Muscle of Face

By: Pangpun Pim Roong Mind

Facial Muscle Movement
control by cranial nerve VII
and V

If you have problem with facial

symmetry, it might indicated
that your nerve have
problems.
orbital + cularis(muscle) + oculi (eyes)
Orbicularis oculi

Origin: orbital rim, frontal &

maxillary bone

Insertion: lateral region of eye, or

the same point as orgin

It is the muscle around the eyes

Orbicularis oculi

Origin: lower part of the nasal

bone and upper part of the lateral
nasal cartilage.

Insertion: It is inserted into the

skin over the lower part of the
forehead between the two
eyebrows on either side of the
midline, its fibers merging with
those of the Frontalis.
Procerus
Action: frown eyebrows

It is where the transverse wrinkle at the top of nasal radix occured

Nasalis
Nasal - nose
Origin: maxilla (upper jaw) part of the
skull

Inseion: the nasal bone

composed of 2 parts

1. Transverse: arises from the

maxilla and covers the bridge of
the nose.
2. Alar: attached to the greater alar
(nostril) cartilage
Nasalis

Mentalis Mental - relating to the chin

Origin: mandible near the incisive fossa

Insertion: skin that locate near the chin

Action: -raise the lower lip

-pull the skin upward

-chew

Expression: mistrust, or not respect

Buccinator buccal = cheek

2 Origins: Pterygomandibular raphe & Alveolar process of the mandible and

maxilla

Action: chew
Laughter
-This muscle for on your face when you laught.

-zygomatic major & oribicularis oculi

Orbicularis Oris (Origin) oris - mouth

Anterior surface of Maxilla, Mandible, and Modiolus at angle

of mouth
Modiolus
Mandible

Maxilla
Orbicularis Oris (Insertion)
Mucus membrane of margin lips Angle of mouth
Orbicular Oris (Action)

Purses lips Pucker lips edge Narrow orifice of mouth

(mouth line)
levator labii superioris muscle Levator = elevator
Labii = lip
superior = above

Origin Insertion
infraorbital margin of maxilla Gets inserted to the skin of upper lip.
Function

Elevating the upper lip.

levator labii superioris muscle

levator = lift

Levator anguli oris anguli = angle

oris = oral

Origin Insertion
mouth's angle (corner), and it intermingles
Canine Fossa
with the zygomaticus, triangularis, and
orbicularis oris muscles.
Action:

Smile!!!
Muscles of Facial Expression
Auriculares Platysma
Auriculares auriculares - ear

- 3 small muscles around the auricle

- Not well developed in Men
- Movement of ears
Platysma Platy - flat

- Broad
- Thin
- Superficial
- Fascia (connective tissue locating below carvicle)
- Movement of the mouth, the skin of the neck, and the upper
chest
Muscle of Mastication mastication - chew

4 pairs linked to mandible

3 pairs close to the lower jaw
1 pair allow the movement of the jaws, and the side to side movement
Masseter = chewer

Muscle at the cheek bone

Action of the lower jaw
Temporalis named after bone of scalp

Locates at the temporal fossa

Lift the lower jaw
lateral = side Pterygoid = wing-shaped

Lateral Pterygoid
Locates at the sphenoid bone
depresses and protracts the lower jaw
Medial Pterygoid Medial - Middle + Pterygoid - wing-shaped

Locates at sphenoid, palatine, maxilla

Lift the lower jaw, side movement
Bell Palsy
- neurologic disorder: disorder of cranial nerve 7 which control all facial muscle
- blurred vision, hyperacusis
- most common unilateral facial paralysis in the world
Bell Palsy
Treatment

- Steriod
- Antivirus medicine
- Surgery
- Should wearing a glass when
going outside to protect the
eye that cannot be closed

Bell Palsy Cerebro Vascular Accident

Trauma of Face
Muscle lose ability to work and function caused from burn and injury. It involved of
soft tissue injuries and fracture of facial parts.

Treatment: Surgery and medicine

Myasthenia Gravis
Autoimmune disorder which antibodies form against acetylcholine nicotinic
postsynaptic receptors at the neuromuscular junction of skeletal muscles. In other
word, Myasthenia Gravis is the disorder of skeletal muscle which is on your face.
Myasthenia Gravis
Symptoms

- weakness of ocular muscle

- bulbar muscle weakness
(tongue, pharynx, larynx)
Myasthenia Gravis
Treatment

- Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg): This therapy provides your body with

normal antibodies, which alters your immune system response.
- Immunosuppressants: doctor provide a medicine that will alter patient immune
system
Hemifacial Spasm
The symptom is caused from compression of facial nerve called anterior
inferior cerebellar artery however, because this nerves also control eyebrows,
eyes, and lips muscle, it causes a twitching of facial muscle on one side of the
face or Hemifacial Spasm .
Hemifacial Spasm (Treatment)
Medication: Your doctor may prescribe anti-convulsant drugs or Muscle relaxants. These drugs usually
used with mild cases.
Side effects: Drowsiness, Unsteadiness, Nausea, Skin Rash, Dependence
** Patients should take a blood test to ensure the drug level in their body and take a safe amount of drug.

Botox injections: Botulinum toxin, or Botox usually works within three days and lasts for three
months. It can be repeated indefinitely
Side effects: Temporary Facial Weakness, Drooping Eyelid, Eye Irritation and Sensitivity.
Hemifacial Spasm (Treatment)
Surgery: Medications and injections sometimes fail to control spasms or cause side effects.
Microvascular decompression can relieve the nerve compression. A neurosurgeon will make a hole
in the bone (craniotomy) at the back of your head to expose the facial nerve at the brainstem then
put the sponge besides your auditory nerve .
Exercise Scalp Exercise
Step number one : - stand in front of and look at the mirror

-raise up the eyebrows (contract the frontalis muscles)

Step number two: - put your hand at the side of the head

try to pull back your ears (contract the occipitalis muscles)

- small movement

- head will contract easily

-muscle at the back of the head require lots of work

Step number three: - place your fingers over the two muscle slips at the back of the head

Step number four: - try to check contraction when you move the scalp or head
Exercise Occipitalis muscle occipital = back of head

Step 1: Lie on the bed (face the ceiling, and head on a pillow)

Step 2: Pull your ear back (feel the contraction of the muscle)

The pillow acts as a monitor giving you sensory biofeedback. This biofeedback will
eventually enable you to gain complete control of the occipitalis muscles.
Exercise Eye muscle
Step 1: Contract the occipitalis muscles at the back of the head

Step 2: Winking one eye while contrating the ocipitalis.

Step 3: repeat the same thing with another eye.

Step 4: repeat the whole step from the beginning for one more time.

You'll feel the orbicularis oculi muscles working hard as you do this advanced
exercise. This means that they are getting stronger.
Exercise2
This exercise will your mouth, cheek and chin muscle to be stronger.
Exercise 3 Muscles Under Eyes
You doing this exercise by winking your eyes and hold it for a second and then switch side.
This exercise will help to firm orbicularis oculi muscle around your eye and nasalis muscle on
the top of your nose. This exercise will help to make fine line on your face less noticeable.
Please make your face skin moisture before doing any of this exercise. After doing this,
close your both eyes tightly and hold it for 2-3 seconds. After a few weeks of this exercise,
bagginess around upper eyelid and hooded upper eyelid will disappear.
The exercise for the orbicularis
oris, the circular muscle around the
Exercise 4 Muscle Around Mouth mouth.

(Never exercise the facial muscles without lubricating the skin either with
water or oil.)

Pull the mouth with the index fingers getting perhaps a quarter to
three/eight of an inch of movement.
You will hold the contraction of the orbicularis oris muscle for a
second or two.
You will then contract the orbicularis oris even more strongly until
the index fingers get closer together.

*The muscle will maintain a constant length as you hold the contraction.

Recommendation: 25 to 50 repetitions.
Exercise 5 Chin Muscle
Again!! (Never exercise the facial muscles without lubricating the skin either with water or oil.)

1. Elevate the lower lip. This will wrinkle the skin of the chin. If you place your finger firmly on the mentalis muscle you
will feel that it is contracted. Hold this contraction for a second.
2. Strongly lower the chin to the position you see in the photo. Hold this contraction for a second. Do not move the head
though. The head remains stationary throughout the exercise.
3. Recommendation: Do this exercise 10 -12 reps.

While you're doing this exercise, you'll feel the muscles at the front of the neck (the platysma) working hard along with the
chin muscle. Keeping these two muscle groups in good shape is important to ward off the dreaded turkey-neck syndrome
and platysmal banding.
