COUSE DESCRIPTION:
I would like to welcome you to 7th Grade English Language Arts! I look forward to a successful and productive year.
During this class, we will be reading a variety of works, writing in a variety of genres, engaging in weekly discussions,
and learn more grammar, vocabulary, and skills to become confident readers, writers, and speakers! Please take a
moment to read over the guidelines in this syllabus and return the signed portion at the end.

COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

1. READING: You will be able to independently and proficiently read, analyze, cite, compare, and contrast
increasingly difficult texts from a variety of genres.
2. WRITING: You will be able to plan, draft, revise, and edit writing, including developing arguments,
information, and narratives.
3. SPEAKING & LISTENING: You will be able to collaboratively discuss with your peers, develop presentational
skills, and evaluate arguments.
4. LANGUAGE: You will learn proper conventional skills for this grade level and a variety of new vocabulary
words.
5. TECHNOLOGY: You will use technology creatively, collaboratively, and in a way that displays digital
citizenship, critical thinking, and research/information fluency. You will learn how to cite.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
1. Respect yourself, your peers, your teacher, your school, and property.
2. Be on time and prepared for class.
3. Follow daily expectations of the teacher and of the school.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND DUE DATES:
Journal, 50 pts/quarter: Must include day, date, daily Informational Essay, 40 pts: Due quarter 2.
objectives, journal question, anything else the
student would like the teacher to read. Part of Argumentative Essay, 50 pts: Due quarter 3.
participation grade. Due at the end of each quarter.
Group Project, 50 pts: Due quarter 4.
Narrative Essay, 30 pts: Due quarter 1.
Group Presentation, 50 pts: Due quarter 4.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES:

Design a classroom poster/anchor chart for decoration. Must be turned in two weeks before the last week of each
semester. Can only be completed one time per school year for 10 pts. Talk with me about this before you make it.

PROCEDURES AND CONSEQUENCES:

Late work IS accepted for 50% of the grade for only
seven days after the due date, including weekends.
If you are absent, check with me for your make-up
work, or e-mail me during your absence. Make-up
work IS accepted for a week after the absence(s).
You will get a warning for your first late, which
includes not being in your seat when the bell rings.
Two lates result in staying after class five minutes to
write an exit ticket. Three lates result in lunch with
me and a written assignment. Four lates result in a
call home.
Extensions on major course assignments are allowed,
if you ask for them in advance. Talk with me about
what is going on so that we can make
accommodations.
Technology is only allowed to be out in the open
when used for classroom purposes.
Follow the schools hall pass policy, or you will not be
allowed out of the room until the bell rings.
I do check for plagiarism on assignments. Plagiarism
results in an automatic zero, a call home, and a
conversation with me.

When in doubt if you can or cannot do something, ask yourself, will it be distracting/disturbing to the current flow of
the classroom? If the answer is yes, dont do it.
