Interest Approach (Motivation):

Bring in a pile of wool and draw the picture of a sheep carcass.


- Explain to them how the wool provides clothes for everyone.
- Have the students draw and label the sheep carcass.

Indicate were some of the retail cuts are located.

Merino- wool, white face

This sheep breed is bred for their wool. They are known for
their premium quality fine sheep fleece. Many people dont
want their fleece because it is so sensitive to handle. Their
fleece is used for baby clothes, shawls, and warm accessories.

Dorset- wool, white faced, horns

Dorset sheep can be horned or polled. They are medium sized


with a very white, strong, close and free from dark fibers. They
are the number one white faced breed of sheep in the United
States. They are a dual purpose sheep who originate from
England and Spain.

Dorper- white-bodied, black head or white head, hair


and wool
Interest Approach (Motivation):

Dorper originated from South Africa in the 1930s. It is a cross


between the Dorset Horn and the Blackheaded Persian. This
is one of the most fertile sheep that is hornless. Their coat is a
mixture of wool and hair. There are two different types of
Dorpers: the Blackheaded Dorper and the White Dorper. The
Dorper is a hardy sheep and can live in conditions other sheep
cannot.

Hampshire- black-faced, black legs, black ears, wool

The Hampshire breed originated in England. These sheep are


large and stocky. They are known for their excellent meat
production. The lambs are fast growing. They can adjust to
pasture or confinement management.
