1.

Scope
1.1. This procedure covers the external surface preparation and painting for
modification work for Petronas Gas Berhad

2. Reference
2.1 PTS 30.48.00.31-P: Protective Coating and Lining

3. Surface Preparation
3.1. Blasting operation shall be done with garnet (Garnet size: G30-60) to require
surface profile range (50 -75 m) and standard complying with ISO 8501-1:1988 SA
2.5 before applying any coating.
3.2. All blasting abrasives shall contain chloride not more than 150 S/cm as per ASTM
D4940
3.3. Blast cleaned surfaces shall be coated with the primer specified within four hours
after blasting or within such other time limits as may be specified and before any
visible rusting occurs.
3.4. Prior to blasting flux, slag, spatters etc. shall be removed from the welds.
3.5. When humidity is greater than 90% or temperature is lower than 3 C above dew
point, blasting shall not be carried out.

4. Hand and Power Tool Cleaning


4.1. The most technically effective surface preparation method is dry blast cleaning.
Manual preparation shall only be used when blast cleaning is either not feasible or
not strictly required, e.g. galvanised steel, stainless steel.
4.2. Manual cleaning shall be performed using hand wire brushes or mechanically
operated tools (grinders, chippers or wire brushes) in accordance with ISO 8504-3.
The surface shall be left roughly abraded to meet the requirement of SSPC-SP11
and a burnished surface shall be avoided.
4.3. Where welds occur within these areas or when these areas cannot accommodate
a power disc, power impact tools shall be applied (vibratory and rotary hammers,
needle guns, chisels) followed by brush cleaning.
4.4. If the surface being prepared lies adjacent to a coated surface that is not to be
refurbished, the power tool cleaning shall overlap the coated surface by at least 25
mm. The minimum requirement for successful coating application is St 3 at the
time of coating.
4.5. Care shall be taken to ensure that the substrate surface does not become polished
during power tool cleaning.

5. Painting
5.1. Paint shall be applied in accordance with paint manufacturer specification.
5.2. All blasted surface shall be primed within the same day. Recoat intervals for
individual coats that comprise the multicoated system shall be governed by
manufacturers guideline. All coated surfaces shall be washed and sanded down
lightly prior to application of successive coat unless successive applications are
made on the same day to an uncontaminated surface.
5.3. Storing, straining, thinning and drying between coats shall be in strict accordance
with the paint manufacturers recommendations for the dry film thickness
specified.
5.4. Coating manufacturers recommendation or specified shelf life and pot life shall
not be exceeded.
5.5. Edges of all flanges, intersperses of flange and others discontinuities shall be
coated (strip coat) followed by full application of the prime coat.
5.6. Coating shall be applied by brush application on all area that cannot be properly
spray-coated. Brushed shall be of a style and quality that will enable the proper
application of materials. Paints shall be worked into all crevices and corners. Slag
shall be brushed out to eliminate air pockets, solvent bubbles and void.
5.7. Prior to the application of any coat of material, all damages to previous coats shall
be touched up.
5.8. Each coating shall be applied in one even coat, within the dry film thickness range
to avoid drips, runs, holidays, fish eyes, over spray or preceding coat.
5.9. Dry film thickness shall be checked after painting. Coating found to be less than
specified dry film thickness shall be built higher with the same type of coating.
5.10. Coating found to have holidays (void of coating) shall be rejected. Such area shall
be repaired by spot blasting and re-spraying or brushed dabbing but shall not
exceed the specified dry film thickness.
5.11. Coating shall be reapplied if inspection reveals:
I. Surface has not been properly blasted
II. Loose or scaling paints remains
III. Foreign matter is present on the surface
IV. The surface is wet from rain, high humidity or low dew points
V. Previously applied coating has not cured
5.12. Painting shall not be carried out if humidity is greater than 85% or temperature
lower than 3 C above dew point.
5.13. Surface to be coated shall be rendered dust free using ISO 8502-3 prior to the
application of each coat with acceptable criteria shall be maximum quality and size
rating 2.

6. Painting Repair
6.1. Repair of painting shall be done by spot blasting and re-spraying or brushed with
primer and build up with the approved painting system.
6.2. After completion of the repair, dry film thickness and visual inspection will be
carried out by QC personnel.

7. Test/Inspection
7.1. Visual Inspection shall be carried out on each individual coat and completed
coating system listing the appearance of the coating. The coating shall be free of
run pinholes, cracking, blistering, sagging, crater, dry spray and over spray.
7.2. Surface profile height shall be spot checked and documented using an approved
surface profile gauge (e.g. Elcometer 123)
7.3. Film thickness measurement for both wet film thickness and dry film thickness
shall be conducted during all coating application sequences (i.e. individual coats
and specified total dry film thickness). WFT and DFT measurement shall comply
with ASTM D4414 and SSPC-PA2, respectively.
7.4. Adhesion Test shall be performed in accordance with ISO 4624 Standard test
method for pull-off strength of coating using potable adhesion tester for coating
total DFT above 200 microns and shall be conducted for the primer coat and all
subsequent coats; to check for inter-coat bonding. Adhesion test on final coat for
completed coating system shall be determined using the method described in ISO
4624. The recommended minimum pull-off value for glassflake coating is 7 MPa
and all other coating systems, shall be minimum 5 MPa.
7.5. For coating DFT less than 200 microns (mainly reference to single pack coatings),
power tool cleaned surface (maintenance system) galvanised steel, aluminium &
stainless steel, the cross-cut technique, and the use of pressure sensitive adhesive
tapes to the cut surface shall be used. The crosscut test shall be carried in
accordance to ISO 2409 standard test method for measuring adhesion by tape test.

BARRIER

Product description
Barrier is a two-pack zinc rich epoxy primer with a high content of zinc that complies with the
compositional requirements for SSPC Paint 20 level 2 and ISO 12944. Can also be made to order
with ASTM D520 Type II zinc dust.

Recommended use
As a zinc rich primer on blast cleaned steel. Barrier is used in combination with advanced coating
systems to further improve protection against corrosion.

Surface preparation
All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from contamination. The surface should be assessed and
treated in accordance with ISO 8504.

Bare steel
Cleanliness: Blast cleaning to min. Sa 2 (ISO 8501-1:1988) or for maintenance UHPWJ to WJ2
(NACE No.5/SSPC-SP 12). Roughness: using abrasives suitable to achieve minimum grade Fine (ISO
8503-2).

Shopprimed steel
Clean, dry and undamaged approved shopprimer.

Other surfaces
The coating may be used on other substrates. Please contact your local Jotun office for more
information.

Condition during application


The temperature of the substrate should be minimum 5C and at least 3C above the dew point of
the air, temperature and relative humidity measured in the vicinity of the substrate. Good ventilation
is required in confined areas to ensure correct drying.

Brush Recommended for stripe coating and small areas, care must be taken to achieve the
specified dry film thickness.

Storage
The product must be stored in accordance with national regulations. Storage conditions are to keep
the containers in a dry, cool, well ventilated space and away from source of heat and ignition.
Containers must be kept tightly closed.

Handling
Handle with care. Stir well before use. Continuous stirring during application will prevent the heavy
zinc pigment from settling.

Packing size
4 litre unit: 3 litres Comp. A (base) in a 5 litre container and 1 litre Comp. B (curing agent) in a 1 litre
container.

9 litre unit: 6.75 litres Comp. A (base) in a 10 litre container and 2.25 l Comp. B (curing agent) in a 3
litre container.

Packing may vary from country to country according to local requirements.

Product description
Jotamastic 87 is a two-pack surface tolerant, abrasion resistant, high solids epoxy mastic coating
which may be applied in high film thickness. Available with different hardeners for varying substrate
temperatures, Standard (Std) and Cold Climate (CC)/Wintergrade (WG). This product is a part of a
complete system which is certified not to spread flames.

Recommended use
Steel where blast cleaning may not be possible and on hydrojetted surfaces still being moist where
gloss and colour retention is of minor importance. Can be used alone or in combination with various
systems of primers and topcoats. Gives excellent corrosion protection both in salt and fresh water. If
exposed to sunlight chalking may occur.

Surface preparation
All surfaces should be clean and free from contamination. The surface should be assessed and
treated in accordance with ISO 8504.

Bare steel
Cleanliness: Power tool cleaning to min. St 2, mill scale free (ISO 8501-1:1988). Improved surface
treatment (blast cleaning to Sa 2) will improve the performance. In case of hydrojetting the flash
rust degree shall not exceed moderate in SSPC and NACE standards for water prepared surfaces.

Shopprimed steel
Clean, dry and undamaged approved shopprimer.

Coated surfaces
Clean, dry and undamaged compatible primer. Contact your local Jotun office for more information.
For maintenance UHPWJ to WJ2 (NACE No.5/SSPC-SP 12) or Power tool cleaning to min. St 2 for
rusted areas

Condition during application


The temperature of the substrate should be minimum +10C (Std) (-5C in CC/WG) and at least 3C
above the dew point of the air, temperature and relative humidity measured in the vicinity of the
substrate. Good ventilation is required in confined areas to ensure proper drying.

Hydrojetting of steel surface makes a wet surface. The surrounding air must have a relative humidity
not exceeding 85 %. Before painting the surface shall not be glossy with moisture, but can have a
patchy appearance.

Note * The temperature of the mixture of base and curing agent is


recommended to be at least 15C, otherwise extra solvent may be

1. Provided the surface is free from chalking and other contamination prior to application, there is
normally no overcoating time limit. Best intercoat adhesion occurs, however, when the
subsequent coat is applied before preceding coat has cured. If the coating has been exposed to
direct sunlight for some time, special attention must be paid to surface cleaning and
mattening/removal of the surface layer in order to obtain good adhesion.

The product must be stored in accordance with national regulations. Storage conditions are to keep the containers in a
dry, cool, well ventilated space and away from source of heat and ignition. Containers must be kept tightly closed.

Handling
Handle with care. Stir well before use.

Packing size
20 litre unit: 17.1 litres Comp. A (base) in a 20 litre container and 2.9 litre Comp. B (hardener) in a 5 litre container.
5 litre unit: 4.3 litres Comp. A (base) in a 5 litre container and 0.7 litre Comp. B (hardener) in a 1 litre container.
Packing may vary from country to country according to local requirements.

Health and safety


Please observe the precautionary notices displayed on the container. Use under well ventilated conditions. Do not
breathe or inhale mist. Avoid skin contact. Spillage on the skin should immediately be removed with suitable cleanser,
soap and water. Eyes should be well flushed with water and medical attention sought immediately.
