Unit Paper 3

The big idea for this unit is vulnerability. Eldridge (2012), emphasizes this concept of

holistic integration when covering the concept of vulnerability. With holistic integration, getting

to know your students and making a comfortable environment is crucial with the concept of

vulnerability. This helps with teaching the concept of vulnerability because the more comfortable

your students feel, the more they will be willing to open up and deal with vulnerable aspects in

their art. Every student is different, so it is important to understand their individual needs and

allow them to be vulnerable in a positive manner. Pink (2006), writes about a whole new way of

thinking using six senses: design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. When using

these senses we may feel vulnerable or uncomfortable, but this fosters a deeper level of thinking

and making connections. They help us be more productive and distinguishes us from others

because we become more comfortable with the concept of vulnerability.

For the studio where we were able to combine two images together. I think it is a great

activity, that is fairly simple, because the images are ready do use, which helps students think

creatively. What I would adjust in this activity for my classroom is possibly using the same

programs for editing them. At the school I work at they have I pad media carts so each student

could use an I pad. If this is something that is available, it would be fun to download some of the

photo editing apps that make it easier to change images, and do a lot more with the images

before putting them together. That way everyone is also using the same program so answering

questions and helping with editing may be a lot easier, especially in a larger classroom setting. I

love the idea of an art walk or investigation. It gets the students excited, and fosters individual
thinking, as well as sharing within their group. For my students I would have them walk around,

and jot down their individual notes at that time, and then come all together, and have myself lead

a large group VTS, where they could share what they wrote.
