ARTIST STATEMENT
What is an artist statement?
Your artist statement is about facts, a basic introduction to your art; it's not instructions
on what to experience, what to think, how to feel, how to act, or where to stand, and if it
is, you better do a rewrite. Please answer the questions below & then compose your
artist statement in paragraph form. The artist statement should be 3-5 paragraphs
including 3-5 sentences each.
I make art to express myself, tell about myself, and just for fun. My artwork is
inspired by things I like and do.
2. How did you choose your logo idea? What was your thought process on your
designs?
I chose this logo idea because I knew from the beginning that I wanted to use a
leaf. I also knew that I wanted to incorporate my name somehow, so I decided to
break up the leaf into pieces, so the negative space creaked an M. Then, I chose to
use a 3D effect and shadows to create depth. Last, I chose to fill it with and
orange/yellow gradient because those are my favorite colors and they fit with the
fall/leaf theme.
My logo and trademark mean a lot to me because they represent me and are
unique to me. I was able to incorporate my initials and favorite color.
4. Explain your symbolism. What does each part signify &/or represent?
I chose a leaf because it represents fall, which is my favorite season. The leaf is
broken into pieces because the negative space creates an M which represents my
name. I chose to use orange and yellow because those are my favorite colors.
6. What tool/technique did you like the best that you used to create your logo?
My favorite tool that I used in creating this logo was the gradient tool. I used
gradients to fill the main leaf pieces. I liked this tool because I could experiment
with how different colors worked together and the direction the gradient went. I
also used the gradient tool to create depth with white/grey shadows.
7. What was the most challenging part about creating a logo from scratch?
The most challenging part about creating this logo was coming up with an idea.
During the brainstorming process, I was trying to make objects out of letters and
the only thing I could see out of an s was a whale. So, I just scrapped the s and
decided to work on an m.
9. Were you able to transform your idea into a graphic? Or did your plan change?
Yes, I was able to transform my idea into a graphic. The only part about my plan
that changed was the use of colors. My original plan was to make the whole leaf
piece a gradient, but I decided to use little triangles and make small gradient
sections.
I incorporated detail in the outline of the leaf shape. It is a very intricate shape, so I
traced it so it would look detailed.
I used color in my graphic to fill the leaf pieces. I made the whole background one
gradient of red/orange/yellow. Then I made triangles using the same gradient. I
placed the triangles over top and changed the angle of the gradient, so they would
look like they were blending.
The most successful part of my logo was filling it with color. I am satisfied with the
way it turned out.
The part that needs the most work is making it appear as 3D. I was having trouble
with the 3D bevel tool, so I had to create the effect on my own and it didnt turn
out as well as it could have.

Artist Statement-
My logo and trademark mean a lot to me because they represent me and are
unique to me. I was able to incorporate my initials and favorite color. I chose a leaf
because it represents fall, which is my favorite season. The leaf is broken into
pieces because the negative space creates an M which represents my name. I

connects to my trademark because they both include a leaf and an M, which are
the most important parts.

colors to fill. I used value to make the shadows giving the leaf a 3D effect.
