Fossil Unit Final Assessment

Day 1: Students will write about the discovery of the animal and what they believe
it is based on the evidence. It will be written as a lab write up.
Day 2: Students will create a collection of fossils from an extinct animal that they
discovered. The collection will be able to tell viewers what food they may have
eaten, how they traveled, what the environment was like, and what classification
the animal fell in.
Day 3: Students will display their fossils in a gallery walk. Each student will spend 5
minutes at each fossil site to analyze the evidence left behind. They will then
write down what they believe is to be true about the animal on the slip of paper at
the site and then will drop it into a bucket. Students will visit each fossil site.
Day 3 (during math): Students will then go to their fossil sites, empty the buckets
and begin to make charts for each category on the slip of paper to record the data
collected.
Day 4: Students will get into groups based on the classification of their animal.
Once in their new groups, students will share their data.
Questions to talk about at this time:
Did classmates guess a different kind of animal? Why might this be?
What could you have done to make it more distinct?
What is similar/different between the fossils in the group?

After discussions, students will turn in their work.

Students will be able to take work home and share it with family members.
