PACKING
Wire ropes are supplied in wooden reels or in bundles. The reels are covered with
suitable hessian cloth and plastic to protect the rope from dust and other material
damages during transit and storage.
Ropes must be stored in reels, duly packed in dry condition free from possible by
corrosive agent like moisture, dust or acidic fumes. If the ropes are to be stored under
warm & humid conditions for long time, it is to be mounted on a horizontal shaft and
turned over periodically. Reusable ropes must be stored in reels as new ropes and
ropes should be re lubricated if it is stored for too long.
HANDLING
Ropes require careful handling to ensure that the lay lengths are not disturbed. The
following method should be used to unreel the rope from the bundle or the reel.
To measure a wire rope we need to place the caliper along the opposite strands of the
rope.
It is important to tightly seize the wire rope with the annealed wire to maintain the
ends of the rope. If it is not done the wires and strands become slack with the
consequent upsetting of uniformity of tensions in the rope. This results in the
overloading of some strands, under loading of others, bird caging and breakage.
