EAGLES - 26
IMPACT PLAYS: CRUCIAL TIMES IN A GAME
There are four crucial, impactful types of plays presented during any game of four down
football. The first is a momentum swing caused by a turn-over or long gain or big loss, the
second is 3rd Down situations and the third is the 3 minute warning near the end of each half.
The fourth impact play is Special Teams plays.

1) Momentum Swing:
Momentum swings come in all kinds of situations (turnovers such as fumble & recovery
and interception; long gains through a run or pass, a big loss on a sack, a big play such as
blocked punt or kick). They can be positive or negative depending on who created the
momentum or who is losing the momentum.

The way a team responds to these situations is an indication of the character of the
players. We will have the mindset that these troubles (when negative) or advantages
(when positive) are OPPORTUNITIES TO DISPLAY GREATNESS AS A TEAM!!

Our response will be rise to the challenge of troubles or take control by cashing in on
any advantage presented! This response will be the result of concentration on the task
at hand and commitment to executing our game plans.

2) Third Down Situations:

During any drive the outcome of 3rd down situations plays a crucial part in the success of
the drive. Converting a 3rd down situation into a first down sustains the drive; stopping
a 3rd down situation kills a drive. Both of these situations occur several times during a
game. Our success ratio in these situations will determine the success ratio in the win-
loss column.

We will work diligently as a team to execute, with precision and poise in order to
increase our success ratio in these situations. During practice time our Take-off Period
will be geared to practicing various 3rd down situations to allow us to work on increasing
our success in these situations.

3) Three Minute Warning:

Many games are won or lost during this crucial time in a game. We will work diligently
as a team to execute, without confusion, with precision and poise in order to manage
the time properly and come from behind to win if necessary, or preserve a victory if
ahead. It is very important that everyone on the team know how the timing of the three
minutes is handled so we can manage the time properly.

EAGLES - 31
During the three minute period the clock stops after every play.

It starts on the Referees Signal when: It starts on the snap of the ball when:
1) The ball goes dead on field of play 1. The ball goes out of bounds
2) The chains are moved at 1st down 2. An incomplete forward pass
3) An injured player taken from field 3. There is a change of possession
4) A team calls a time-out 4. An application of a penalty
5) A penalty is declined

It starts on a touch during a kick-off.

EAGLES - 32
OFFENSIVE PLAYBOOK
OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY
We will be an Offense that will use a balanced, unpredictable and fundamentally sound
approach to defeating any defense. This Offense allows us to take advantage of weaknesses in
defensive formations, defensive reactions or defensive personnel.

Rationale:

BALANCE SPREADS THEM OUT! By threatening an attack anywhere on the field (by varying our
point of attack along the LOS in our running game and varying our launch point and reception
point in our passing game) we force the defense to defend the entire field and honour their
defensive responsibilities which in turn creates space for us to attack.

UNPREDICTABLE KEEPS THEM GUESSING! By varying our attack point, by breaking tendencies
in our play selection in down & distance situations, by using misdirection, counters, play-action
and fakes we keep the defense guessing where and how they are being attacked causing
confusion and hesitation in their reaction and play on the field which in turn gives us an
advantage.

FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND ALLOWS US TO DOMINATE THEM! By focusing on execution of

fundamentals, blocking and playing until the whistle, eliminating mistakes such as missed
assignments and penalties, and, through outstanding conditioning we are promoting an
aggressive and intense style of play which in turn will allow us to dominate the opposition
physically and mentally throughout the game.

THEY CANNOT STOP US! By taking advantage of structural, tactical or personnel weaknesses
we will execute plays that allow us to attack where the defense is not.

EAGLES - 103
OFFENSIVE OBJECTIVES
Winning football games hinges upon accomplishing our Objectives:

1) Score!
Make things happen / Create big plays (Think TOUCHDOWN on every play)
Block until the whistle / Break tackles
Break long runs / break long passes

2) Control the Ball

Eliminate Turnovers (fumbles / interceptions)
Eliminate mental mistakes (off-side penalties / missed assignments)
Win 3rd Down situations (move the chains)
Gain positive yardage on every play
Sustain long drives

3) Establish a consistent (average 4+ yds per play) RUNNING game

Threaten multiple points of attack
Have more than 1 blocker clearing POA / close off pursuit lanes / block downfield
Apply devastating blocks to intimidate opposition
Attack weaknesses in defense (fronts, player reactions, personnel)

4) Execute a high percentage (60% +) PASSING game

Protect passer (no sacks, no hits, and no hurries)
Vary launch point / vary reception point
Attack weaknesses in defense (coverages, player reactions, personnel)

5) Improve understanding of Offense

Know assignments
Recognize defenses (fronts, coverages, reactions, player weaknesses)
Awareness of Audibles
Study Film

6) Team Consistency
Everyone on same page
Get GREAT at what we do
Execute aggressively and precisely

EAGLES - 104
OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE TARGETS
Performance Targets are the observable and measurable criteria used to determine our success
on Offense. We have listed fourteen targets. If we achieve nine or more of them in a game we
should win that game! Eight or less indicates our Offense did not perform as expected.

1) Score 4 touchdowns.
2) Gain 200 + yards rushing.
3) Break four 20+ yard run plays.
4) Gain 150+ yards passing.
5) Break two 30+ yard pass plays.
6) 60% + passing efficiency.
7) Engineer two long drives (10+ plays).
8) Win all 3rd Down situations.
9) Gain 16+ 1st Downs.
10) 100% scoring efficiency (FG or TD) when ball is inside 30 yd line.
11) No Punting situations with the ball inside our 35 yd line.
12) No Turnovers.
13) No Sacks.
14) No mental mistakes (missed assignments / penalties).

EAGLES - 105
COMMUNICATION
HUDDLE

Communication regarding our tactics and play will be communicated in our huddle. We will use
two forms of huddle. The first is an Open huddle where everyone faces the LOS from 8 yards
away. The second will be Line huddle where every lines up on the LOS ready to utilize a no
huddle offense.

OPEN HUDDLE PROCEDURE

LOS

Q
T G C G T
Y B R R A Z

1. The C calls the huddle 8 yards from the ball, facing the defense, as quickly as possible.
Offensive players line up as diagrammed. Everyone stands with hands on hips, head up
looking at defense.
2. When QB is ready to call play he will enter the huddle and say READY. Everyone stops
talking and look at QB.
3. The QB will call the play and snap count once. If the play is unclear, or not heard, call
CHECK and the QB will repeat the call.
4. After call the C and wide receivers will leave huddle and trot to positions.
5. The QB will repeat snap count.
6. After second snap count call the QB breaks the huddle with READY-HIT!
On HIT everyone clap hands and trots to their positions.

PLAY CALL IN OPEN HUDDLE

The order of calling the play:

1. Backfield Formation
2. Alignment of receivers
3. Motion (if any)
4. Play (two-digit number with code word tag)
5. Snap Count
6. Repeat Snap Count
7. Ready-Go

Here is how it sounds:

RAM, ROSE, 21 QUICK TRAP ON 2 ON 2 READY-GO
(formation/alignment) (play) (snap count and repeat) (break huddle)
SPLIT, TRAY ROB, 70-842, ON SET ON SET READY-GO

EAGLES - 106
LINE HUDDLE PROCEDURE

LOS
T G C G T

Q
Y B R R A Z

We will utilize Line at any point during the game when we feel we can unsettle the defense,
we can exploit a formation or personnel weakness or we want to control play calling and/or
timing from the LOS. Line does not necessarily indicate we are in a hurry to snap the ball or
run a play. The QB will give an Alert call (Lightening or Turtle) if he needs to indicate a
specific pace we need to execute at (See TEMPO CALLS section below for details).

When Line huddle procedures are necessary the QB will call for them: LineLine. At the
end of a play everyone must quickly line up at the LOS in their ready positions from our BASE
Formation/Alignment (determined in our Game Plan).

PLAY CALLING IN LINE HUDDLE

The QB will call any motions or alternative Formations/Alignments necessary while players are
lining up. Players will move accordingly listening to the play call.

The QB will then call the play using our CODE or AUDIBLE system (see CODE WORDS and
AUDIBLE PLAYS CALLED AT LOS sections below for greater details).

We will use the DOWN (check the sideline markers) as the snap count number when AUDIBLE
system is used.

Here is how it sounds (on a 2nd Down play): READY ARGO 3 ARGO 3 SETHUTHUT!

If the QB wants to revert to using a HUDDLE he will call for a huddle by signaling and calling
Huddle Huddle and we will revert to using OPEN HUDDLE PROCEDURE.

EAGLES 107
LOS PROCEDURE
1) GENERAL INFORMATION
a. At your LOS Ready Position scan the defensive formation. Scan the defense consistently
from centre to your sideline noting where players are lined up. Try to determine what
responsibilities they will have at snap of the ball.
b. Assume a 2-point stance. Line, call out the defensive front players by formation (i.e. 40
wide). Confirm this identification with your line mates. Receivers, call out the
coverage players by perceived coverage (i.e. Cover 3 Invert).
c. The QB should make his hands ready to receive the snap when he is prepared to begin
the cadence (i.e. READY) as this will put pressure on the Defense with the threat of a
quick play.
d. The Line will go into a 3-point stance when the QB calls READY.

2) CADENCE
We will use a 3-part rhythmic cadence at the LOS to share information and snap the ball.
a. READY Command. This will be the beginning of the Cadence and will be called after any
of the Coded play calls (see CODE WORDS AT LOS section below). Everyone will be
ready to execute the play.
b. AUDIBLE Call. This will be either a live call or dead call (see AUDIBLES PLAYS CALLED AT
LOS section below) and will be ended by calling SET.
c. SNAP COUNT. Call of HUT repetitively until ball is snapped.
Here is how it sounds: READY 2- ARGO 3 2-ARGO 3 SET HUT HUT HUT
(READY COMMAND) (AUDIBLE CALL) (SNAP COUNT)

3) SNAPPING OF THE BALL

We will have the ability to snap the ball on any of the following VERBAL commands:
On FIRST SOUND ball is snapped on READY. This snap count will usually be used
only after any of the CODE WORDS are called at LOS (see below).
Here is how it sounds: READY
On SET ball is snapped immediately after Audible call has been made.
Here is how it sounds: READY 2- ARGO 3 2-ARGO 3 SET
On 1 or 2 or 3 ball is snapped on the corresponding numbered HUT (i.e. On 2
means the ball will be snapped on second HUT).
Here is how it sounds: READY 2- ARGO 3 2-ARGO 3 SET HUT HUT
On READY-HUT used during our FREEZE Plays (see FREEZE CALLS section below).
The ball is snapped on the HUT called after the second READY.
Here is how it sounds: READY (AUDIBLE) SET HUT HUT HUTREADY-HUT

We will also have the ability to snap the ball on a SILENT count.
On SILENT 1 or 2 used when crowd noise is an issue or to confuse the defense.
After Coding or Audibling, the QB will silently indicate to the C (who is
watching QB through his legs) that he is ready for snap. The C will lift head up
to face defense and count silently Steamboats before snapping the ball. (i.e.
On Silent 2 means the ball will be snapped after 2 Steamboats have been
silently counted in Cs head). All players will either watch ball for snap or count
silently in their head in order to get off on snap count.

EAGLES - 108
4) FREEZE CALLS
These are calls we will use to attempt to draw the defense offside.
A play will be called in the Huddle with a Snap Count of On Ready-Hut. This indicates a
FREEZE is in effect.
At the LOS the QB will call our regular Cadence adding emphasis and hard inflections to the
Set and early Hut calls in order to draw the defense offside.
When the defense jumps offside the C will immediately snap the ball to the QB (who will
step towards LOS and take a knee) thus catching the defense for a penalty.
If there is no movement by the defense then the play called in the Huddle will be executed
and the ball will be snapped on the Hut immediately following the second Ready call.
Here is how it sounds: READY 2-ARGO 3, 2-ARGO 3 SET!HUTHUT!HUTREADY-HUT

FROZEN is another call we can use to attempt to draw the defense offside. This call will be
used on 3rd Downs when we need less than 5-yards to gain a 1st Down.
There will be no play called in the Huddle. The QB will simply call FROZEN Play in huddle.
We will line up at LOS and QB will call our regular Cadence adding emphasis and hard
inflections to the Set and Hut calls in an attempt to draw defense offside.
If the defense jumps offside the C will immediately snap the ball.
If they do not jump offside we will allow play clock to run down and take the Delay of Game
penalty and Punt the ball on 4th Down.

5) CODE WORDS AT LOS

We will have several Code Words we can use at LOS to communicate.

OMAHA indicates that the play clock is running down. Everyone must hurry to their LOS
ready position. Any movement calls will be cancelled. Ball will be snapped On
FIRST SOUND.

RODEO is a call we can use to repeat the last play run. Ball will be snapped On FIRST
SOUND.

MIRROR is a call we can use to mirror the last play run or the play called in the Huddle.
(i.e. Last play run was a 70-502 to the right. We will now run 71-502 to left.
Play called in Huddle was 34 Lead to right. We will now run 35 Lead to left).
Ball will be snapped On FIRST SOUND.

EASY is a call we will add to RODEO or MIRROR to confuse defense as to the snap count.
This call changes the snap count to On ONE.

LASSO is a dummy call used to confuse the defense. It has no meaning and is designed
to confuse the defense. If the defense jumps offside on FIRST SOUND after the
call the C will snap the ball. Execute the play called in Huddle or through
Audible after proper Cadence is called.

EAGLES - 109
6) FREEBIES
Our system allows us to make calls at the LOS to take advantage of Defensive coverage.
There are four different that looks we can capitalize on them Freebies as they allow us a
free attempt at a big play. To take advantage of these Freebies requires the Offensive
Backfield (QB and RBs & Receivers) to recognize the Coverage and adjust accordingly.

RUNNING FREEBIES: As the Offense Backfield approach the LOS they will scan the
Defensive coverage (see DEFENSIVE COVERAGE RECOGNITION section below) looking for
Freebies. The QB will call which Freebie is available (if any) using the Code words listed
below and we will execute the adjustment to the Freebie. QB will throw ball immediately
(i.e. 2 step drop) to indentified Freebie Receiver. Line will execute 90-series blocking.

KAMI indicates there is no 00 located in deep middle coverage (i.e. Cover 0). The
two Receivers on the wide field will run a set pattern: Inside Receiver will run at
the Safety (4) and execute a Hook route at 10 yds; Outside Receiver will run at
inside shoulder of the Corner (5) and execute a skinny Post route at 7 yds;
(there is no inside help for 5 on this route). Ball will be snapped On FIRST
SOUND.
OVEN indicates the Safety (4) is aligned at a depth of 10+ yds, or is aligned well
outside our Inside Receiver (i.e. Cover 3). The Inside Receiver will align wider on
a pre-snap motion to get away from Linebacker coverage and release on a
HOT route. Ball will be snapped On FIRST SOUND.
RAMBO indicates a Receiver is uncovered. The uncovered Receiver will release on a
HOT route. Ball will be snapped On FIRST SOUND.
ISO indicates there is an obvious mismatch in coverage. We will isolate the
mismatched Receiver through motion. The Receiver will run an OPTION route
at 10 yds. Ball will be snapped on FIRST SOUND.

7) AUDIBLES PLAYS CALLED AT LOS

We can change or call our plays at the LOS through Audible calls. The Audible call will be
made in both directions at LOS after the READY command has been given. Our slotbacks
or tight ends will relay the calls to our wide receivers.

The Audible call will consist of a single-digit number followed by a word (to reference a
series of plays see below) and another single-digit number (to reference a play in a
series see below).

Here is how it sounds: 2 ARGO 1 2 ARGO 1

Word Reference:

WORD SERIES WORD SERIES

ARGO 10 DOLPHIN 70
TI CAT 20 STEELER 80
RED BLACK 30 PACKER 90

EAGLES - 110
Example of a Play Reference Sheet:

Series / Play 1 2 3 4
10 14 Flow 1-14 Flow 11 Flow 19 Flow
20 21 Quick Trap 28 Quick Pitch 1-20 Quick Rt
30 35 Lead 0-35 Lead 38 Lead 1-38 Lead
70 502 687 Backdoor Screen
80 687 842 Option
90 40 500 Rocket Screen

LIVE CALL: If the single-digit number (i.e. 2 in the example above) matches our snap count
then the play called at LOS (i.e. ARGO-1 in example) is LIVE and we would run our 14 Flow
play (see Play Reference Chart) on Hut, Hut (second Hut).

DEAD CALL: If the single-digit number does not match our snap count then the play called at
LOS is DEAD and we would run the play called in the Huddle.

8) CHECK-INS PLAYS CALLED FROM THE SIDELINE

We will have the ability to have the plays called from our sideline through a signaling system.

In order to prevent the defense from determining our signals there will be two hand
signalers (back-up QB and Offensive Coordinator) and a person with a Board with code
words. Each one will be signaling plays. Only one of these methods will be live. We will flash
a coloured card which will indicate which signaler is LIVE. Players will only attend to the
signal from that person.

RUNNING THE CHECK-IN SYSTEM: This system will be run from our LINE HUDDLE. All
players will hustle to their LOS Ready positions and face the sideline looking for the signals.
If any player is uncertain of signaled call yell CHECK and QB will confirm the play called.
Once the signals have been sent in the QB will begin his cadence but will not call the Audible
portion of the call. The ball will be snapped On SET.
Here is how it sounds: READY SET

EAGLES - 111
TEMPO CONTROLLING THE PACE OF THE GAME

We believe that dictating the pace of plays and the game gives us an advantage over the
defense and allows us to control the length of the game.

According to the rules of the game, we will have 20 seconds to snap the ball from the time the
official signals that a play is ready to begin. By how we use this Play Clock we can either
lengthen the game (by executing more plays) or shorten the game (by executing fewer plays)
depending on our tactical situation. We will control the tempo to our advantage.

According to the rules of the game, during the first 27 minutes of either half the Game Clock
runs continually except when the officials stop it because the ball goes out of bounds, a pass
goes incomplete, a penalty has been called, multiple player substitutions occur, or, a player is
injured. The clock starts again on the Officials signal (at which point we have our 20 seconds to
execute a play). During the last 3-minutes of each half the Game Clock stops after each play.
The Game Clock will begin on the Officials signal for most plays, but if a ball goes out of
bounds, a pass goes incomplete or a penalty has been called the Game Clock will begin on the
snap of the ball (in either case we will have 20 seconds to execute of play when the ball has
been placed for the next play.

We will be able to execute our Offense at 3 different tempos in order to take advantage of
these rules governing the timing of the game. Our Base tempo will be CRUISE, our Fast tempo
will be ROCKET, and our Slow tempo will be TURTLE. What follows will be a discussion of how
these tempos will be executed.

CRUISE TEMPO:
Our Base Tempo will be Cruise. Unless otherwise indicated, this tempo is how we will operate
our Offense.

We want to snap the ball, timing-wise, as efficiently as possible. We can run this tempo from
our Huddle or from the LOS.

Tactically we can execute our Cruise tempo at a fast pace (see Rocket Tempo for methods) or at
a slow pace (see Turtle Tempo for methods). QB will dictate pace by play calling and cadence;
Bench will dictate pace by substitution patterns and signal calling timing.

ROCKET TEMPO:
Rocket is our fastest tempo. We will use this tempo when we need to score quickly! Time is our
opponent. We do not want to waste time. Make sure everyone knows when clock stops and
when clock starts. Make sure we know how many Time outs we have remaining.
We will operate predominantly from our Line Huddle and want the ball snapped within 5
seconds of the ball being placed by an official (i.e. use as little clock time as possible on each
play).

EAGLES - 112
Executing the Rocket Tempo: To begin Rocket Tempo, the QB will call Alert: Rocket; Alert: Rocket.
All players will hurry to the LOS and be in your Ready Position immediately.
We will have a game-planned sequence of 3-4 plays to run that should give us success
moving the ball. If the QB calls a play it will be via Audible and he will call the Audible as
everyone is lining up at LOS so listen intently while getting to your Ready Position.
We will use mostly Passing Plays during this Tempo (most reward and stops clock if
incomplete). There will be very limited motion (sliding, skating or run-ups are okay during
Cadence); just align in the end motion location (to save time).
The QB will assure everyone is aligned properly and then use a quick Cadence (i.e. Ready, Hut).
On all plays: ball carriers must fight to get out of bounds (it stops the clock); if tackled
inbounds, ball carriers must un-pile quickly from tackles (team mates get over to tackle to
assist the un-piling) and hand ball to nearest official who can set the ball for next play
quickly; QB must release the pass on a 5 count (dont take a sack and remember clock stops
on an incomplete pass).
If the clock is stopped (i.e. ball out of bounds, incomplete pass, penalty), play starts on next
snap of ball so we can go into our Open Huddle. QB should call 2-3 plays for the next
sequence while in Huddle.
We will have a Kill the Clock play. The QB will take a quick snap and throw ball at ground
to stop the clock. QB must kill the clock even if team is not lined up as the penalty
application will stop the clock.
Emphasis during our Rocket Tempo is HUSTLE, POISE, and EXECUTION!

TURTLE TEMPO:
Turtle is our slowest tempo. We will use this tempo when we have a lead on the scoreboard
and want to keep the ball from our opponent.
We can operate from either our Huddle or from the LOS and want the ball snapped as close to
the end of the Play Clock as possible (i.e. run as much time off clock as possible on each play).

Executing the Turtle Tempo: To begin Turtle Tempo, the QB will call Alert: Turtle; Alert: Turtle.
All players will hurry to the Huddle (most likely approach) or LOS (if we choose this method,
the Line will be in 2-point stance expecting to be lined up for 20 or more seconds and only
take 3-point stance when QB calls READY at start of Cadence).
The play will be communicated to all players (either through Huddle call, Audible or Signals).
We will mostly using Running Plays during this Tempo (less risk of stopping clock and
potentially running most time).
5 seconds (if play clock is not visible look to sideline; we will point at QB with 7 seconds
remaining in time).
On All Plays: secure the ball (they will be trying to strip it); stay in bounds; take your time
un-piling from tackle (especially Line) without being obvious; Receivers get as far downfield
as possible and then jog back to LOS and Huddle slowly without being obvious.
If there is no need to advance the football (i.e. time on clock, downs available and Defensive
time-outs available means we can run out the clock) we will enter our Victory Sequence
which will include our Jumbo Formation. The QB will take the snap, take one step back and
take a knee. (See Victory Sequence in the Running Plays Section for more details
Emphasis during our Turtle Tempo is CALM, COOL and EXECUTION!

FORMATIONS
LINE POSTURE
Our Offensive Line will be a balanced line with Guards and Tackles flanking our Centre.

3 3 3 3

T G C G T
The Centre will align in front of the ball at arms length from it.
The Guards will align 3 feet from the Centre so that their toes are in line with the Centres heels
(about 6 inches back from Centre).
The Tackles will align 3 feet from the Guards on the same line as the Guards.

The objective of the splits is to create space for our Run Game. The wider the split between
Offensive linemen the better it is for our Run Game. If the Defensive personnel do not widen
with our splits we have created excellent blocking angles for our wide plays. If the Defensive
personnel do widen with our splits we have created space between the Tackles for our inside
plays.

If we can widen our splits versus specific teams it is in our best interests to do so. The only time
we will shorten our splits is if the Defensive personnel consistently penetrate into the gaps
without being blocked.

MOVEMENT

Movement consists of one or more players changing the LOS Ready Position to another more
advantageous position before the snap of the ball.

Rationale
Movement:
provides a pre-snap read of the Defensive Coverage and Force Responsibilities
creates mismatches in Defensive Coverage
causes Defense to play on the move creating confusion in Coverage and Force
puts our Backs and Receivers into optimum position for Run block angles
aids our Backs and Receivers in release from LOS

DEFENSIVE FRONT RECOGNITION
It is absolutely essential that everyone on the Offense recognizes the Defense we are facing.
Part of the identification process is to recognize which of the Defensive personnel you are
responsible for blocking. To this end, we will assign a number to each of the Defensive
personnel. You will be assigned to block one of the defenders based on this number system.
Defensive Fronts we will face are either 7-man fronts (odd or even) or 8-man fronts (even or
gap). What follows are illustrations of these fronts.

DEFENSIVE COVERAGE RECOGNITION
It is absolutely essential that everyone in the Offensive Backfield (QB, RB and Receivers)
recognizes the Coverage we may be facing in order to know how to attack the Defenders with
our routes and also to know how many potential Rushers we will need to block.

Map of Zones
We need a consistent method of recognizing the various zones which will be covered:

The level of the field from the LOS to 5 yds downfield is considered the Underneath area and is
rarely covered by Defenders.

The next level is the Intermediate Zones. These zones extend vertically from 5 yds 20 yds
downfield. There are 9 zones starting in middle of field with the Hole (5 yds); on either side are
the Hook Zones (from Hole zone to 1 yd before Hashmark); Seam Zones (from Hook zone to 5
yards wide of Hashmark); Curl (from Seam zone to 11 yds from sideline); Flat (from Curl zone to
sideline). The dual-responsibility unit of the Defense (linebackers and select Defensive Backs)
covers these zones.

The next level is the Deep Zones. These zones extend vertically from 20 yds to the back of the
endzone. Depending on the number of Defenders assigned the Deep zones can be divided into
Halfs, Thirds or Quarters.

EAGLES 137
RUNNING PLAYS
This section of the Eagles Playbook contains information pertaining to our methods of running
the ball. It will describe the five running series we will use, include the Elements of Success for
Running Plays and explanation and diagrams of our Running Plays

Running Series

A Series of Running Plays is group of plays that follow the same backfield movement and/or
flow which allows us to sequentially threaten multiple Points of Attack (POA). This allows us to
threaten the entire LOS thereby delaying the Defenses recognition of our intended POA which
leads to improved odds of success for the play.

We will utilize five separate and distinct Running Series. They are numbered 10, 20, 30, 40 and
50. The first number will indicate the series (i.e. backfield movements and flow) and the second
number will indicate the POA. The POAs are generally inside play, off-tackle play and
perimeter play.

Numbering of POAs: Even numbers will indicate a play to the right side of the formation
whereas odd numbers will indicate a play to the left. The number will also indicate the width of
the POA. The higher the number the wider the play (i.e 1, 2 or 3 indicates an inside play; 4, 5, 6
or 7 indicate an off-tackle play; 8 or 9 indicates a perimeter play).

Any play number preceded by a Zero (0) indicates a counter or reverse action off of the Backs
initial flow. Heres how it sounds: 0-34 Lead

Any play number preceded by a One (1) indicates a play action pass off of the Backs initial
flow. Heres how it sounds: 1-14 Flow

The five series are:

10 Series: Our Flow series.

20 Series: Our Quick series.

30 Series: Our Lead series.

40 Series: Our Goal line/Short Yardage (Gold) series.

50 Series: Our Search/Draw series.

Each of these Series will be described in greater detail on the following pages.

EAGLES - 139
ELEMENTS OF SUCCESSFUL RUNNING PLAYS
Any successful Running Play involves 12 men executing their assignment. Each assignment is
critical and must be carried out with intensity and aggressiveness. There are a number of
elements that go into successfully executing a Running Play.

Defensive Recognition: Everyone on the Offense must recognize the Defense through the use of
our numbering system (see previous sections on Defensive Front Recognition and Defensive
Coverage Recognition). This allows us to maximize our blocking scheme and take advantage of
what the Defense gives us.

Ball Control: The exchanges between Centre and Quarterback, and, Quarterback and Running
Back must be reliable and consistent. Each player must work to control the ball during the
exchanges. As well, all players must protect the ball against weather and against the
Defenders attempts to dislodge the ball. Protecting the ball is paramount!

Play Faking: All fakes must be carried out as if you have the ball. Be aggressive and convincing
in your fakes. These fakes help in isolating Defensive support as the Defender must remain to
guard against your potential attack. A good fake is worth two blocks.

Proper Timing: The play of the Line and the action of the Backfield must be integrated so that
the Back is reaching the point of attack at the same time as the blocking is fully engaged. This
will require proper footwork (check steps, misdirection steps) of the Backs and using proper
blocking technique footwork by the Line

Blocking at Point of Attack: Blocking at the POA is crucial. The Blockers must fire out
aggressively and widen or seal the Defender from the POA creating a Running Lane which the
Back can exploit.

Backside & Downfield Blocking: Because most defensive tackles are made by pursuing
Defenders or Defensive Backs, blocking away from the POA is just as important as the blocking
at the POA. Backside and Downfield Blocking removes the pursuit and scrape support of the
Defense and is the difference between a 4 yard gain and a 40 yard gain. Blockers must
anticipate the Defenders reaction to a play and move to intercept their pursuit to the ball.
When engaging in this type of block, focus on getting between the Defender and the Running
Lane. Sealing off pursuit is more important than driving the defender backwards.
EVERYONE IS ASSIGNED TO BLOCK SOMEONE; EVERYONE MUST BE BLOCKED!!

PROPER EXECUTION OF THESE ELEMENTS WILL ASSURE US OF A SUCCESSFUL RUN GAME!

EAGLES - 140
FLOW SERIES (10)

The Flow Series is designed to attack the inside and the off-tackle by sending a Back at those
POAs. The QB will place the ball in both the Backs arms and then continue to attack the
perimeter with an Option Back supporting him. The Flow will continue until whistle to disguise
where the ball is actually going.

The plays are quick hitting but for timing purposes the Backs leave on the snap of the ball.

The Series must be run from one of our 2-Back Personnel Packages (Regular, Trips, Ted, Jumbo,
or Heavy). The QB must be under Centre therefore our Base 2-Back set is a must.

There is one core sequence in this Series. The play-side Back will attack the backside Dive, while
the backside Back will attack the play-side Off-tackle. The QB will open to the backside Dive
and either Hand-off or fake a Hand-off to the Back. The QB will then pivot towards the play-
side Off-tackle and either Hand-off or fake a Hand-off to the Back. The QB will then attack the
play-side Perimeter at full speed. The backside Slot Receiver will be motioning Across the
formation after the snap of the ball to provide an Option support for the QB attacking the
perimeter force Defender.

The faking on this Series is paramount to the success of any Play. We are counting on freezing
the Defenders by the backfield action which will cut down on the support and/or pursuit of the
Defense.

There is a Reverse component and a Play Action component to the series.

QUICK SERIES (20)

The Quick Series is designed to attack the perimeter and the middle by sending a Back at those
POAs quickly and getting the ball to the Back quickly. All blocking is set-up to open a Running
Lane in both POA simultaneously to disguise where the ball is actually going.

The play side Back will attack the perimeter, while the
back side Back will attack the middle. The QB will open to the play side Back and either toss or
fake a Pitch to him. The QB will then pivot back to the Back attacking the middle and either
Hand-off or fake handing the ball to him. The QB will then Roll out at full speed to the back side
perimeter.

The faking on this Series is paramount to the success of any of the Plays. We are counting on
freezing the Defenders by the backfield action which will cut down on the support and/or
pursuit of the Defense.

There is a Play Action component to the series.

LEAD SERIES (30)

The Lead Series is designed to attack Defensive Linebacker alignments with a lead drive block by
the Blocking Back.

The plays are quick hitting but for timing purposes the Backs leave on the snap of the ball.

The Series should be run from one of our 2-Back Personnel Packages (Regular, Trips, Ted,
Jumbo, or Heavy). Either of the 2-Back Sets (Base, Split Gun) will work. The Series can also be
run from our Tray 1-Back Set (with Back set away from play side when in Gun; i.e. Gun Ram or
Lion) and the inside Slot Receiver acting as the Lead block

There are three core sequences in this Series. 30 Lead (Right or Left) is our play attacking the
bubble on the inside (A or B Gap) created by Linebacker placement (by aligning off the LOS).
34/35 Lead is our off-tackle play attacking the End Man on LOS (EMLOS). 38/39 Lead is our
perimeter play attacking the wide field. In all of these plays the Blocking Back is responsible for
leading or escorting the Running Back to the POA.

From the 34-35 Lead we have a reverse play (0-34/0-35 Lead). We also have two play-action
passes from our Core plays. From the 34-35 Lead we have 1-34/1-35 Lead and from the 38-39
Lead we have 1-38/1-39 Lead.

GOLD SERIES (40) Short Yardage/Goal Line

Gold Series is our Short Yardage/Goal Line series of plays. We will automatically engage this
Series is we have 1 yard or less on 3rd or 4th Down (i.e. Short Yardage) or we are inside the 5
yard line (i.e. Goal Line).

The Gold Series includes a set Personnel Package (TED 1 Tight Receiver; 1 Slot Receiver; 2
Wide Receivers and 2 Running Backs). For this series of plays we will shorten our Line splits (i.e.
1.5 - 2 feet).

We anticipate 8 or 9 Defenders in the box and should be prepared for this.

There are two (2) Core plays in this Series: 44/45 Gold (Off-tackle) and 48/49 Gold (Perimeter).

We also have two (2) Complementary plays from our 44/45 Gold: 41/42 Gold (QB keeper in A-

SEARCH SERIES (50) Draws

The Search Series of plays involves a draw type of action designed to support and compliment
our Passing Game. These plays are designed to take advantage of a strong Pass Rush by the
Defense. Additionally, knowing these plays are in our repertoire we can influence the depth of
zone drop of the LBers who attempt to defend or react to these plays.

There will be a draw play to support our 70 Series Pass Game (52/53 Search), one to support
our 80 Series Pass Game (56/57 Search) and one to support our 90 Series Pass Game (50/51
Search).

We also can fake these Search actions (to confuse the Defense) by calling Search after a given
Pass Game Play. Here is how it sounds: 70-842 Search. We will have the PS Back and QB
fake the 70 Series draw play (i.e. 52 Search). The receivers and QB will continue to execute the
70-842 Play while the Back will run his Search play trying to influence the Pass Rush and
Linebackers.

The Series can be run from our 1-Back or 2-Back Personnel Packages and the QB can be in
either Gun position or under Centre.

Executing the 70/71 Search or 80/81 Search:

The QB will take his pass play drop (70 or 80) and hand the ball to the Running Back at a depth
of 5 yds and continue to fake his drop to confuse the Defense.

The back will set-up behind either the PS Guard (7-52/7-53 Search) or the PS Tackle (8-56/8-57
Search) and look to be in Pass Block set. The plays are delayed so the Back leaves on the hand-
off of the ball and will read and react to (Search) the movement of the Defenders in the Attack
Area (either behind PS G or PS T) and run to daylight.

The Blocking Back (or 3rd Slot Receiver) is responsible for blocking the PS EMLOS.

Executing the 90/91 Search:

The QB will take his 3-step drop and then attack the play-side A-Gap and run to daylight.

The RBs will attack-block the C/D gaps to their side on snap of ball..

PASSING PLAYS
This section of the Eagles Playbook contains information pertaining to our methods of passing
the ball. It will describe the four passing series we will use, include the Elements of Success for
Passing Plays, explain several Passing Concepts and describe each of our Passing series
including Protections, Route Trees and diagrams of our Passing Plays.

Passing Series

We will utilize three separate and distinct Passing Series. They are numbered 70/71, 80/81,
90/91. The first number will indicate the series and the second number will indicate the
playside: 0 is to the right and 1 is to the left.

There is a group of Play-action pass plays and they are numbered 100s. Also, there is a series
of Draw plays which support and compliment our Passing Plays and they are numbered 50s.
Both of these series are detailed in our Running Plays section.

The five series are:

70 Series: Our 5-step QB drop with Step-back protection.

80 Series: Our Roll-out QB drop with Turn-back protection.

90 Series: Our 3-step QB drop with GOLO protection.

100 Series: Our Play-action plays. These plays stem from our Running Plays.

50 Series: Our Search plays. These draw plays support our 70, 80 and 90 series QB drops.

Each of the 70, 80 and 90 Series will be described in greater detail on the following pages.

EAGLES 183
ELEMENTS OF SUCCESSFUL PASSING PLAYS
Any successful Passing Play involves 12 men executing their assignment. Each assignment is
critical and must be carried out with intensity and aggressiveness. There are a number of
elements that go into successfully executing a Passing Play.

Defensive Recognition: Everyone on the Offense must recognize the Defense through the use of
our numbering system (see previous sections on Defensive Front Recognition and Defensive
Coverage Recognition). This allows us to maximize our blocking scheme, adjust our pass routes
and take advantage of what the Defense gives us.

Execute Protection Scheme: Using the protection scheme designed for use for each series, we
must use proper blocking techniques and be aggressive in allowing our QB the maximum
amount of time to drop, set-up, read the coverage and deliver the pass. Conversely, the QB
must be very quick and use proper footwork in achieving the correct drop, set-up and delivery
of the pass to allow protection to fulfill its mandate.

Well Executed Pass Routes: Our Receivers must run their routes precisely, quickly and
consistently to coincide with the play being executed if we are to achieve success in our passing
game. Our Receivers must catch the ball consistently and gain additional yardage after the
catch. Also, Receivers are expected to block aggressively after the ball has been thrown!

Well Executed QB Reads: The QB must locate his keys prior to snap of ball, watch these keys
during his drop and setup and make quick and appropriate decisions regarding where to throw
the ball. The QB must also assure that the type of throw (Trajectory of Pass) is appropriate for
the Play Call and the Reception Point.

PROPER EXECUTION OF THESE ELEMENTS WILL ASSURE US OF A SUCCESSFUL PASS GAME!

EAGLES 184
CONCEPTS OF THE EAGLES PASSING GAME
1) Protection Scheme
We will be utilizing a 5 + 2 Protection Scheme which means all five Linemen and two Backs
will be used to protect the QBs Launch Point. This provides us with maximum protection
and with the Backs allowed to Release if their man drops into coverage allows us to
maximize the number of Receivers in a pattern to manipulate the Defensive Coverage.

2) Route Patterns
We will utilize a 3-man playside pattern and a 1-man backside route.
The 3 Receivers on the playside allows us to run 3v2 pattern schemes giving us an advantage.
The 1 Receiver on the backside allows for the potential of an isolated man-on-man coverage in
space if the Defensive Coverage rotates to the 3-man side which gives us an advantage.

3) Recognition of Coverages
This section supplements and extends the Defensive Coverage Recognition section
previously discussed. Here we will discuss how to read the Defensive Coverage based on
Pre-snap and Post-snap reads of Coverage Defenders Focus, Alignment of Coverage
Defenders, Coverage Defender Reaction to Motion and the Drop taken by Coverage
Defenders. Keys to Read:
Pre-Snap: i) Focus of Coverage Defender
On you -> Man Coverage
On QB -> Zone Coverage
ii) Alignment of Coverage Defender
Inside shade on you -> Man Coverage
Tight on you -> Man Coverage
8-10 yds from you -> Zone Coverage
Structure of Coverage -> (see Defensive Coverage Recognition)
iii) Reaction of Coverage Defender to Motion
Adjusts with you -> Man Coverage
Minimal Adjustment -> Zone Coverage
Post-Snap: i) Drop of Coverage Defender
Mirrors your release/stem -> Man Coverage
Backpedals -> Man Coverage
Retreats/Angles to a destination -> Zone Coverage
Turns and Runs -> Zone Coverage
ii) Structural Adjustments
00 rotates from middle to a side -> Cover 2 or 4
4 quick deep & outside; 5 sits -> Cover 3
4 moves laterally & 5 drops deep -> Cover 6

EAGLES 185
4) Attack Principles
It is vitally important that all Receivers know and understand how we are attempting to
manipulate the Defenders and/or Defensive Coverage and make the necessary moves to
maximize our success in getting Receivers open!

A) Manipulating Zone Coverage

To properly manipulate Zone Coverage all Receivers must understand the Construction of
Zone Defenses and the concepts of PUSH-HOLD and SQUEEZE-STRETCH and how to apply
them.

Construction of Zone Defenses:

Zone Levels:

In Zone Pass Coverage,

Defenders drop to form
two (2) rows of Defenders
across the field at
separate depths. They
create 3 levels of space:
Deep (behind 2nd row),
Intermediate (between
the two rows), and
Underneath (in front of 1st
row).

Zone Seams:

In Zone Pass Coverage,

When Defenders drop to
their zones there is a gap
between defenders
known as a SEAM.
These Seams extend up-
field and become
narrower the further up-
field (i.e. the Defender
has more time to close
the gap the farther from
the Launch Point).

EAGLES 186
Concepts to Manipulate Zone Coverage:
PUSH-HOLD The purpose of this concept
is to horizontally separate Coverage
Defenders.
PUSH is the term for a Receiver taking a
Coverage Defender as deep as he can in
short time.
HOLD is the opposite term; a Receiver
influences a Coverage Defender to
defend at front of his Zone Coverage
holding the Coverage Defenders drop.

The combination of these two routes

creates a large window of open space in
the Intermediate Zone Level for us to run
a third route into (see example).

SQUEEZE-STRETCH The purpose of this

concept is to vertically separate Coverage
Defenders.

SQUEEZE is the term for a Receiver taking

a Coverage Defender towards the inside
edge of his zone (i.e. middle of the filed)

STRETCH is the opposite term: a Receiver

influences a Coverage Defender to the
outside edge of his zone (i.e. towards the
sideline).

The combination of these two routes

creates a window of open space in the
Seam between two Coverage Defenders.
Receivers must understand that each route manipulates the Defensive Coverage so they
must accelerate to the designated Level or Seam as quickly as possible.

Receivers will be expected to know the purpose of any route they are running!

EAGLES 187
B) Manipulating Man Coverage
Man coverage is a more difficult coverage to be effective against because each receiver
is specifically covered by a defender. The following should help us get a receiver open
and assist the QB in locating an open receiver:

Early Recognition. This topic was covered earlier (above under Concepts of Passing
Game on Pg 185) but suffice it to say it is vital to recognize Man coverage! Work on
reading your keys and communicate your reads to your teammates.

When Man coverage is recognized we can expect that the Defense is sending extra
rushers (as many as two) at our Launch Point therefore we need to read the extra
rushers and respond quickly (i.e. Hot routes; adjust launch point; adjust blocking
scheme).

Exploit Mismatches. The topic was covered earlier (above under Freebies specifically
ISO calls on Pg 110) but is the quickest way to have Defensive Coverage revert to
Zone. When a mismatch is recognized we will utilize the ISO call!

Maneuver to Get Open. This topic deals with a Receivers ability to maneuver the
Defender into a position where he has difficulty reacting to the Receivers break or
difficulty reaching the Reception Point (RP).
Receivers must attack the Defender and attempt to move them away from the RP
(while positioning himself to be closer) to force the Defender to cover more ground
(see #5 Integration of Launch Point and Reception Point below for more detail). Most
of these tactics are done during the Release, Stem and Stick phases of a route (see
#6 Route Mechanics below for more detail).

TACTICS TO BE USED BY RECEIVERS:

- During Release and Stem phases, work a heads-up position. This will allow you to
threaten an inside break or outside break.
- During Release and Stem phases, force Defender away from RP if attempts to
maintain leverage opposite your intended break.
- During Stem and Stick phases, force Defender out of his back-pedal (preferably away
from RP) by rapidly closing the gap between you two. If your Stem is sufficiently
deep enough to break to RP when his hips open then break quickly and accelerate to
RP. If your Stem is not deep enough then stay close to Defender (who is now
running) and at time of Stick give him a fake away from RP or give him a body bump
and box him from reaching RP before you (i.e. put him in trail position).

EAGLES 188
- During Stick phase, use various fakes (i.e. stutter steps; head & shoulder moves) to
disrupt the Defenders focus or footwork.
- During Break phase, cut hard and accelerate away from Defender and towards the
RP. Put the Defender in trail position by boxing him from reaching the RP before
you. Signal and communicate to QB your direction and commitment to reaching RP
ahead of the Defender.

Adjust Route if Covered. This topic deals with an extended play as a result of
exceptional Man coverage. The key here is for the Receiver to NOT stay covered.
Continue to work to get open (see #7 Scramble Situations below for more details).

5) Integration of Launch Point, Reception Point and Trajectory of Pass

This integration was introduced in Elements of Successful Passing Plays (see Pg 184
above) and deals with the concept of route timing which utilizes the scientific facts:
Distance is Time and Time is Distance. We will expand upon this more here.

Definitions
Launch Point (LP): is the spot on the field from where the ball is thrown.
Reception Point (RP): is the spot on the field where the ball is caught.
Trajectory of Pass (PASS): is the angle and velocity of the thrown ball which directly affects
timing. Below are examples and explanations of trajectories:

HIGH A high trajectory takes the longest

time to reach the RP.
This pass is considered a touch pass
and is used for passes to
Level 3
QB REC
MEDIUM A medium trajectory reaches the RP
quickly
This pass is used for passes to Level 2
or outside routes in Level 1
QB REC
FLAT A flat trajectory reaches the RP very
quickly.

QB REC This pass is used for passes to inside

routes in Level 1

EAGLES 189
The integration of RP to LP and PASS is critical to the success of our pass plays. This
integration is all about timing of the pass route. Timing is directly linked to distance
travelled by the QB and the REC and the time for the thrown ball to reach the RP.

For example: a 3-step drop by the QB (LP) who throws the ball on a flat trajectory (PASS)
means the REC must reach the RP on his 4th step (accounting for the travel time of the ball).

We will measure the distances travelled by QB or REC in steps taken. QB steps taken are
outlined by the Passing Series (i.e. 90 Series = 3 steps). REC steps taken will be covered in
greater detail under Route Tree in the description of each Passing Series below)

In conclusion, integration of Launch Point, Reception Point and Trajectory of Pass means:

The time it takes for the QB to get set to throw the ball (LP)

+ the time it takes for the thrown ball to reach the REC (PASS)
= the time a REC has to reach the point of the catch (RP)
The integration required to maximize the correct timing or our pass routes will be the
subject of much focused practice time!

6) Route Mechanics
Each pass route consists of several distinct but integrated phases:
Stance/Motion, Release (off LOS), Stem, Stick, Break, Reception and
Yards After Catch (see diagram to right). The timing and executing of
each phase of a specific route is connected to the success of the overall
Pass Play. Each receiver is responsible for practicing and mastering the
running of the full route by understanding the phases and how each
leads to a successfully executed pass route. What follows is a
breakdown of each phase
a) Stance/Motion. When in your stance you must have the proper foot up on the LOS (as
determined by the length of your Stem) or measure your motion toward the LOS so that
the proper foot is on the LOS when you cross it.
While standing at (or motioning toward) the LOS you should be reading the Defensive
Coverage.

b) Release. This is where you can begin to gain leverage on the Defender (putting the
Defender on the good side -> you want to be closer to RP than the Defender).
You may have to fight Defenders Press techniques.
You must explode off the LOS!

EAGLES 190
c) Stem. This is the part of the route where you achieve your required depth (as measured
by steps taken) through rapid acceleration.
Continue to read Defensive Coverage. Continue to gain leverage.
Close the gap on the Defender (i.e force him out of his backpedal if Man Coverage).

d) Stick (this includes applying fakes if Man Coverage). This is the come under control part
of the route by beginning to decelerate.
Continue to gain good side leverage. Put the Defender in a trail position.

e) Break. This is the part of the route where you plant your foot, snap your head around
to see LP (or ball in flight) and accelerate towards the reception area. Read the RP (i.e. in
Man Coverage that means keep Defender in trail position; in Zone Coverage find the
space between Defenders and settle). Adjust to the flight of the ball and get to the
specific RP.

f) Reception. This is the part of the route where you catch the ball.
Put your body in a position to protect the RP from the Defender.
Snatch the ball out of the air (extend hands to reach for ball; go vertical if ball is in air)
Tuck the ball quickly and firmly (protect the ball from collision and/or strip attempts).

g) Yards after Catch. This is the part of the route after you have caught the ball.
Knife upfield. Fight through the tackle.
If you are not the REC than find someone to screen from pursuit towards the REC.

7) Scramble Situations
If the QB is flushed out of the pocket on any of our 70-series pass plays he is expected to
Scramble to try and gain time, yardage and make a play. In order to systematically
support the QB we will adopt the following adjustments to our called routes.

Receivers running inside routes (i.e. 1, 3 or 5) will stop their route and begin to slide along
the same depth to the sideline. If Man Coverage you must accelerate to get distance from
your Coverage Defender. If Zone Coverage you must look for a window between Coverage
Defenders and sit there.

Receivers running routes to the outside (i.e. 2 or 4) will continue to the sideline and sit.
Gain eye contact with QB and indicate your next move (whether into the field, up the field
or towards QB). If Man Coverage you must accelerate to get distance from your Coverage

EAGLES 191
Defender. If Zone Coverage you must look for a window between Coverage Defenders and
sit there.

Receivers running deep routes (i.e. 8, 9 or 0) will stop the route and come back towards the
QB. If Man Coverage you must accelerate to get distance from your Coverage Defender. If
Zone Coverage you must look for a window between Coverage Defenders and sit there.

Receivers running hook/curl or comeback routes (i.e. 6 or 7) will stop the route and break
back up-field. Assume at this point you are in Man Coverage therefore you must accelerate
to get distance from your Coverage Defender and into an open space.

Inside Routes Adjustments Outside Routes Adjustments

Deep Routes Adjustments Hook / Curl Route Adjustments

When making your route adjustment never follow a teammate. If you are at the same level
and following a teammate angle your route up-field to get greater depth (7-10 yds). This
will help gain the stretch of the Defensive Coverage which leads to open Receivers.

If the QB decides to run, turn and Attack Block the first Defender near you. All downfield
blocking must be at the front numbers!

EAGLES 192
70/71 PASSING SERIES
Our 70/71 Series is designed to attack Intermediate (Level 2) Zones of the Defensive Coverage.

The QB will be establishing a Launch Point (LP) at 7 yds depth behind the Centre. The ball is to
be thrown in 4.2 4.8 seconds. In most cases the ball will be thrown on a Middle Trajectory.

Our Pass Protection will be a 5 + 2 scheme utilizing the five Linemen and two Backs thus
allowing us to account for 7 Rushers. Our goal is to provide 5+ seconds of pocket protection.

Attacking the Intermediate Zones will be accomplished by executing three complementary

routes to the Play-side. There will be one Backside route. Receivers are expected to be open at
the Reception Point (RP) in 4.6 5.0 seconds.

The Launch Point (LP) and Reception Point (RP) and Blocking Scheme are integrated in timing
and limit the Defense from defending against our attack.

QB DROP IN 70/71 SERIES

The QB will establish a proper LP through his drop. When the QB is under Centre he will take a
5-step cross-over drop. When the QB is in Shot Gun he will take a 1-step pivot drop. The
illustrations below show proper footwork (starting with a heel pivot, a combination of Lead
Steps and Cross-over Steps and ending with the Break and Gather Step) for achieving the
depth in the most efficient manner.

Drop from Under Centre Drop from Shotgun Set

EAGLES 193
PASS PROTECTION IN THE 70/71 SERIES
In our 70/71 Series Pass Protection we will be using a Big-on-Big approach. This allows for size
match-ups. Our Lineman will account for the Defensive Linemen. The Centre will be responsible
for 0 regardless of his alignment (i.e. Nose Tackle or Middle Linebacker). Our Offensive Line
will utilize Step Back blocking.

Step Back Block Technique:

The following six Coaching Points introduce our technique:

Great Knowledge of Your Opponent

Know his base pass rush technique (and how you will stop it).
Know his escape or counter move(s) (and how you will stop it).

Great Positioning by Footwork!

On snap of ball, Shuffle to inside leverage on your man (Centre will take Play-side of 0)
Drop outside foot to put yourself in a staggered base
Shuffle slide (keep good base for blocking).
When Uncovered: drop quick and scan for free Rusher.
Great Posture (knees/chin/hands)!
Chin in; Shoulders back; Hands up
Keep shoulders and hips parallel to LOS until depth of 5-6 yards.
Great Contact!
Be patient! Strike-Recover!
Prepare to hand-fight.
Give ground slowly and grudgingly.
Great Follow-through!
Maintain inside leverage.
To prevent an inside move (i.e. Spin Technique) by Rusher, break parallel at 5-6 yards
deep and push Rusher away from LP.
Great Finish
When QB throws the ball sprint to the ball to support the Receiver (or defend against an
interception). This also gets you to LOS for next play quickly if we are in our Open
Huddle or Rocket Tempo.

Our Backs will utilize Check-Release blocking and account for the Linebacker or EMLOS to his
side. If the Linebacker or EMLOS drops into a Zone Coverage the Back can: 1) release into the
pattern; 2) Chip block to support a Lineman then release into the pattern; or, 3) Double Team
block to support a Lineman. This will be a Game Plan decision!
Note: If the play-side Back enters the Pass Pattern then the backside Back will take play-side
Back block responsibility and the backside Slotback will take backside Back block responsibility.

EAGLES 194
General Rules for Identifying Blocking Assignment
To assure our seven (7) pass blockers are matching up with the correct men the Linebackers
(i.e. those being blocked by our Backs) will be identified by a call at the LOS! This identification
call must be made on every play (passing or running) so as to not tip our Play selection.

Versus 30, 40, 60 fronts

C=> 0; G=>1 T=>2 B=>3

Versus 50, Eagle fronts

C=> 0; G/T/B=>match up so B takes the LB; G & T take DLs

If we end up facing fewer than seven Rushers we will provide extra support from those not
engaged in the blocking. The support will be to the either 1) double up on backside; or, 2)
double on the strongest Rusher. This will be a Game Plan decision.

Dealing with Stunts / Twists

When a Defense attempts to use Stunts or Twists as part of their Pass Rush we have to be prepared.

The first step is of course Recognition of the attempt. This is

accomplished by studying our opponent.
Once we understand the attempted Rush tactics we must prepare a
response. The tactic we will apply is to Close shoulders and
maintain a solid wall from T T (with the Backs supporting the
outside gap).
Close Shoulders Pass Block
This tactic requires Patience!
Do not go-get the Pass Rusher; let him come to you!

EAGLES 195
Controlling an 8th Rusher (i.e. a Free Rusher)
The first step in controlling a Free Rusher is to identify that the Defense is in an 8-man Front
(i.e. there are 8 defenders in the Tackle Box).
Note: When this happens the Defense is likely in Man Coverage with no support (i.e. only 4
Coverage Defenders to cover our 4 quick Receivers)!

Next, we must adjust our blocking scheme so as to have 4 players take potential Back-side Rush
(i.e. C, G, T, B) which automatically puts Free Rusher to our Front side (i.e only G, T, B available
to account for 4 Rushers). The QB is now in a position to read the front side Rush.

Responses:
1) HOT route: QB will see both front side LBs (the widest of whom is not accounted for)
=> if both come throw Hot; if one drops there is not an extra, unaccounted for Rusher.

Receivers must read rush and if it is Hot they must break quickly to open space versus
the Defender covering them. Note: If the PS Back is the 3rd Receiver into our Pattern he
is likely not covered!

2) Bring a REC in to Block (i.e. 3rd REC to playside). This will be either the Released Back or
the Motioned Slotback.

Released Back takes PS4 Backside Slotback takes PS4

Note: It would be advantageous to automatically assign the Back as 3 rd Playside Receiver when
Defense shows an 8-man Front as the Defensive Coverage will be accounting for the Backside
Slotback which means the Back should be open on any Hot routes!

EAGLES 196
PASS ROUTE TREE FOR THE 70/71 SERIES
The Pass Routes run in this series of Plays requires the Receiver to time their arrival in the
Reception Area with the expected arrival of the pass therefore the distances will be adhered to!

Each route has a name and a corresponding number to identify it. Even numbered routes are
run to the sidelines; Odd numbered routes are run inside towards middle of formation.

EAGLES 197
Outside Routes:
DELAY FLAT ROUTE (12)
Release directly inside. Stem 5-6 steps (sell Drag Route). Stop and pivot facing QB. Accelerate
towards Sideline.
Versus Man Coverage: Sell Drag Route. Accelerate to sideline.
Versus Zone Coverage: Accelerate to sideline Seam.

Release up- eld. Stem 7-8 steps (depth of 10-12 yards). Break at an 45 to outside and
accelerate up-field. Prepare to catch ball over outside shoulder.
Versus Man Coverage: Get separation from Defender by using fakes and taking a steep angle.
Run away from Defender.
Versus Zone Coverage: Run outside Defender in to Sideline Seam.

OPTION ROUTE (Not Illustrated)

Used by BS Receiver when isolated in Man Coverage.
Release up-field just inside Field Numbers. Accelerate for 7-8 steps (depth of 10-12 yards).
Respond to Defenders coverage.
If Defender has 5+ yards of cushion on you then break under him (i.e. Comeback or Hook/In
Routes depending on his leverage).
If Defenders cushion has been broken then give fake and accelerate into a Skinny Post Route.

EAGLES 198
Deep Routes:
GO ROUTE (0) Take-off Route run by Inside Receivers
Release up-field just inside Hash-marks. Accelerate to goal line. Prepare to catch ball over open
shoulder.
Versus Man Coverage: Release at Defenders inside shoulder. Run pass Defender. If Defender
maintains cushion by 10 yards then give a fake (i.e. stutter step or inside or outside move) to
get Defender to break down.
Versus Zone Coverage: Run between Defenders in to Deep Seam.

FADE ROUTE (0) Take-off Route run by Outside Receivers

Release up-field and to Sideline. Maintain a 7 yd buffer to sideline. Accelerate to goal line.
Prepare to catch ball over outside shoulder on sideline.
Versus Man Coverage: Release directly at Defenders outside shoulder. Run pass Defender. If
Defender maintains cushion by 10 yards then give a fake (i.e. stutter step or inside move) to get
Defender to break down.
Versus Zone Coverage: Accelerate up-field and get to within 1-2 yd of sideline (in Deep Sideline
Seam).

Inside Routes:
DRAG ROUTE (1)
Release directly inside. Get to depth of 4-5 yds.
Versus Man Coverage: Run away from Defender across Formation.
Versus Zone Coverage: Get to Formation and find open seam to sit in.

DELAY DRAG ROUTE (3)

Release at angle to outside. Stem 5-6 steps (sell Flat Route). Stop and pivot facing QB. Accelerate
towards Formation.
Versus Man Coverage: Sell Flat Route. Run away from Defender across Formation.
Versus Zone Coverage: Get to Formation and find open seam to sit in.

IN ROUTE (5)
Release up- eld. Stem 7-8 steps (depth of 10-12 yards). Break at 90 and accelerate towards
middle of formation.
Versus Man Coverage: Run away from Defender across Formation.
Versus Zone Coverage: Get to Formation and find open seam to sit in.

HOOK ROUTE (7)

Release up- eld. Stem 7-8 steps (depth of 10-12 yards). Take angle at 45 for 2-3 steps. Break
back to QB take 2-3 steps.
Versus Man Coverage: Run away from Defender towards QB.
Versus Zone Coverage: Find open seam to sit in.

EAGLES 199
POST ROUTE (9)
Release up-field. Stem 7-8 steps (depth of 10-12 yards). Break at an angle to inside and
accelerate upfield.
Versus Man Coverage: Get separation from Defender by using fakes and taking a steep angle.
Run away from Defender.
Versus Zone Coverage: Run between Defenders into Seams.

Back Release Routes:

Our Blocking Schemes provides for 2 Backs to Check and Release Block on Linebackers or
EMLOS. If their assigned block takes on Man Coverage or drops into Zone Coverage the
following are the Routes to be used by the Back upon his release.

ARROW ROUTE (versus Man Coverage)

If LB (EMLOS) engages you in Spy (Man) Technique the Back will execute an
Arrow Route.

Release from Block mode and attack the outside shoulder of the Defender.
Gain depth of 2-3 yds up-field.

If the Defender still has outside leverage on you stop and pivot towards QB
and accelerate towards Formation. Prepare to catch ball at chest level. If the
Defender is behind you (or at your shoulders) accelerate to the sideline.
Prepare to catch ball over shoulder.

SWING ROUTE (versus Zone Coverage)

If the LB (EMLOS) drops into a Zone Coverage the Back will execute a
Swing Route.

Release from Block mode to a drop and circle Stem. Gain depth of 3-4 yds
deeper than the LP and to width of the Numbers. Accelerate towards LOS.
Prepare to catch ball at shoulder height.

70/71 SERIES PATTERNS

70/71 BUNCH SERIES
Using our 70/71 Series QB Drops and Pass Protection we can use our Bunch Formation and
create a Series of Plays that will cause the Defense a number of problems.

The overloaded Formation demands the Defense adjust their coverage which may provide us a
number of options for successful plays. For example if the Coverage rotates to the playside our
backside Receiver will be in a 1 on 1 situation. If the Coverage does not rotate we outnumber
them on the playside.

What follows are a few Bunch Series plays to provide examples of how we can attack a Defense.

EAGLES 208
80/81 PASSING SERIES
Our 80/81 Series is designed to attack Intermediate and Deep (Levels 2 & 3) Zones of the
Defensive Coverage.

The QB will be establishing a Launch Point (LP) at 7 yds depth behind the Tackle with the
distinct option of running if the open read is not there upon set up. The ball is to be thrown in
4.5 5.0 seconds. In most cases the ball will be thrown on a Middle or High Trajectory.

Our Pass Protection will be a 5 + 2 scheme where we will be double-teaming the EMLOS on
Play-side and leaving EMLOS on Backside unblocked (if he pursues too hard we will Backdoor
Screen him). Our goal is to provide 5+ seconds of outside our Tackle pocket protection.

Attacking the Intermediate and Deep Zones will be accomplished by executing three
complementary routes to the Play-side. There will be one Backside route. Receivers are
expected to be open at the Reception Point (RP) in 4.6 5.0 seconds.

QB DROP IN 80/81 SERIES

The QB will establish a proper LP through his drop. When the QB is under Centre he will take a
9-step cross-over drop on an angle to PS Tackle. When the QB is in Shot Gun he will take a 5-
step open pivot drop. The illustration below shows proper footwork (starting with a heel pivot,
a combination of Lead and Cross-over Steps and ending with Break and Gather Steps) to
allow QB to reach LP in the most efficient manner and still allow for a quick take-off up-field.

EAGLES - 209
PASS PROTECTION IN THE 80/81 SERIES

In our 80/81 Series Pass Protection we will be securing the Play-side perimeter and allowing no
play-side penetration. We will accomplish this by double-teaming the Play-side EMLOS with the
Play-side Tackle and a Back. The protection is fairly aggressive on the play-side (think of it as
Run Blocking) and if executed properly our QB should be able to run a sweep on every play. We
will be utilizing a combination of Reach & Turn Back(on Front-side) and Step Back (on Back-
side) blocking techniques.

Reach & Turnback Block Technique:

Great Positioning by Footwork!
On snap of ball, pull 2-3 steps to get to Rushers play-side hip.
Reduce Rushers penetration by establishing contact immediately.
Use fast-feet to rotate hips to play-side.
Great Posture (knees/chin/hands)!
Chin in; Shoulders back; Hands up
Keep shoulders and hips parallel to LOS.
Great Contact!
Place inside shoulder into Rushers chest. Put your head on play-side
Prepare to hand-fight.
Give ground slowly and grudgingly.
Great Follow-through!
Maintain play-side leverage.

PASS ROUTE TREE FOR THE 80/81 SERIES
The Pass Routes run in the 80/81 Series are similar to the 70/71 Series with the following
additional Routes.
DRAG n GO (10)
Release directly inside. Stem
5-6 steps (get to depth of 5-6
yds) and sell Drag Route. Turn
up-field on a Go Route.
Versus Man Coverage: Run away
from Defender to inside and
make sharp cut up-field. If
Defender still has a deep
cushion by 12 yds then give a
fake to get Defender to break
down and run by him.
Versus Zone Coverage: On
turning up-field look for Deep
Seam between Defenders
(influence 00).

DRAG n CORNER (18)

Release directly inside. Stem
5-6 steps (get to depth of 4-5
yds) and sell Drag Route. Break
at 90 (up-field and towards
sideline) and accelerate into a Corner Route. Prepare to catch ball over outside shoulder.
Versus Man Coverage: Get separation from Defender by using fakes and taking a steeper angle.
Run away from Defender.
Versus Zone Coverage: Run to Sideline Seam.

POST CORNER (98)

Release up- eld. Stem 7-8 steps (get to depth of 10-12 yds). Break at a 45 angle to inside for 5
steps (about 6-7 yds) and sell Post Route. Break at 90 angle back towards outside and
accelerate up-field and towards sideline. Prepare to catch ball over outside shoulder.
Versus Man Coverage: Get separation from Defender by selling the Post Route. Take a steeper
angle on Corner. Run away from Defender.
Versus Zone Coverage: Run to Sideline Seam.

90/91 PASSING SERIES
Our 90/91 Series is designed to attack gaps in the 1st Level of the Defensive Coverage.

The QB will be establishing a Launch Point (LP) at 2-steps behind the Centre. The ball is to be
thrown in 2.0 2.3 seconds. In most cases the ball will be thrown on a Flat Trajectory.

Our Pass Protection will be a 5 + 2 scheme utilizing five Linemen and two Backs. Our goal is to
provide 3+ seconds of protection and to keep Defenders hands down.

Attacking the gaps in Level 1 (Underneath Zones) will be accomplished by executing three
complementary routes to the Play-side. There will be one Backside route. Receivers are
expected to be open at the Reception Point (RP) in less than 3.0 seconds.

QB DROP IN 90/91 SERIES

The QB is under Centre for every 90/91 play. The QB will establish a quick LP through his
2-step drop.

The illustration below shows proper footwork (starting with a heel pivot, a Lead Step and
ending with a Gather Step) to allow QB to reach LP in the most efficient manner.

Drop Throw to Right (90) Drop Throw to Left (91)

EAGLES - 217
PASS PROTECTION IN THE 90/91 SERIES
In our 90/91 Series Pass Protection we will be allowing no penetration and bringing the
Defenders hands down so the QB can throw a Flat Trajectory Pass immediately. The protection
is fairly aggressive! We will be utilizing Golo blocking technique.

Golo Block Technique:

Great Positioning by Footwork!
On snap of ball, step to Rushers outside thigh.
Use fast-feet to drive into Rusher on all-fours.
Great Contact!
Place inside shoulder into Rushers outside thigh.
Reduce Rushers penetration by establishing contact immediately.
Bring Rushers hands down by driving your hands into ground (keeping shoulder on
thigh) behind the Rusher.
