FAQ: CCNA R&S Instructor Trainer Qualification

Effective: February 2016

It is critical to have quality Instructor Trainers within Cisco Networking Academy. Our Instructor Trainers can
provide the best knowledge transfer to our instructor community, thus the importance of having a comprehensive
qualification process.

This document provides answers to frequently asked questions about the Cisco Networking Academy CCNA R&S
Instructor Trainer Qualification (ITQ) process.

Q1. What are the pre-requisites to become an Instructor Trainer candidate?


A. The candidate must be eligible to teach all four CCNA R&S courses and have taught at least one Networking
Academy class in the last 12 months with a minimum of three students.

Q2. How do I become an Instructor Trainer candidate?


A. Contact your CSR Manager or your Instructor Training Center (ITC) for details. To locate your CSR Manager
contact the Networking Academy Global Support Desk for assistance.

Q3. What is included in the Instructor Trainer Qualification (ITQ) process?


A. The Instructor Trainer Qualification is a two (2) step process. Candidates must first successfully pass an
online Pre-test or have a valid CCNA R&S or higher certification and secondly attend the final qualification
phase.

Q4. If an Instructor Trainer candidate fails the Pre-test, can they take the Pre-test again?
A. Yes; however, a candidate must wait a period of three (3) months before attempting the Pre-test again.

Q5. What are the components of the final qualification phase?


A. If a candidate passes the Pre-test or has a valid CCNA R&S or higher certification, they will be invited to
attend the final qualification phase. The final qualification phase consists of a Packet Tracer Skills Based
Assessment, teach-back presentation and technical Q&A.

Q6. Where does the proctored final qualification phase take place?
A. The CCNA R&S ITQ is conducted both virtually and in-person. In-person locations vary. The Technical
Manager will determine the best location.

Q7. Who conducts the Instructor Trainer Qualification process?


A. ITQs are conducted by Technical Managers.

Q8. When are the results revealed?


A. Results are sent to the Instructor Trainer candidate within thirty (30) business days. A customized score
report is provided highlighting the Instructor Trainer candidates strength and areas for development.

Q9. If the Instructor Trainer candidate fails the Instructor Trainer Qualification, when can they have
another attempt?
A. Instructor Trainer candidates are permitted to retake the Instructor Trainer Qualification; however, they must
wait a period of three (3) months.

Q10. If the Instructor Trainer candidate fails the Instructor Trainer Qualification, do they need to retake the
Pre-test?
A. Yes, an Instructor Trainer candidate will need to complete the Pre-test again or have obtained a CCNA R&S
or higher certification.

Q11. What is required to maintain the Instructor Trainer status?


A. Maintain a valid CCNA R&S certification or higher; teach at least one instructor class every three (3) years
with a minimum of three students or complete equivalent instructor professional development activities; and
maintain an association with an Instructor Training Center (ITC).

Q12. What material will an Instructor Trainer candidate need to know to prepare for the Instructor Trainer
Qualification?
A. Instructor Trainer candidates are responsible for all material found in the CCNA R&S curriculum. This
includes any practical skill that may be required to teach CCNA R&S effectively and resolutions of problems
that may happen in the classroom.

Q13. What instructor classes can be taught after completion of the CCNA R&S Instructor Trainer
Qualification?
A. CCNA R&S: Upon successfully completing the CCNA R&S ITQ, a person is qualified to teach CCNA R&S to
instructors.

A. IT Essentials: A qualified CCNA R&S Instructor Trainer who has completed IT Essentials instructor training
is also qualified to teach IT Essentials to instructors.

A. CCNA Security: A qualified CCNA R&S Instructor Trainer who has completed CCNA Security instructor
training and has a valid CCNA Security certification, is also qualified to teach CCNA Security to instructors.

A. CCNP R&S: A qualified CCNA Instructor Trainer who has successfully completed CCNP instructor training
(CCNP R&S: Route, Switch and Tshoot or CCNP R&S IFT) and has a valid CCNP certification, is also
qualified to teach CCNP R&S: Route, Switch and Tshoot courses to instructors. CCNP R&S certification
requires passing all three (3) CCNP R&S certification exams.

Q14. Can any instructor participate in the Instructor Trainer Qualification process?
A. All Instructor Trainer candidates must be associated to or sponsored by an ITC before signing up for the
Instructor Trainer Qualification process. Contact your ITC or CSR Manager for details.

Q15. Who do I contact if I have questions about the CCNA R&S Instructor Trainer Qualification?
A. Contact you regions Technical Manager if you have questions about CCNA R&S Instructor Trainer
Qualification.
