Optimization
Tutorial2

1. Solve the following LP problems graphically:

(a) Maximize z = 6x1 + 5x2 ,

subject to 3x1 + x2 160, x1 40, x2 130, x1 80, x1 0, x2 0.
(b) Maximize z = 7x1 + 10x2 ,
subject to x1 36, x2 12, x1 + 4x2 60, 2x1 + x2 30, x1 x2 0, x1 0, x2 0.

2. Determine graphically the following LPP has a unique optimal solution or alternative optima
Maximize z = x1 + 2x2 ,
subject to x1 + 2x2 10, x1 + x2 1, x2 4, x1 0, x2 0.

3. Jack is an aspiring freshman at Ulern University. Jack wants to apportion his available time of 10 hours a
day between work and play. He estimates that play is twice as much fun as work. He also wants to study at
least as much as he plays. However, Jack realizes that if he is going to get all his homework done, he cannot
play more than 4 hours a day. How should Jack allocate his time to maximize his pleasure from both work
and play? Solve graphically.

4. A firm makes two products X & Y, and has a total production capacity of 9 tonnes per day, X & Y requiring
the same production capacity. The firm has a permanent contract to supply at least 2 tonnes of X and at least
3 tones of Y per day to another company. Each tonnes of X requires 20 machine hours of production time
and each tonnes of Y requires 50 machine hours of production time. The daily maximum possible number
of machine hours is 360. All the firms output can be sold, and the profit made is Rs. 80 per tonne of X
and Rs. 120 per tonne of Y. It is required to determine the production schedule for maximum profit and to
calculate this profit.

5. A diet for a sick person must contain at least 4000 units of vitamins, 50 units of minerals and 1400 calories.
Two food A and B are available at a cost of Rs. 4 and Rs. 3 per unit respectively. If one unit of food A
contains 200 units of vitamins, 1 unit of mineral and 40 calories and one unit of food B contains 100 units
of vitamin, 2 units of minerals and 40 calories, find by graphic method what combination of foods be used
to have least cost.

6. A firm plans to purchase at least 200 quintals of scrap containing high quality metal X and low quality
metal Y. it decides that the scrap to be purchased must contain at least 100 quintals of X metal and not more
than 35 quintals of Y metal. The firm can purchase the scrap from two suppliers (A and B) in unlimited
quantities. The percentage of X and Y metals in terms of weight in the scrap supplied by A and B is given
by

Metals Supplier A Supplier B

X 25% 75%
Y 10% 20%

The price of As scrap is Rs. 200 per quintal and that of B is Rs. 400 per quintal. The firm wants to determine
the quantities that it should buy from the two suppliers so that the cost is minimized.
7. Determine graphically which of the following LPP has unbounded solution, infeasible solution and alterna-
tive optima. [9]

(a) Max z = 20x1 + 30x2 , 4x1 + 6x2 20, x1 + x2 1, x2 3, x1 0 and x2 0.

(b) Max z = 20x1 + 30x2 , 2x1 + 4x2 16, x1 + 5x2 15, x2 6, x1 0 and x2 0.
(c) Max z = 20x1 + 30x2 , 2x1 + x2 40, 4x1 x2 20, x1 30, x1 0 and x2 0.

8. OilCo is building a refinery to produce four products: diesel, gasoline, lubricants, and jet fuel. The mini-
mum demand (in bbl/day) for each of these products is 14,000,30,000, 10,000, and 8,000, respectively. Iran
and Dubai are under contract to ship crude to OilCo. Because of the production quotas specified by OPEC
(Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) the new refinery can receive at least 40% of its crude
from Iran and the remaining amount from Dubai. OilCo predicts that the demand and crude oil quotas will
remain steady over the next ten years.

The specifications of the two crude oils lead to different product mixes: One barrel of Iran crude yields 0.2
bbl of diesel, 0.25 bbl of gasoline, 0.l bbl of lubricant, and 0.15 bbl of jet fuel. The corresponding yields
from Dubai crude are 0.1, 0.6, 0.15, and 0.1, respectively. Oileo needs to determine the minimum capacity
of the refinery (in bbl/day).

9. Day Trader wants to invest a sum of money that would generate an annual yield of at least $10,000. Two
stock groups are available: blue chips and high tech, with average annual yields of 10% and 25%, respec-
tively. Though high-tech stocks provide higher yield, they are more risky, and Trader wants to limit the
amount invested in these stocks to no more than 60% of the total investment. What is the minimum amount
Trader should invest in each stock group to accomplish the investment goal?

10. Transform the following linear programming problems to the standard form:

(a) Minimize z = 3x1 + 4x2 2x3 + 5x4 ,

subject to 4x1 x2 + 2x3 x4 = 2, x1 + x2 + 3x3 x4 14, 2x1 + 3x2 x3 + 2x4 2,
where x1 0, x2 0, x3 0 and x4 is unrestricted in sign.
(b) Minimize z = 2x1 x2 + 2x3 ,
subject to x1 + x2 + x3 = 4, x1 + x2 x3 6, x1 0, x2 0 and x3 is unrestricted in sign.
(c) Minimize z = 10x1 + 2x2 x3 ,
subject to x1 + x2 30, x1 x3 1, x2 + x3 3, x2 + x3 7, x1 + x2 + x3 = 10, x1 , x2 , x3 0.
