Evidence of Learning Assessment #1

Name of person interviewed: Dr. Arturo Arauzo

Profession: Psychiatrist

Location and business name: 5172 Village Creek Dr Ste 101 Plano, TX 75093

Date of interview: December 16, 2016

Time: 12:15 pm

Although my first mentor visit felt exactly like I was walking into an interview, I had no
nerves as I stepped through the office door that led to the receptionist area. I had a plan of what
I wanted to talk about, ideas for my final project, an open mind for adjustment, and an
enthusiasm for my mentorship with Dr. Arauzo.
I knew that, because of HIPAA and patient privacy laws, working with an actual patient
would be potentially difficult since I would have to find someone willing to let me sit in on their
session. However, Dr. Arauzo graciously offered to contact his new incoming patients so that I
could experience patients with untreated ADD, Panic Disorder, and other mental illnesses, as
well as view their transformations in the form of case studies.
Dr. Arauzo tasked me with researching and printing my own HIPAA forms so that I could
legally sit in the session with the patients permission, and be aware of how the process of
paperwork worked. He also invited me to become his diaphragmatic breathing coach as some
of his patients were not quite grasping his techniques. Thus, I will be researching the best
techniques for diaphragmatic breathing and composing a short video in order to effectively train
patients on how to properly deep breathe. Once the patient can grasp the style of breathing,
they will be able to calm and soothe themselves in a sort of meditative way. As his breathing
coach, he will be offering me to sit in with a patient for 15 minutes no charge and teach them my
method of breathing. In part, he gave me this task because he has found that men more easily
grasp the concept rather than women and he wanted to find a way to connect with the patients
he was not reaching.
On top of being a breathing coach and sitting in on initial assessments, Dr. Arauzo will
also describe the patients he is currently seeing, without their names, and tell me of the
symptoms shown, how he diagnosed them, how he will be treating them, and other interesting
information that will help me gather case studies that show a life in the day of a psychiatrist.
The mentor visit with Dr. Arauzo has helped me to learn more about ways to work with
the patient privacy laws, the various techniques and ways to help patients therapeutically, and
how I can prepare myself to help out in the psychiatric office. From here on out, I will always
carry with me the various forms given to patients on their initial visit, depression rating scales,
and HIPAA forms to better prepare myself for dealing with patients who have allowed me to view
their sessions.
