Description of how to implement in the class:
This lesson is designed to help students learn how to analyze data by gathering information relevant
to their lives and exploring the significance of their findings. Students will gather information from 8
females and 8 males regarding the number of hours per week that they spend studying. Students will
then enter their data into an Excel spreadsheet and use the tools present in Excel to create a pivot
table and bar graph of their data. Using these tools will allow students to have a firsthand experience
in using software that professional statisticians use in the field.

When students create these tables and graphs, they are able to visualize the data collected and better
analyze and interpret their findings. All of the procedures for using excel will be outlined in class, and
students are expected to create detailed notes to follow as they perform the required procedures.
Once all of the tables and graphs are created, students will provide a 1-2 paragraph write-up
interpreting their results. These results will be presented to the class.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi):
This is a LoTi 3 assignment because students are not just plugging in values and creating a final
product, but they are experiencing what professional statisticians do on a daily basis and are able to
follow some of the same steps as they do when analyzing data. Students will work together by
comparing their data and see trends in skewedness and other important statistical aspects. Along
with understanding statistical concepts, students have an opportunity to perform their own analysis
and evaluation of their findings, raising the LoTi level from a 1-2 to a 3.
Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *:
The chart is a visual representation of the average number of hours males spend studying per week
compared to females. It uses data from a sample and shows what students will create and analyze.
The process would be outlined for the students.
