Stampede ropes in premier rodeo action
By Mike Stetson
mstetson@idahopress.com
NAMPA — Few, if anyone, involved with the
Rodeo and Buck Show in the early 1900s, probably
envisioned their local bucking horse competition
becoming one of the premier rodeos in the country.
With $400,000 in prize money and more than
700 competitors, the 95th annual Snake River
Stampede has grown up from its humble beginnings
and truly is one of the best rodeos any cowboy or
cowgirl will ride at.
“It’s a big one, it’s one of the biggest rodeos all year,
in the country not just in Idaho, so it’s important,” said
Caldwell bull rider Marcus Michaelis, a 2007 National
Finals Rodeo qualifier who is No. 10 in the world this
season. “Every top guy is going to go to Nampa and
compete, so it’s definitely a great rodeo.”
Making the Snake River Stampede a great
rodeo — not just for the competitors but also for
the fans — has become the goal for the all-volun-
teer rodeo board.
“The whole reason for doing this is to create
great entertainment for the community,” said Roger
Todd, this year’s Snake River Stampede rodeo
board president. IPT file photo
“Everything is built around this community and
trying to put on a great event with good entertain-
ment,” Todd added. “But it’s all about keeping dollars

Stampeders light up the night
By Bryan Dooley

NAMPA — For the 14th year,
Stampede visitors will be thrilled by
the Snake River Stampeders and their
unique and daring drill performance
in the dark.
The team’s brave women don
hundreds of lights each and perform
high-speed choreographed drills with
nothing but skill, practice and hand
signals to guide them.
“They are a premiere riding group
that absolutely adds color to our
Snake River Stampede. There are
so many people that come out just
to see them perform,” former rodeo
president Vern Carpenter has said.
“They are just such an addition to the
Snake River Stampede, it’s hard to
even think of a rodeo without them.
They kick it off each night, they set
the mood, and away we go.”
For 11-time world championship
cowboy Dean Oliver, there’s no com-
petition.
“I think they’re the best drill
team I’ve ever seen at any rodeo in
my entire life,” Oliver said. “It’s just Bottom row, left to right, Katie Wyant, Kathleen Mautz, Jenna Greenwood, Tiffany Arreola, Susie Wyant, and Jaimie Hiskey. Middle row,
