Conditionals

A Zero Conditional [If + present simple] , [present simple]

We use the zero conditional when we talk about facts or things that are generally true.
e.g. If you press that button, the machine starts.
e.g. If you turn on the AC, the room gets cooler.
e.g. If you get an overall grade of 90%, do you skip a level?

The if-clause and main clause can also be reversed.
e.g. The machine starts if you press that button.
e.g. The room gets cooler if you turn on the AC.
e.g. Do you skip a level if you get an overall grade of 90%?

B First Conditional [If + present simple] , [will + infinitive] REAL

We use the first conditional to say that something will happen if something else happens.
e.g. If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
e.g. If the weather is nice, we will go to the beach.
e.g. If you finish work early, will you come out tonight?

The if-clause and main clause can also be reversed.
e.g. You will pass the exam if you study hard.
e.g. We will go to the beach if the weather is nice.
e.g. Will you come out tonight if you finish work early?

* You can also use can, may, & might instead of will (e.g. If you get 90% on the exam, you can skip to the next level).

C Second Conditional [If + past simple] , [would + infinitive] UNREAL

We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary or very unlikely situations.
e.g. If I had $10,000,000, I would buy a big villa.
e.g. If I was you, I wouldnt buy that car. (or If I were you, I wouldnt buy that car)
e.g. If you were in my position, would you tell her the truth?

The if-clause and main clause can also be reversed.
e.g. I would buy a big villa if I had $10,000,000.
e.g. I wouldnt buy that car if I was you. (or I wouldnt buy that car if I were you.)
e.g. Would you tell her the truth if you were in my position?

* You can also use could instead of would (e.g. If I werent busy, I could help you).
