Time: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Date: 9/26/16
Place: Palmquist Dental
Total Hours Spent Shadowing: 4

Observations
Need to be friendly
Repetition
Very sanitary
You get to know everyone on a personal level
Steady hands

Reflection
For the first day, it went well. I noticed there is a lot of repetition; you do the same
thing with each patient. My mentor knows every patient on a personal level: who
they are and what they have been up to. You need to be friendly because you are
around patients all day.

Date: 10/5/16
Place: Palmquist Dental
Total Hours Spent Shadowing: 8

Observations
Every persons teeth are different
Up to date equipment
Specific tools for certain jobs

Reflection
Im starting to like the feel of the work environment in the dental office. I saw how
well she handles different personalities and how well she gets to know all of her
patients. There is a lot of tools you need to use that have specific jobs. Today, I
learned that there is a different tool for each side of the tooth. Another thing that I
got from today is that you need to pay attention to what you are doing, so you dont
accidentally poke them.

Observations
Need to teach the patient how to keep up with good oral hygiene
Need to improvise to meet the patients needs

Reflection
When you are cleaning the patients teeth, you must inform them on what you are
doing and explain to them what they should work on to improve their oral health.
You also need to learn how to improvise if something isnt working or if you have
a patient with a specific need. For example, a patient came in that was in a
wheelchair.

Observations
How to check gum health
Learned about a probe
Dentures and bridges require different techniques to clean
Wipe off chair and chords and get new tools after each patient

Reflection
I got to learn what a probe is today; its a tool used to check the gums and see if
they are inflamed or not. I got to witness my mentor working with dentures and
bridges. There is specific floss that allows you to clean underneath bridges. After
every patient, you must clean off the chair and equipment, change gloves, and get
new tools. This prevents the spread of germs and keeps everything sanitary.
