ENG 2DI

To Kill a Mockingbird Unit

Pre Reading Research Activity
Assignment Form

Preamble
In order to get into this novel it is of interest for us to gather some background information. Consider
that the novel was published over fifty years ago and is set in the 1930s; that is quite far removed from our
current society. Not only does the time periodpresent a potential challenge, but the language, general societal
values, as well as reading from the view point of a child present some readers with difficulty. We can alleviate
some of that difficulty by developing an understanding of some of the CONTEXT behind the story.

Process
~In your group you will have one complete period to gather research in the library related to your topic.
~You will have the following period in a computer lab to assemble an organized five minute group presentation.
~These presentations will take place shortly after on __________________.

Details
LIBRARY PERIOD
~Meet with your group and decide how you will focus your research. You may decide, as a group, to split up
the question and gather research individually, or, to work in partners and search different resources together.
~Gather information related to your topic. The topic assignment forms ask some very specific questions that
you may or may not use in your presentation. The questions are there to direct your research, but you are
welcome to use information that is not found from answering these questions, as long as the information is
relevant and further develops your topic.
~Use at least one print resource and at least one electronicresource as well. Use at least three separate
sources in all to gather your information.
~Record key points found in the organizer and submit this at the end of the research period.
IN CLASS PREP PERIOD
~I will return your research organizer and you will have the period to organize your presentation.
~Your group will be provided with an overhead template that you will fill in with key concepts. This is the only
visual that is required for this presentation.
~Plan and practice your presentation.
PRESENTATION PERIOD
~Groups will present.
~In your notes keep a record of key points that groups are covering as these will provide context at certain
points throughout the novel unit.

Requirements
~Search for and record information and the sources the information was gathered from.
~Deliver a brief, yet thorough presentation that will inform your peers of the information you have gathered.
~All members of the group are to stand and orally present information to the class.

Assessment
You are being evaluated for your ability to collaborate effectively during the research and planning stages. You
will be getting specific feedback related to your presentation skills as formative assessment that will help you in
planning for later presentations.
