NLP Neuro Linguistic Programming


Could be described as the art and science of using your mind to achieve specific
and desired results. NLP offers a range of different techniques and tools that can
help you model (watch and learn from) successful people and achieve excellent
results more quickly.
Neuro Is to do with the neurology and how information from our senses is
processed internally. Linguistic is to do with language and how we communicate
experiences to ourselves and others. Programming is to do with the internal
strategies and steps we use to achieve specific results.
NLP also offers principles and techniques that can help you take charge of your
emotional state. NLP offers a range of different techniques to manage your
emotions and internal thought processes so that you can achieve the results you
want.

NLP is both an art and a science. The science deals with how your mind really
works and the art is a set of powerful techniques and principles that you can use
to create whatever mindset, habits or behaviours you want. This makes it a very
powerful form of therapy, as change is often immediate.

In fact, learning NLP can be likened to receiving an unexpected parcel in the post,
years after it was supposed to be delivered. The post date is your date of birth
and its obviously been gathering dust at the post office depot until now. You open
it to find that its rather like a Haynes Manual, but with the title:
Your Mind: Instructions for Use
and suddenly the world begins to unfold before you eyes after a lifetime of not
understanding it.

What is this RAS?


Your RAS is the automatic mechanism inside your brain that brings relevant information to
your attention. Your reticular activating system is like a filter between your conscious mind
and your subconscious mind. It takes instructions from your conscious mind and passes
them on to your subconscious. For example, the instruction might be, "listen out for anyone
saying my name".

There are some interesting points about your reticular activating system that make it an
essential tool for achieving goals.
First, you can deliberately program the reticular activating system by choosing the exact
messages you send from your conscious mind. For example, you can set goals, or say
affirmations, or visualize your goals. Napoleon Hill said that we can achieve any realistic
goal if we keep on thinking of that goal, and stop thinking any negative thoughts about it. Of
course, if we keep thinking that we can't achieve a goal, our subconscious will help us to
not achieve it.
Second, your reticular activating system cannot distinguish between 'real events' and
'synthetic' reality. In other words it tends to believe whatever message you give it. Imagine
that you're going to be giving a speech. You can practice giving that speech by visualizing it
in your mind. This 'pretend' practice should improve your ability to give the speech.

What we need to do is to create a very specific picture of our goal in our conscious mind.
The RAS will then pass this on to our subconscious - which will then help us achieve the
goal. It does this by bringing to our attention all the relevant information which otherwise
might have remained as 'background noise'.

Why Set Goals?


If you dont decide what you want to happen in the future, someone else will!
Youll be at the effect of the world around you rather than causing what happens to you.
You can enlist the help of a module in your mind called your Reticular Activating System,
(RAS) which acts like your 24-7 Goal Achieving Assistant.

How Do You Set Goals?


Decide what you really want and create a picture in your mind of what it will be like when
youve achieved it. What will you see, hear and feel when you have it? Give your RAS a
technicolour description of what you want it to draw you towards.
You will then need to align with your goal. That means finding and removing any limiting
beliefs that sabotage your efforts. I.e. If you believe a venture is doomed to fail, how
many attempts will you make before you give up, having proven yourself right? When you
believe in yourself, you will keep trying until you get there. For example, Colonel Sanders
tried to sell his fried chicken recipe to 1000 restaurants before he got a YES! He believed
he could do it and ignored any evidence to the contrary.

The Point is:


Setting goals can be a powerful process that makes getting what you want almost effortless.
Goals should not be hard work when youve enlisted your subconscious mind in the process.
Ensure that you create a supportive psychology around your real desires and goals, rather than
setting goals based on what you think is more realistic. If you settle, you wont feel the passion
which will help drive you towards your outcome.

THE PROCESS:
1. Decide on the end-step for your goal and the date
2. Close your eyes and get a feel for the future date and step inside the goal.
3. Enhance the experience so that its perfect for you
4. Imagine a Polaroid photograph is being taken of you achieving your goal
5. Step out of the picture and hold the photograph in your hands
6. Label it and write the date on the bottom of the photo as it develops
7. Stand on your timeline, and then rise up above it with the photo in your hands.
8. Notice the past stretches off in one direction, the future in another
9. Breathe 3 deep breaths into your photo to fill it with certainty
10. Zoom into the future along your timeline until youre above the date you set
11. Drop the photo into the timeline below you
12. Look into the future to see the ripples of success in the future due to this
achievement
13. Look back off into the past to see events that are needed to support this
goal, are moving into alignment with it.
14. Knowing its out there, come back to the present along the timeline and back
into the room.

Anchoring

Script to install an anchor:


To install an anchor for each State, do the following closed-eye process with a partner. If youre
reading, take a breath at the end of each sentence so you read it slowly and intensely. You may
have to change some of the wording to suit the states youre anchoring, so have a read through of
this first and change anything you need to.

1. Ask your client What emotional resource would you like to anchor today?
2. This process requires that I touch you on the knuckle. Is that ok? Choose an
empty knuckle to use in the process with your client.
3. Ask your client Can you remember a specific time that you felt totally Xd?
4. Now, elicit that state using the script below and first, just observe the person
going in and out of the state. Observe where the peak of the state is.

Great! Close your eyes and go back to that time now ... go right back to that
time, float down into your body and see what you saw, hear what you heard,
and really feel the feelings of being totally Xd. Breathe how you breathe when
youre totally Xd. Say what you say to yourself when youre totally Xd

5. Have them come back to the room and open their eyes.
6. Break state.
7. Now elicit the state again, (repeat 4). and this time, press them on the knuckle
as they go into state and stop touching their knuckle just before the peak of the
state. (Approx 5-15 seconds).
8. Bring them back to the room and have them open their eyes.
9. Break state.
10. Test the anchor by pressing the same knuckle and observe the physiology. The
client should feel the feelings automatically and immediately.
11. If the response is strong enough. Great! If not, check the ITURN elements of
anchoring and do the process again.

Any emotional state is a result of your current physiology, focus and language.
Each one affects the other. By changing your internal state you affect your
behaviour and vice versa. If youre not in the right state break out of it!

Exercise 1:
Try the mantra: I am the perfect person for the job, I am the perfect person for
the job over and over again and see how it makes you feel.

Exercise 2:
Breathe calmly and control your emotional state with the way that you stand.
Imagine you are a tree with roots growing deep into the ground. Pretend to be
confident and you will create a confident state. Fake it till you make it! Soon you
wont be faking it!

Exercise 3:
Visualise a situation going exactly the way you want it before you go into it. Feel
how that feels and enjoy it! You will set up a positive expectancy in your
subconscious mind.

Exercise 4:
Stand the way you would stand if you were super confident. Walk around and
notice how it feels. Youll notice that your sternum is raised about 1-2 cm higher
than before. Thats it! Now say something positive to yourself and enhance the
experience. For example I am super fantastic or Everyone smiles at me.
