(s)/Performance Outcomes
SWBAT identify and explain the difference between symmetrical and
nonsymmetrical objects and pattern designs.
SWBAT design their own symmetrical monster by weaving the torso with an
assortment of colorful yarn.
SWBAT design the symmetrical monsters body parts by cutting out different
shapes from colored construction paper and gluing them down on background
paper.
SWBAT define and identify the areas of pattern, as well as, balance within their
symmetrical monster.

Assessment (Description/Criteria)
Students knowledge and understanding will be assessed during classroom
discussions on the topics of weaving, symmetry, color, pattern, balance and
shapes.
Students understanding will be assessed during the activities when the teacher
walks the room for knowledge checks and when the students turn in their finish
project. PowerPoint

Activities/Procedures
Students will be introduced to the weaving technique and vocabulary (loom, warp,
weft and shuttle) with a short informational presentation/ PowerPoint. During this
presentation woven products such as rugs, baskets and clothing are discussed.
The Navajo Indian rugs and African woven baskets are discussed and the
symmetrical balance of each object is mentioned. Students will also be reminded
how to tie a knot during the presentation.
A quick demonstration on the weaving process will be given.
Students will create their own weaving on a cardboard loom to create the
monsters torso. When the torso is complete the weaving will be taken off of the
loom and the ends will be tied. The weaving will be glued to the middle of the
poster board.
Once the students weaving is glued to the poster board they will be given an
assortment of colored construction paper, scissors and a glue stick. Students will
be shown an example of a finished project.
A classroom discussion will be held on the different shapes that could create each
body part and an overview of the term symmetrical. During this overview the
students will be asked the following questions: what does symmetrical mean? If
both sides of the monster are the same then both legs, arms, eyes, and all other
body parts will be exactly the same shape and color? When you are cutting out a

shape for the arm, how many of these shapes do you need to cut out? There is one
arm on the right side and one arm on the left side, 1 + 1=?
A short demonstration will be held to show the students the technique of folding
the paper in half and cutting the shape in order to two of the same shapes that are
the same color.
Students will be informed to glue down the body part shapes as soon as they cut
them out to insure that they are not lost.
