O
n the heels of the Oscars, I considered
penning a feel-good Hollywood script about
an idyllic small town that would make a hit
movie. The plot started like this: Against all odds, a
group of volunteer visionaries raises a ton of money
to preserve 320 acres of woodlands from bulldozers
and developers that surrounds their quaint, historic
town. After winning that battle, the group pulls-off the
impossible by constructing 18 miles of hiking trails that
literally ring the southern and western edges of their
beloved town. The hiking trail system soon becomes

to this band of super-motivated volunteers who formed
the Jacksonville Woodlands Association 27 years ago,
the creation of our world-class hiking trails really

means that our town is partially ringed in green space,

magnitude. For many, the trail system drew us here, or

Celebrating the Rebirth of
the Beekman Arboretum
W
ith spring all around, come
join us for the 24th Annual
Jacksonville Woodlands
Association Hike-a-Thon and annual
meeting on Saturday, April 15. This year
we will be highlighting the C.C. Beekman
Arboretum. The C.C. Beekman Native
Plant Arboretum occupies a 3-acre,
bowl-like site in the heart of Historic
Jacksonville adjacent to the Beekman
House at the intersection of California
Street and Laurelwood Drive.
For many, many years this area was
left untended. In summer 1997, Alan
Horobin, a long-time member of the
Jacksonville Woodlands Association
and a professional garden designer,
developed a plan for cleaning-up the
area and the development of a native
plant garden and arboretum. The
manicured meandering paths wound
through eight biological habitats of the
Siskiyou Mountains. In addition to more
than twenty varieties of conifer, plant
enthusiasts enjoyed viewing dogwood,
willow, aspen, alder, oak, hawthorn,
cherry, ash, and maple trees. There was
also an impressive list of shrubs and herbs,
all of which were clearly marked. For many
years, volunteers met every Wednesday to
maintain the garden. But over time, as the
seasons changed, the volunteer base faded
and so did the Arboretum.
It spring 2016, after years of minimal
maintenance, the Arboretum sparked the
interest of the Jacksonville Woodland
Association members Kandee McClain
and Becka Kem. For McClain this was
a place to walk and regularly see deer
and other wildlife. For Kem, it became
a place to hike and play with her young
son. Together, they saw the Arboretum
as a gem that held a lot of potential for
all ages to enjoy nature and learn more
about native plants. Over the past year,
with many volunteers and organizations
donating time, energy and resources,
much progress has been made in
restoring the CC Beekman Arboretum to
a destination that people regularly visit.
The theme of this years hike-a-thon,
Hiking for History: C.C. Beekman
Arboretum celebrates this historic
acreage. Come join in this family-friendly
event. Some of the activities include: a
C.C. Beekman Arboretum tour, childrens
activities, brief program and annual
meeting, several hike options and a
picnic lunch provided by Jacqueline
and Jason Williams of Jacksonville
Chiropractic Clinic.
The events start at 9:00am with the
Linda Brodie Water Feature Dedication
followed by a tour of the Arboretum. This
will be a short 15-20 minute guided walk
through the C.C. Beekman Arboretum
highlighting some of the native plants
that grow in our area and the vision for
the C.C. Beekman Arboretum.
The short annual meeting will start at
9:30am. Topics such as the health of the
Jacksonville Woodlands Association, how
to get involved, community outreach,
and recognizing individuals for their
outstanding work will be shared. During
this time there will be childrens activities
and coffee donated by Michael and Mary
Kell of GoodBean Coffee.
At 10:15 the hikes will begin! The C.C.
Beekman Arboretum is the starting point
for hikes. Becka Kem will organize the
family and self-guided hikers. She will
provide a map of the planned, one-mile
loop and verbal instructions. Becka
will also lead a more organized group
for those that want to stay together.
Hikers are encouraged to move at their
own pace and enjoy the woodlands.
Childrens activities and snacks will be
provided after the hike. Lunch will be
served from 11:30am-12:30pm.
Local historian Larry Smith will lead
a three-mile hike through the Beekman
Woods over to the Grove Woods on 3rd
Street and then double-back through
the Beekman Woods. Larry will share
the history of these portions of the
Woodlands and their acquisition history.
They will arrive back in time for lunch at
the Beekman House around noon.

being made at the C.C. Beekman
Arboretum and show your support of
the Jacksonville Woodlands Association.

Live theater returns to town when
the Randall Theatre Company of
Medford moves many of its main stage
offerings to a new Jacksonville location
at the Calvary Church on 5th Street.
The planned expansion is part of a
partnership between the Randall Theatre
and Jacksonville's Calvary Church. The
church will continue holding church
services on Wednesday evenings and
Sunday mornings. Randall Theatre main
stage productions in 2017 will include at
least four other shows, beginning with
the musical On the Town, running
May 5 through 28.
The expansion resulted from
discussions over the past two years
between the Randalls Artistic Director
Robin Downward and Jacksonville
Mayor Paul Becker. Mayor Becker said
reviving live theater in town has been
a longtime goal of his. He noted that
Jacksonville has not had a resident
theater company since the 1980s, when
the Gilded Cage Players melodrama
troupe moved out of
Pioneer Village and
into a converted feed
store in Talent. The
company later folded
and that space became
Actors Theatre
and, eventually, the
Camelot Theatre.
Todays Randall
Theatre Company
is going beyond
melodrama in
bringing live theater
back to Jacksonville.
The Randall will
be producing the
energetic, high-quality
plays and musicals that the theatre is
known for. Generally, shows will run
for one to two months, over the span
of eight months during the theaters
calendar year. Jacksonville show times
will begin at 7:00pm and end by 9:30pm
with Sunday matinees at 2:00pm. Ticket
prices, according to Downward, will
remain in the $18 price range, one of the
best values for live theater in the region.
The theaters famed pay what you can/
want seating program will continue at
the new location, as well.
The move benefits theater-goers,
thanks in-part to a larger auditorium,
more comfortable seating and year-round
heating and air conditioningsomething
the current location in downtown
Medford has struggled to provide.
Downward says that performances will
still be staged in the Medford location
but that the larger ones will take place
in Jacksonville. Seating capacity at the
church location is about 140, although
an ideal number would be closer to 99
to maintain the intimacy the Randall has
become known for.
Mayor Paul Becker says that the move
could not have happened at a better time,
stating, Many people have approached
me about the possibility of Jacksonville
acquiring a theater for live stage
entertainment. When Calvary Church
Pastor Brian Steller learned that the
Randall was looking for a Jacksonville
homewe started talking.
Steller says the church had been
looking at how to make better use
of their building outside of worship
services, but in a way that would
benefit the community. Representatives
from the church and the theater met
several times to work out the details
of the agreement, which became final
on February 17. Under the terms of the
agreement, the church and the theatre
will share the space yet maintain their
own separate identities. Pastor Steller
says the partnership is good for the
church, the theater and the Jacksonville
community. We are excited to network
with Randall Theatre. Though we are
separate organizations and will remain
that way, both of us have a desire to
serve our local community. We believe
this relationship will enable both parties
to do that more effectively.
The church and the theater are working
to renovate the existing stage and bring
upgrades to the lighting and sound
systems now in the main auditorium.
To that end, fundraising efforts are
underway, including an April 22 event at
the Jacksonville Randall Theatre location
featuring an On the Town with Ginger
Rogers fashion show. This very special
event will include a chance to purchase
11 of Gingers personal gowns, items
of her personal clothing, shoes, dozens
of pairs of gloves, milk bottles from her
Shady Cove Dairy Farm, silent auction
items, beverages, finger foods and more.
Shows scheduled to run in the
Jacksonville location include On
the Town (May 5 through 28), Neil

through July 9), Young Frankenstein,
the Musical (July 28 through August
20) and Dial M for Murder
(September 15 through October 1).

is that I know about all of these great
performers that are coming to Britt, but
I am sworn to secrecy due to the timing
of our April season announcement and
the Jacksonville Reviews publishing and
distribution deadlines.
This year is different because I have
some very exciting news to share. For
the past several years, EdenVale Winery,
Folin, Ledger David, Quady North, and
Weisinger Family Vineyards have been
providing lovely pours on our hill and
will continue to do so. Now, the time has

selections offered by local vineyards.

was music that Caleb composed and/
or performed himself. These elements
were transferred to the visuals to
create a complete film. Even some
green screen technology was used,
where Caleb filmed the figures on a
green poster board so that later, a live
video he had filmed earlier could be
superimposed onto the green.
The result was a film that must have
charmed the film committee at AIFF who
accepted it into the Launch competition.
Caleb, and his friend Will, will be present
at two showings during the festival in
early April. Otherwise, you can catch

art that (hopefully) will bring in enough
money to cover the cast, crew, and dozens feel-good story that audiences of all colors
of others whose names you read in the
end credits, while still garnering a sizable
bottom line for the studios. The studios,
after all, provide the resources ($$$) that
make it possible to produce the art.
Whether studio executives opt to
finance a movie depends on their
perception of how many tickets it likely
will sell. If previous ticket sales prove
that visual effects-
heavy movies starring

that might appeal to

pril is a special month for the Southern Oregon
Historical Society and Hanley Farm. SOHS is
proud to be the Grand Marshal for the 64th
Annual Pear Blossom Parade, April 8. To celebrate the Pear
Blossom Festival, Pear Blossom Posters for the past ten years,
created by artist Debby Elder, are on display in the History
Centers front windows, facing 6th and Central, in downtown
Medford. And, on April 29 & 30, Hanley Farm will host its
Annual Heritage Plant Sale.

Artist, Author and Cowboy Rancherwill be leading the
parade as Grand Marshal with his own team of horses.
A resident of Jordan Valley, Michael has written several
historical books, including his 1999, Journal of Michael F.
Hanley IV: Serving as Wagon Master on the 150th Anniversary
of the Applegate Trail.
Michael spins great family tales of his heritage, the farm
and family. Hanleys father ran the Butte Creek Ranch,
which he inherited from his father Michael II, and after
WWII sold it and moved to Jordan Valley. In 1857 Hanley's
great-grandfather, Michael Finely Hanley, bought a 640 acre
Donation Land Claim from the Clinton/Welton family, now
known as Hanley Farm. Today, Hanley Farm with its 1875
home, lush landscape and historic barns, sits in the center of
the beautiful Rogue Valley.
Heritage Plant SaleOn April 29 & 30, Hanley Farm
celebrates the popular Annual Heritage Plant Sale. Every year
the sale has grown in popularity as participants line up at the gate waiting to purchase
a bit of Hanley Farm history to plant and enjoy in their own gardens. This year, the

In the mid-1800s, the promise of gold and free land lured fortune seekers and settlers to the
newly-formed Oregon Territory. They were soon followed by merchants who amassed their
own wealth selling supplies to the miners and farmers. This ongoing series shares the stories of
these pioneers and their times.

Digging Jacksonville: The Blacksmith Shop Doll

W
hen the City of Jacksonville
and the Oregon Department
of Transportation uncovered
a pile of horseshoes while transplanting
a tree along C Street in 2010, they
unexpectedly uncovered the remains
of one of the town's earliest blacksmith
shops. Subsequent excavations by the
Southern Oregon
Laboratory of
Anthropology (SOULA)
revealed a variety of
tools and other items
that showed the site
was once an active
workshop serving the
needs of a bustling
frontier mining town.
One artifact flew under
the radar however; a
small fragment of a
bisque porcelain doll
face found among the
rust and broken glass.
like a minor out-of-
place find, it shows
that alongside the day
to day work of the blacksmith, children
would have been playing not too far
away, and the town would have been
alive with a variety of activity. Perhaps it
one day, destined to be buried for years
before we uncovered it.
I know that when I was a kid, my
toys often had lives of their own. Most
of them had names and recited heroic
phrases and insults at one another while
they fought in the battlefield I created
for them in the yard. I imagine that I was
not the first child to occupy themselves
in such a way, and looking at the blank
stare of the doll's face makes me wonder
if it had a name, and whether or not it
once said things to the kid it belonged to.
A toy like this seems like a more personal
object than the rusty tools and horseshoes
it was found alongside, and it is sad to
think what someone must have felt when
they lost or broke the doll.
So how did the doll end up here?
Maybe the doll belonged to one of the
blacksmiths children. A number of
smiths are listed on Jacksonvilles 1860
and 1870 census, and although we dont
know who worked at this particular
shop, speculation is free. Many of them

Marker Cleaning Workshops will
resume on Saturday, April 15 and then
on June 17, and on the third Saturday
of each month through Saturday,
September 16. Workshops are not held
in May as volunteers are busy preparing
the Cemetery grounds for the Memorial
Day holiday weekend activities. The
marker cleaning series of workshops is a
wonderful volunteer project that anyone
can be involved in. Our monthly seasonal
workshops began in 2013, and since that
time our volunteers have cleaned over 450
headstones and memorial markers. The
purpose of cleaning the cemetery markers
is not to make them look new again, but
rather to help preserve them by removing
dirt, lichen, moss, and other plant growth.
The cleaning process also allows visitors
to more easily read the inscriptions and
symbolism on the stones.
We meet at 9:00am at the Sextons Tool
Shed and Information Kiosk and usually
work until around noon or to whatever
time you can afford to donate. All the
proper cleaning tools and materials are
provided along with instructions on how
to clean the markers. Be sure and dress
for the project as you may get a little
wet! Bring a stool to sit on, and a hat
and sunscreen are also recommended.
Parking is available within the Cemetery
grounds. Thank you in advance for

their daughters. Perhaps it was ten-year-
old Mary Mickelsons, who was the first
of her family born in Oregon; the two
blacksmiths she lived with, presumably
her father and brother, were both from

the doll was a memento
belonging to one of
the smiths themselves.
Perhaps it once belonged
to a sister or a daughter
who was lost during the
difficult journey west,
and kept to remember
them by. It is just as
easy to imagine a
horseshoeing gone awry,
an animal knocking over
a shelf, sending the toy
into the dust and the
blacksmith cursing while
picking up the pieces
missing one of course
as it is to imagine a kid
accidently dropping
their favorite plaything when they snuck
it outside against their parents wishes.
After all, such dolls were not cheap.
While we will likely never know the
answer, it is sometimes useful to stop and
look at things differently. The artifacts
we study don't tell us every secret they
have, and I think that can be for the best.
The past is full of untold stories and even
adults need to remember how to use their
imagination every once in a while.

And if youre already moved out, keep
some furnishings strategically placed in
the main living areas of the home, as a
furnished home always looks bigger and
better than an empty space.

 Does Medicare Cover That?

ast month, we shared with you
answers to common questions
about how original Medicare
and Medicare Advantage plans work.
We are often asked questions about what
Medicare does or does not cover.
Most of the services Medicare does not
cover are decided by the government,
not by the supplemental insurance
or medical plan you may have with
Medicare. To learn a particular service or
procedure was not covered, after the fact,
can be frustrating and costly.
Medicare Part A does cover up to 100
days in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)
if a doctor shows that it is medically
necessary, but after day 100, you are on
your own. Home health care is covered,
but limited to part-time or intermittent
skilled nursing care with a Medicare
certified agency.
Medicare does not cover custodial care,
be it in a nursing home, assisted living
facility, skilled nursing facility or at
home. Custodial care is care that requires
help for the activities of daily living
such as eating, dressing, bathing and
transferring. These types of services can
be covered by a private long-term care
insurance plan.
Routine vision, routine dental and
hearing services are not covered
by Medicare. The key word here
is routine. Again, Medicare only
covers procedures that are medically
necessary. There are exceptions to the
rule as Medicare will cover cataract
surgery and a single pair of eyeglasses
after the surgery. If you have an injury
to sound, natural teeth, certain dental
surgeries are covered.

reen grass, blue skies and a
warm breeze often remind me
of my chores as a boy. When
I was a kid, one of my spring jobs was
crawling under the neighbors house to
get the boxes (lots of boxes) of gladiolus
bulbs Id put there the
previous fall. Why we
kept them under the
neighbors house is a
story for another day.
Id haul the boxes
back to our place
and dig holes and
plant said gladioli
pretty much where
I had dug them up
the previous fall.
Back then every boy
knew how to use
a shovel, but I got
more experience
than most because
of moms fondness for gardening. I
occasionally puzzled at digging-up and
then replanting the same bulbs over and
over but in our house compliance was not
optional. I was, however, always amazed
at the transformation of those lifeless-
looking stubs into the beautiful flowers
they became every summer. What I only
understood much later was the deep and
special appreciation of that beauty you
receive when youve done your part to
have helped things along.

puddle jumpers. In addition, American
Airlines is coming to the Medford airport
but the details are sketchy.
All of this growth and lack of building
during the recession has led to a record
low inventory of homes for sale and a
shortage of rental homes with a vacancy
rate hugging one percent. The single
family residential market is hot and real
estate prices are closing in on all-time
highs. Homes priced right are going
pending as soon as they are listed and we
are in for a near-record year in both the
number of homes sold and the price at
which they get sold for.
So have we hit the Tipping Point? Is
this the boiling point, the moment of
critical mass where we see our small
valley transform into a mecca for culture,
shopping, wine and outdoor activities?

tulips that the period became known as
the time of tulipomania. The flowers
were actually traded on the Netherlands
stock exchange, some fetching prices that
surpassed what average folks earned in
a year. Tulip speculation became illegal
in 1637, causing prices to plummet and
financial ruin among shareholders.
Tulips have not always been associated
with the color of money, however. In
their native lands, Persia (now Iran)
and Turkey, red tulips symbolized
passionate love, much like red roses
do today. The red color of the blooms
stood for a burning heart and the black
markings at the base of the petals on the
original species signified a heart on fire
smoldering into coal. Although the Turks
called the flowers lale, the common name
is derived from the Turkish word for
turban because of the flowers shape
when open.
In fact, the flowers form and colors
have changed over the years, much like
its names and monetary value. Native
tulips had slimmer blooms that curved
inward, like a tapered waist, and had
pointed tips on the petals. When the very
first plant catalogue was produced for
the Ottoman Empire in the beginning of
the 16th century, an astonishing variety
of tulipsmore than 1,500 had already
been cultivated and given titillating
names like Lovers Dream. When
conservative Dutchmen got a hold of
them though, hybrids were developed
with pastel colors and rounder, more
matronly, blooms. Less scandalous
names were promptly affixed to Dutch
cultivars, such as Silver Standard.
English gardeners also grew tulips in the
17th century, but they were primarily
used for formal gardens in public parks.
The French court of Louis XIV had
a lot more fun with tulips. Ladies
borrowed the Turks meaning for red
tulips by tucking a flower in their
dcolletage to signal would-be lovers,
and then they expanded the language
by wearing a yellow tulip to signify
hopeless love when the consequences
of a tryst were too steep to dare. In

The Weed Wrangler

W
ith the weather warming,
weeds arent far behind! In
fact, many are already here!
The weeds we should be most concerned
about are noxious weedsthose that, by
definition, cause economic loss, and harm
the environment. Noxious weeds choke-
out crops, destroy range and pasture
lands, clog waterways, affect human and
animal health, decrease property values,
and threaten native plant communities.
Most of Oregons least-desirable noxious
weeds are of European, Mediterranean,
and Asian origin.
The weeds on your property are, of
course, your business. As a temporary
property owner, (thats right, youre
only the temporary caretaker) its your
duty and obligation to take care of your
property to the best of your ability! This
should not come as a surprise! And,
what you dont do with your property
(weed control) is just as important as
what you do, and can adversely affect
your neighbors, so be considerate and
control your weeds!
The one weed were most familiar with
around the valley is Yellow Starthistle
(Centaurea solsticialis). A tap-rooted,
winter annual, it loves warm, south-
facing slopes, but given the chance, will
occupy almost any un-shaded piece of
ground. Seed output can be as high at
30,000 seeds per square meter, with about
95% of the seed being viable soon after
dispersal. Most seeds germinate within
a year of dispersal, but some can remain
viable in the soil for many years.
This is not a difficult weed to kill, but
one has to be persistent if one expects
to get rid of it. If youve got starthistle

Dont give up.
Annual weeds, like starthistle, will
succumb to a variety of treatments,
from shovels and hoes, mowing and
burning, to herbicides, goats, and
insects. Five species of insects, or
biological controls, have been released
for over 20 years in Oregon, so dont
invest too much time or energy in that
method. Besides, insects are pretty
much a last-ditch effort. Youve got
other tools, with more immediate
results, at your disposal. Pull, dig,
mow, chop, disk, burn, or spray, theyre
all viable tools to control this annual
weed. Just do it before yellow flowers
appear (because seeds will be produced
shortly thereafter). If you start treating
plants after flower production, cut the
flowers off, and bag them for disposal
later. By doing this, youve prevented
production of seed, and you can kill
the remaining plant at your leisure.
Remember, if you decide to spray,

 Drive Begins to Upgrade Cantrall Buckley for RV's

The Cantrall Buckley Park Committee
volunteers from the Greater Applegate
Community Development Corporation
(GACDC) are launching a fundraising
drive to complete the final phase
of our multi-year campground
improvement project. This large project
was encouraged by residents, local
businesses, wineries, non-profits, and
local festivals to support tourism in
the Applegate/Jacksonville region. In
the first two phases, private and public
donations of almost $600,000 enabled us
to design and install a state-of-the-art,
environmentally-friendly wastewater
treatment system and to construct a
modern restroom and shower facility for
the campground.
Phase 3 will bring the campground
up to modern standards to support all
classes of recreational vehicles (RVs). We
have blueprints to completely refurbish
each campsite with water and electrical
hookups. A full service dump station
has been designed. A new restroom is
planned for the group camp area. The
potable water system will be upgraded to
handle the increased capacity. And our
loop road will be repaved and widened
to accommodate the larger RVs. We
expect to start construction in 2019. The
project will cost in the neighborhood
of $360,000, all funded by grants and
donations from the communityus.
And were on our way! The Bureau of
Land Management (BLM) has donated
Ruch Student Honored for Essay
Cora Snoke, a 5th-grader at Ruch
Community School, was recognized by
the Medford school district as a runner-
up for her essay titled, Applegate Lake,
which will appear in the Oregon Blue
Book essay contest. The blue book is
the official state fact book about all levels
of government in Oregon, including
its arts and history organizations,
education system and more. The book
is compiled and published by the
Oregon State Archives, a division of the
Secretary of States office. Cora and her
fellow classmates participated in the
essay contest by writing works about
their favorite thing to do in Oregon. In
addition to having her essay published,
Cora and her parents, Ken Snoke

$5,000 to get us started. We will soon
have two group sites and our camp host

site fully RV-capable. In August of next
year we will partner with Jackson County
to apply for a state matching grant. That
means we have about a year-and-a-half to
raise $180,000.
We expect that Jacksonville businesses
will benefit greatly from this effort, as
will the Britt Music Festival and the
Oregon Shakespeare Festival, among
others. Based on current inquiries, we
forecast no difficulty in keeping our
already well-used campground filled.
To help meet this challenge, were
asking you to consider a contribution in
the range of $500-$3000. We appreciate
that this is a big commitment. Businesses
and service clubs might want to view
it as an economic investment in our
community. Investments of $1,000 or
more will be appropriately recognized in
a permanent display in the park.

they are a nuisance in our lives.
Dandelions.
An underappreciated and underutilized
plant in our society, the dandelion in the
Asteraceae (aster or sunflower) family, is
one of the most nutrient-packed foods on
earth and one of the world's most widely
used herbal medicines.
According to Amy Fontenot, a
traditional living skills teacher and
beekeeper, dandelions have a noteworthy
history. They were intentionally brought
over on the Mayflower as a source of
food and for their medicinal properties.
The scientific name for dandelion,
Taraxacum officinale, means the official
remedy for disorders.
Countless sources including the
book, Botany in a Day, emphasize how
dandelion leaves and roots, which are rich
in vitamins A, B, C, and E, and minerals
iron, phosphorus, potassium, copper and
calcium, offer dozens of health benefits.
Here are 10 ways dandelions, a free
and effortless nutrition and energy
source, can improve your life.
1. Dandelions for digestion. Eat a few
dandelion leaves before a meal to aid
in digestion. Dandelion root has mild
laxative qualities, and it promotes
healthy bacterial function in the
digestive tract. Dandelion roots
contain probiotics, which are good
for your gut bacteria and bolstering
your immune system.
2. Dandelion juice or tea is a detoxifier

Collecting Keys
T
he earliest known door keys were
large wooden shafts designed to
lift a pin tumbler lock that held
a crossbar across a door. The shaft, or
key, would push the beam in or out of
position from the door frame. This crude
Egyptian design was replaced by a Roman
invention using keys made of bronze
or iron to force metal pin-tumbler lock
that moved the beam aside. This concept
created obstructions, or wards, in the
lock through which the key must pass to
work, making it unique to the door.
The Romans and Chinese are both
given credit for developing the portable
padlock. They were
immediately popular since
they could be used to lock
many household items
including cupboards, jewelry
boxes, safes, trunks, as well
as doors. Having many keys
became a status symbol and
you were considered wealthy
if you carried many keys on
a ring, as you had much to secure.
An antique key has three basic parts.
The handle part you turn is called the
bow; the tab part that operated the lock
is called the bit, with both connected
by the shank. Keys of this type were
referred to as bit or barrel keys.
Bit keys had a solid shank and barrel
keys had a hallow shank, frequently
called skeleton keys today. This is a
misnomer as a skeleton key is designed
to open more than one door.

to making keys. Many keys were
commissioned to resemble the door to

used keys with religious symbols on the
bow. Superstitions suggested there was
healing power in the keys from these
great churches, and they were used in
healing rituals. Dragonheads were also
forged on the bow to keep evil from
creeping through the keyhole.
French craftsmen set a high standard to
create beautiful and intricately-designed
keys, locks, and doorplates with detailed
doorknobs. The English were more
interested in the technical aspects of the
locks. They rarely put ornamentation on
them, and were more interested in making
locks that were difficult to pick. In the
late 1700s, they developed a
double-acting tumbler lock and
in 1784 Joseph Bramah patented
a safety lock that opened with a
cylindrical key that need to be
exactly right to turn the bolt.
One hundred years later,
the American, Linus Yale, and
his son, invented the cylinder
lock that we know as the pin-
tumbler, still in use today. The key has a
blade instead of a shank, with horizontal
grooves that allow the key to pass the
wards in the cylinder. The cuts or bittings
operate the pins inside the lock allowing
the cylinder to turn freely.

News from Jacksonville Elementary School
I
n March, Jacksonville Elementary
School students and parents hosted
their 13th annual Art Exhibition.
This years theme was Art Olympics
and showcased the creations of over 480
students in many media. This exhibition
is the culmination of their study of
master artists throughout the school
year through the parent-led art program.
Our student artists enjoyed sharing
their creativity with all who came out
to support them. Our thanks to Exhibit
Coordinator Stacy Branan and Art
Program Coordinator Rebecca Williams;
both of whom graciously stepped into
these roles this year. We so appreciate
their dedication, as well as the many
parent volunteers, that make our PTO-
supported art education possible!
Jacksonville Pioneers are off to the
Oregon Battle of the Books regional
competition! Elsa Durland, Brooke
Johnston, Christopher Kranenburg,
and Jaren Prins, known as The Flying
Book Warriors, advanced to regionals in
the 3rd-5th grade division. Jacksonville
sixth-graders, Jillian Deller, Ella Fryer,
Merrick Pannell, and Katelyn Robertson
represent Jacksonville in the 6th-8th
grade division and will be competing as
the Reading Rangers. Go Pioneers!
The Oregon Battle of the Books is a
statewide voluntary reading program
sponsored by the Oregon Association of
School Libraries. Each team has read and
mastered sixteen books, representing a
variety of literary styles and viewpoints.
During the battle, teams are quizzed on
details of the books characters, setting,
and plot, as well as questions asking
students to identify the book and author.
Oregon Battle of the Books aims to
encourage and recognize who enjoy
reading, to broaden reading interests,
to increase reading comprehension,
promote academic excellence and to
promote cooperative learning and
Kiwanis Honors Student of the Month
for March
Aiyana Cail, a senior at South Medford
High School, was honored as Student of
the Month for March by the Jacksonville
Kiwanis Club. Her proud mother is
Bonny Cail of Medford. Her current
grade point average is 3.8.
Aiyana has majored in math and
science courses which have included
Honors in Algebra, Geometry and
Pre-Calculus, and Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, Anatomy and Physiology. She
has also taken Wilderness Medicine and
various art courses.
She plays in the Wind Ensemble and
the Concert band, and participates in
the dance team, rowing crew, and was
active in the Girl Scouts. She has also
helped with soup kitchens with her
church and has done Meals-on-Wheels
for the homebound.
Her goals include attending Boise State
University and completing a degree in
Forensic Chemistry. She will strive to
become one of the best forensic scientists
in this field to help make the world a
better and safer place. She also would
like to travel around the world and
experience different cultures and continue
volunteering as much as possible.
Her mother has and always will be the
biggest influence in her life. Her mother

The 7th Annual Jacksonville
Elementary Schools Writers Festival
will be held on Tuesday, May 9th from

National best-selling author Megan
McDonald will be the keynote speaker
this year. Ms. McDonald is the author
of many beloved books, including
the Judy Moody series and the tales of
Judys younger brother, related in
the Stink series. The Writers Festival
is a school-wide event, featuring the
writing of every student at Jacksonville
Elementary. During the festival,
students will hear from Ms. McDonald
about her creative process, then meet
in small groups with local authors,
journalists, educators and other writing
enthusiasts who facilitate discussion of
each students writing. Please join us in
celebrating our young authors!
Save-the-date for the schools 29th
annual musical preformed on the Britt
Stage! Led by Jacksonvilles music
teacher Wendi Stanek, students from
the fourth, fifth and sixth grades will be
performing The Wizard of Oz on May
25. This annual performance kicks off
the summer of music on the hill. The fun

Making the Best of Things
W
eve been having an
interesting adventure these
past few weeks. Having sold
our ginormous SUV, we are hunting for
a second car. Brand new is not an option,
so were hunting for a used something.
The problem is, all the cars we really like
are new, or close to it. In the course of our
search Ive noticed the phrase second
best, being tossed out quite a lot, as in,
We cant have what
we want so well have
to settle for second
best. The phrase
began to bother me.
I dont know
about you, but in my
experience, second
best was a phrase of
defeat. Come home
with first or dont
come home, my
brother once quipped
as I left for a debate tournament. I took
those words to heart and have been
suffering under them ever since. While
there is nothing inherently wrong about
doing ones best or wanting nice things,
there is indeed something wrong with
feeling that you must be or have the best
or you will perceive yourself a failure.
Historically for me there was no second
best. There was first best, or nothing. Its
a tough way to live.
My own, beautiful son taught me an
amazing lesson in perspective on this
topic. Walking to our car after suffering
a particularly bad trouncing in a long
series of losses for his baseball team, I
cautiously asked him how he felt about
the game. His response stunned me. He
said, I feel good about it. I pitched really
well, and he looked at me and smiled.
His team was terrible, yet he had done
his best and felt great. I have never been
more impressed or proud of him than I
was in that moment.
My son taught me what best is
all about: perspective. The notion
of second best can only exist in a
dualistic mindset that insists on constant
comparisons to others, to the past, or
to an idealized fantasy of perfection.
Thinking about this notion of second
best in choosing a car a strange and
rather exciting idea arose: What if
theres no such thing as second best?

h April. The fickle month of
rain and sunshine, where the
only splashes of color in the
gray, drizzling rain are your pink cheeks,
colorful umbrella, and the flowers
whove decided to make their yearly
appearance. This is the fabled time of
year for children to sneak out in-between
rainy periods to splash in the puddles
and enjoy the touch of rain on their
cheeks as they peek up at the gentle sun.
This April, we will find multitudes of
children in their Easter best hunting for
eggs in the green grass, with the promise
of a coloring book or another such
treasure to be won. Little girls walk primly
in frilly dresses, clutching their parents
hand, and little boys go running about at
the sight of a familiar face. But all go still
as the Easter bunny makes his appearance,
and then the crowd surges forward,
parents being dragged by an ecstatic little
girl or boy to touch the bunnys towering
ears, or receive a bit of chocolate.
Personally, one of my favorite qualities
of the months between winter and spring,
are the daffodils. The daffodil is a positive
burst of color when Jacksonville is still
trapped in the confines of winter or rain.
It smiles through the times, bringing
nostalgic memories of flowering springs
At any given moment, in any given
situation, we are always doing our best
with what we have, what we know and
who we are. Discontent rears its ugly head
only when I compare myself to another, or
to a desire that I have decided is the sine qua
non of my existence. Whatever car we have
will be the best, given our reality. Its only
second best if I continue to hold a belief
that it could be otherwise, when obviously
it cant be otherwise or
else it would be. This is
a logical truth.
Theres more to
it, however. Beyond
the logical there is a
spiritual dimension
at play.
Limitationsbe
they of resources,
health or other
circumstances beyond
our controlcan be
seen not just as obstacles that must be
accepted but as meaningful and necessary
parameters that guide our unfoldment.
The poet David Whyte once said:
anything real that presents itself to us is
not a barrier, but a necessary next step.
In other words, I can see my inability to
have the car of my dreams as a mark of
failure and be frustrated, or I could see it
as meaningful. What if not having what
I think I want is precisely what my soul
needs for its growth and development?
What if I fully, confidently believed that
my lifes circumstances were channeling
me toward becoming my very best self?
We are all on our perfect trajectory,
having the experiences and challenges
and opportunities to grow into the
fullness of our divine, essential natures.
Its difficult to see this trajectory, caught
up as we are in our human existence
and tripped-up at every turn by our
frightened and frantic egos. But every
now and then, a little awareness breaks
through reminding us that its not what
we have but how we view our lives that
matters, and in those moments we see
that it is, indeed, all good.

new one in the coming month. And, as we
see the daffodils of Jacksonville begin to
fade away and droop, the promise is soon
fulfilled with pear blossoms and tulips,
scenting the air. And of course, Easter
takes up residence in mind as the holiday
draws closer. Painting eggs, dividing up
chocolate bunnies, trying to decide which
way it would be the least painful for your
chocolate bunny to go, and the death and
resurrection of my savior, Jesus Christ, are
all significant for me as Easter rolls around.
Now is the time for the ending of this
article, to get back to the grind of school
and never-ceasing homework. Have a
happy Easter and enjoy the daffodils!

Mayor Beckers Community Spirit
Is Infectious
J
acksonville Mayor Paul Beckers
transition from New York City
to our small village is a story of
finding ones place in the world and is
replete with the usual ups and downs,
triumphs, defeats, sadness and elation.
Paul was born in 1929 on the upper West
Side of New York City. His mother was
of Irish/Swiss descent
while his father
was an immigrant
from Turkey. Mayor
Becker laughs when
considering his
parents union, That
these two should
have even met, let
alone get married
puzzles me to this
day, and the result
of their marriage
was that they were
ostracized by both of
their families.
The West Side
neighborhood that
Paul grew up in the 1930s was populated
by a middle-income mix of Jewish small
entrepreneurs on one side and a large
Irish population on the other. Paul
remembers there was some gang activity
during his youth but then early on he
learned how to steer clear of trouble and
walk away from it. Pauls father was a
barber and was able to provide for his
family even in the difficult depression
years. It was during these early years
on the West Side that what became a
life-long passion came about. The main
form of entertainment during this time
was going to the movies. In those days,
movie theaters promoted upcoming
films by placing posters in businesses,
especially barber shops. His fathers
barbershop always displayed one so, in
return, his dad received weekly movie
passes, allowing Paul to attend at least
two movies a week, resulting in him
becoming a movie buff.
Unlike many who remember our
school days with fondness, Paul says he
was never comfortable in school. Part
of this I believe was because I was an
only child and, since my parents were
alienated from their families, I did not
have a lot of interaction with other kids.
He remembers attending PS #9, the local
elementary school and from there the
Bronx Side School of Science, considered
to be the most prestigious high school
in New York City at the time. While a
good student, high school didnt interest
him much and, even though his mother
dreamed of him being an engineer, he
had no interest in that profession. He
finished high school in three and a half
years, graduating at age 16, and from
there went on to Syracuse University
where he was surrounded by much
older students, many utilizing the G.I.
Bill. His uncomfortable school days
continued. I was a fish out of water.
Because I was so young I had no social
life and basically floundered. After a
year at Syracuse, he transitioned to New
York University and received straight
As but still found no excitement in
school, so he enlisted in the army.
After his army stint, he started taking
any number of many post-WWII jobs. He
was a soda jerk, delivery truck worker
and picked up office work jobs, as well.
Then he landed a job with Chase Bank
in the tabulation department, which
launched his career. In December
1954, he took his tabulation experience
to Southern California for a job with
Southern California Gas Company.
From here he moved on to Tidewater
Oil Company at a time in the late 1950s
when computers were just arriving on the
scene. At Tidewater, he took an aptitude
test which he said proved he was truly
blessed because I finished #2 in computer
proficiency and went on to become a
computer programmer, even before
the occupation was identified. Paul
worked with several different companies
during the remaining years of his
computer technology
career, finishing
with Southwest
Administrative
Corporation, a
privately-owned
medical billing
company. He
spent 20 years with
Southwest, retiring
as a partner.
Pauls long-time
love of the movies
had not wavered
during the years
and, while at
Southwest, he came
up with the idea
of starting a radio show on the local
KCSN radio station that would focus
on nostalgic movies. The radio show
never happened, but he started spending
his daily lunchtime in the Hollywood
archives, researching old musicals.
Remembering this time, he says, I dont
know how I got into this tremendous
library of files and how I pretty much
had Carte Blanc to them, but I did and
it was wonderful. I became especially
intrigued with any files pertaining to the
Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire musicals.
One day the archives manager, knowing
of my interests, asked if I would like
to go with him to see Ginger Rogers as
he had some business to do with her.
This casual introduction and meeting
with Ginger Rogers turned into a very
close and long-term friendship that
Mayor Becker relishes to this day. Paul
remembers that he was single at this time
and a pattern developed where he and
Ginger had dinner together at least once
a week. When Ginger was being honored
with a lifetime achievement award, she
asked Paul to put together a montage of
film clips from her career, which he did,
and it was so well received that George
Montgomery asked him to do one for him.
From then on, he was in high demand.
When Ginger Rogers moved to her
ranch on the Rogue River in 1978, Paul
started visiting her on a regular basis.
He said he once mentioned to her that he
had spent more time with her than any of
her five husbands. He eventually became
the executor of her estate and was with
her until the end.
Paul moved to the Rogue Valley in
1993 because, in his many visits to
Ginger Rogers, he didnt see anything
to not like about the Rogue Valley.
He first lived in Shady Cove, and it
was during this time he met his third
wife, Sharon, which he says is one of
the greatest blessings of my life. They
married in 2004 and on Sharons urging,
moved to Jacksonville and began the
third phase of Pauls busy life.
His first involvement with the political
life of Jacksonville was running for City
Council, mainly because I thought the
fire department surcharge was the worst
idea Id ever heard of. Now that he has
a number of years of city government
behind him and the surcharge is in place,
he can live with it and sees its value. He
became mayor when the then-mayor
resigned mid-term and Paul, being the
President of the City Council, filled in for
the remaining two years of the mayors
term. He then ran for mayor in 2012 and
was elected as was the case in 2016.

llergy sufferers know the signs all too well
spring is literally in the air, and coming in
direct contact with their eyes. In the U.S., 20
percent of adults and children suffer from allergies.
For people who suffer allergy-related eye problems,
a number of over-the-counter and new prescription
medications are available to provide relief.
Common problems related to allergies include
itchy, red, burning, watery, or swollen eyes. Triggers
include pollens from grass, trees, and environmental
contaminants, as well as dust,
animal hair and yeast. The problem
starts when the bodys immune
system mistakes these substances
for unwanted foreign bodies. When
the immune system overreacts,
it triggers allergic reactions to
protect the eyes from potential
injury. If individuals can pinpoint
the cause of the allergy and avoid
exposure whenever possible, that
will help relieve the eyes the most.
Unfortunately this is not always feasible.
When their eyes become irritated, people can seek

may cause allergy sufferers to find their eyes drier
than normal. Dry eye
symptoms may be treated
with artificial tear drops,
gels or ointments.

lenses, airborne allergens
can stick on your
lenses making them
uncomfortable to wear.
Allergens can also cause
your eyes to over-produce
natural substances which
bind to your contact lenses. You can use lubricant eye
drops to relieve your symptoms and keep your contact

suggest cold compresses, over-the-counter eye
you should wait 15 minutes after putting in the drops
before you put your contact lenses in your eyes.

Most importantly, people should always discuss any
medications and over-the-counter products they are
taking with their optometrist. With this information,
a better diagnosis can be determined for the cause of

tailored accordingly.

become a favorite of many. Paul loves

of the movies and their stars, giving

Classic Theater. Just a week after
the interview for this article, it was
announced that the Randall Theatre
had entered into an agreement with the
Jacksonville Calvary Church to bring
live theatre back to Jacksonville. It
should come as no surprise that it was

Paws for Thought by Dr. Tami Rogers
O
ne of the drawbacks to my profession is
performing euthanasia. The act in itself is a
double-edged sword. On one side, we get the
ability to provide a peaceful exit and an end to suffering,
but on the other, we as owners have
to make the painful decision on
when to have it done. Each time I
euthanize an animal, I feel that I am
stealing something precious, taking
something irreplaceable from a
client. Regardless of my emotions,
euthanasia is never about me. It is
about the loss felt by the owner as
they forever say goodbye to their
loyal companion.
This last weekend, I performed
the most painful euthanasia of my
veterinary career to date. Thats not
to say that it is ever easy by any
means, but this time it was different.
This time, as I knelt in my own
living room and I administered the
injection to the sweet little dog in my
daddys arms, I felt deep pain. As I
watched the sobs shake my fathers
shoulders, even as he fought to hide
his emotions, it forever changed me.
Fourteen years ago, my daddy fell in love with my
sweet pug Isabelle. He was amazed at her personality,
her tenacity, and her general overall adorableness. A
few years later, he got his own Izzy. A sweet little fawn
Pug that he named Winnie. She was the cutest little
bundle and she quickly wormed her way deep into
my fathers heart. His devotion to that little Pug was
immense and the level of adoration he felt for her was
equally reciprocated. As Winnie aged, time was hard
on her. Neurologic problems took their toll and she lost

the ability to walk with her hind limbs. With that, she
also lost the feeling in her bladder and colon, having
to be manually expressed in order to void. She was in
a wheel chair to walk and otherwise relied on my dad
for everything. Over the last year she battled
recurring bladder infections due to a cyst
inside her urinary tract that I was unable to
remove surgically. She declined rapidly over
the last month and a half and my daddy made
the painful decision to let her go.
He lives down in the Reno area but wanted
to bring her to me. He made the long drive
early last Saturday morning with her right by
his side. When he arrived, I could see the pain
in his eyes and his desperation. He needed
more time. He needed a miracle. But, I knew
when I looked at her, that it was time. I could
have bought her a few days, weeks, or maybe
a month or two with aggressive therapy, but
it would have been at a great expense to her.
Ultimately, my daddy said goodbye to her that
night. Sitting in the comfort of my home, he
held her in his arms as she ate her last meal,
and took her last breaths.
I wept that night at his feet, and later after he
left, I wept in the arms of my little girl. I cried
for the pain I still feel over the loss of my sweet dog and
for the pain that I saw in my fathers eyes. I cried for the
loss of my fathers best friend and the emptiness that I
know was filling him. I cried because I could not fix her
and because I know that my father feels like he betrayed
her dedication in those final moments even though he
gave her everything.

S
pring is starting to show in
Southern Oregon and the animals
at Sanctuary One are especially
happy after weeks of snow kept them
inside the barn. Sanctuary One, in
the Applegate Valley, is a care farm
dedicated to rescuing domestic and farm
animals, facilitating health and wellness
for people, and promoting environmental
stewardship. They believe that a farm
can do more than grow food for people's
bellies; it can heal bodies and lift spirits,
too, if people work together with animals
and the earth for mutual healing.
At Sanctuary One, people of all ages
have the opportunity to volunteer on
a real working farm and experience
natures healing power firsthand. They
offer educational tours that open peoples
hearts and minds. They invite groups
from schools and youth-serving nonprofit
organizations to visit the farm for fresh
air, exercise and hands-on service-
learning. This year, they are especially
excited to launch a new program with
their garden produce serving regional
food banks. Sanctuary One promotes
the ethics of mindful, sustainable living;
and they provide a safe, loving home to
rescued farm animals and pets.
With 55 acres and over sixty animals, it
takes a lot of work to keep their care farm
running! They need you! Join Sanctuary
One as they launch their first Volunteer
Week April 23-29. While there are always
volunteer opportunities throughout the

space. During discussion, Councilor
David Jesser voiced a minority opinion,
favoring backing away and letting
the floor lay idle for the time being
while the city tackles other budgetary
matters including public safety funding
obstacles on the horizon. Jesser noted
that the soon-to-be-built Community
Center will likely fill the need for public
meeting space. At the conclusion of the
discussion, council gave Administrator
Alvis permission to move forward with
spending $8-$10,000 from the available
$610,000 building fund to update
architectural plans for construction of
an interior elevator system. An interior
elevator will require an outside ADA-
accessible ramp leading to the first
floor of NCH. Once updated, the plans
will become a part of a new RFP for
elevator construction.

Budget Committee, March 9, 2017
Solid Financial FootingAt its March
meeting, the Budget Committee gathered
to hear the results of an audit of the citys
finances conducted by the CPA firm, KDP.
Auditor and CPA Mark Damon gave
the city exceptionally high marks for its
work to keep the city on solid ground.
For the year ending June 30, 2016, not
only does the city have $200,000 more in
certain fund accounts than previously
known, but Damon reported city assets
have also increased to more than $14.3M,
a net increase of $300,000. With liabilities
down, assets up and departments
operating frugally, the year-over-year
comparisons make the recent audit
something to be proud of. Ordinarily, the
audit would have been sooner, but was
delayed because the city had switched its
accounting platform to the Springbrook
system in the 2016 fiscal year. Under the
leadership of Administrator Jeff Alvis
and Treasurer Stacy Bray, in conjunction
with an excellent Budget Committee
of committed citizens, the audit places
Jacksonville in excellent shapefor now.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the
committee discussed upcoming needs
for increased revenue for police and
fire operations. As such, the committee
will discuss the option of placing a
property tax levy measure on the May
or November 2018 ballot to raise needed
public safety funds. This and other topics
of financial interest will be on the agenda
when the Budget Committee meets on
April 20 or 27 at 4:00pm at Old City Hall.
