Water Washing of Turbo-Chargers

Dear Sirs,

In 1964 we introduced water washing by means of an air

operated spray gun for the turbine side of the turbo-charger, and in
1965 this was extended to include the compressor side too.

Our experiences with the water washing of the turbine side

hove been satisfactory, os the water washing has been able to reduce
deposits on the turbine blades so that the gasflow condition and effi-
ciency of the turbine side can be maintained.

Further, the possibility of unbalance will be decreased and

consequently the risk of bearing damage.

Our experiences with water washing of the compressor side

hove also in several cases been satisfactory but in some cases greasy
sludge from the compressors has stuck between the fins in the air
coolers, necessitating extra cleaning of these.

On the basis of above experiences we will therefore in the

future recommend water washing of the turbine side carried out in
accordance with our instructions mentioned in the instruction book,
whereas we wi II recommend not to carry out water washing of the
compressor side.

Yours faithfully,
