Incident: Play dough Table

Jordan walked from the science area over to the kidney shaped table by the computer area where
N.B, S.M, and V.M were playing with red play dough. Jordan pulled out a red chair from table
and sat down in front of a blue plastic tray with a ball of play dough. He reached across the table
into the play dough toy container and pulled out a clear heart shape cookie cutter with a short red

handle. Jordan placed the cookie down on his tray reaching back into the container and pulled
out a small red plastic knife. He placed the knife down on his tray and reached into the container
again. He swirled his hand around inside the play dough toy container two times then pulled out
a pair of yellow plastic scissors. Jordan closed his fingers into a fist and smashed down the ball
of play dough with a smile on his face. Jordan picked up the scissors from the tray with his left
hand. He placed his right hand index finger and middle finger into the right handle of the
scissors. He placed his left hand index finger and middle finger into the left handle of the
scissor. Jordan raised both hands holding the scissor up and pointed the scissor tip down. He
swiftly moved the scissor down into the play dough. Jordan opened and closed the scissors in
the play dough with both of his fingers in each side of the scissor handles. Jordan opened and
closed the scissors four times and then placed the scissors down on the tray. Jordan reached
across the table into the play dough toy container with his right hand and pulled out a fish shaped
cookie cutter. Jordan reached across the table his right hand holding the fish cookie cutter and
placed it on N.B tray. Jordan then picked up the red knife from his tray with his right hand. He
held the knife with his whole hand around the knife handle. He raised the knife up and quickly
moved it down into the play dough. Jordan raised the knife up from the play dough and then
moved it down into the play dough several times. Jordan placed the play dough knife down on
the left side of his tray on the table and picked of a small chunk of play dough from his tray. He
placed the piece of play dough in between his palms and moved his hands in a circular motion.
Jordan stopped moving his hands together and he turned both hands sideways lifting off his right
hand. Jordan picked up the rounded piece of play dough from his left palm with his right hand
fingers tips. He held it up smiling and opened his fingers dropping the play dough ball onto his
tray. He made a fist with his left hand and smashed the play dough ball until it was flat.
Jordan picked up a large chunk of play dough with his right hand from the tray. He tore a piece
of play dough with his left hand from the large play dough chunk in his right hand. Jordan
pushed the small chunk of play dough into the opening of the handle on the heart cookie cutter
with his index finger and middle finger of his left hand. Jordan continued to hold the play dough
in his right hand and tore another piece off with his left hand. He pushed the play dough into the
opening of the cookie cutter with two fingers from his left hand. He placed the play dough in his
right hand on the tray and said Teacher, I am done. He stood up and walked over to the sink to
wash his hands.

Comment:
Jordan manipulated the play dough with both hands and alternated the use of his hands. He had
difficulty operating the scissors in the correct way. He held the scissor in by the handle with two
fingers from each handle with the blades facing down and used his fingers to open and close the
blades. Jordan was able to coordinate both of his hands in a circular motion to form a play
dough ball from a small chunk of play dough. He experimented dropping the play dough ball
onto his tray.

LEARNING PRESCRIPTION

Childs Name Jordan Martinez Age 3 Date 11/28/2016

Areas of Strength and Confidence

1. Jordan is able to manipulate an object with both hands. He held a large

piece of play dough in his right hand and tore pieces off with his left hand.

2. Jordan shares materials with others. He took a fish shaped cookie cutter

from the play dough toy container and placed it on the tray of the child

sitting across the table from him without adult prompting.

3. Jordan used hand and eye coordination to roll a small chunk of play dough

into a ball. He placed the play dough in between both of his palms and

moved his hands in a circular motion.

Areas Needing Strengthening

1.
ANECDOTAL RECORD AND LEARNING PRESCRIPTION 4

Jordan needs to strengthen his hold/grasp. He held the play dough knife handle with a fisted

grasp when piercing the play dough.

2.

Jordan needs to develop his cutting skills. He held the scissors from the handle using his index

finger and middle finger from both hands

3. Jordan needs to develop hand dominance when manipulating objects.

Jordan switches from using his left hand to using his right hand when

manipulating play dough and play dough toys.

Activities to Help

1. I would incorporate more fine motor activities in the daily lesson plan. I

would provide activities like lacing and using tongs of different sizes to pick

up small and big items like pom poms (big and small), buttons, beadsetc.

2. I would also incorporate fine motor activities in the classroom that

encourage Jordan to cross his midline on his body to strengthen his hand

dominance. One activity would be using a large spoon to scoop objects from

one container to another. The containers would be placed on opposite sides.

3. An activity the can be done in the classroom and school is using clothes

pin to pick up small soft items. This activity would encourage Jordan to use

his fingers to open and close the clothes pin.
