Read Aloud The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lesson

Targeted Age Group: 4 year olds

Lesson Objectives (minimum of 2):


1. Students will be able to identify at least three major events in the story The
Very Hungry Caterpillar by working cooperatively in pairs and acting out the three
major events in the correct order.

2. Students will be able to retell the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by
recreating the story in pairs with figures, which will be provided.

Before Reading
Anticipatory Set:
To begin the lesson, the teacher will ask the students if they have ever seen a
caterpillar. The teacher will ask questions like, How big was the caterpillar? and What
special thing do caterpillars do? The teacher will be looking to see who knows a
caterpillar develops into a butterfly. If students know this, the teacher will ask if they
know how the caterpillar turns into a butterfly. The teacher will ask the students for
predictions.

During Reading
Pg. # Prompt (minimum of 5 ex. question, picture, think aloud, vocabulary, predictions, etc.)
The teacher will ask students to predict what is inside the egg on the leaf.

The teacher will point out that there was a caterpillar in the egg and

The teacher will ask the students why they think the caterpillar had a

The teacher will as the students to predict what is in the picture on this
Pg. 20 page. Then the teacher will read and explain that it is a cocoon, and what a
cocoon is.
The teacher will ask what special event happened to the caterpillar.

Extending activities (2)
1. The teacher will purposefully pair students (scaffolding) and have them work together
to act out three major events from the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Students are
allowed to use props, such as food from the kitchen to help them demonstrate these
events. Every student is expected to participate and will demonstrate to the class their
three major events after being provided time to practice.

2.The teacher will purposefully pair students (scaffolding) and have them work
cooperatively together using figures provided, to retell the story of The Very Hungry
Caterpillar. The teacher will provide a plastic bag to each student containing a little
green pipe cleaner as the caterpillar, pictures of the different foods the caterpillar ate,
an almond (if allowed) as a cocoon or a picture, and a toy butterfly. The teacher will
allow the students to engage in play as they recreate the story individually and together.
After allowing the students some time to play, the teacher will approach each pair and
have them retell the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Assessment of Learning Objectives:


Objective #1- The teacher will asses if students could correctly identify at least three major
events in the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by observing how accurately the pairs perform
their three major events.
Objective #2- The teacher will asses if students could correctly retell the story of The Very
Hungry Caterpillar by observing how accurately the child recreates the story with the figures
provided.

Modifications/Accommodations:
When reading students who need preferential seating will sit wherever is best for them.
For both activities, the teacher will use scaffolding to pair the students. The teacher
will pair struggling students with students who appear to be achieving.
