"Maha Shivaratri" is the auspicious night of Lord Shiva, which falls on the fourteenth day of the
waning moon in the Falgun (Phalgun) Feb-March, when the Sun is in the sign of Aquarius, according
to the Hindu almanac. You can convert your negative Karma into your positive energy with the
blessings of Lord Shiva and attain the bliss of Moksha, on this auspicious occasion!
Shiva rathri is one of the most auspicious vratas for the devotees of Lord Shiva. The puranas explain
the grand significance of this vrata.
History of Shivaratri
Once when everything in all the worlds got reduced into Lord Shiva, in that darkness of nothing
present, the mother Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva in the Agamic (In tantra there are two parts Agam
and Nigam) way with great devotion. The Parameshwar pleased by her prayer blessed her. She
asked for the benefit of all the creatures that in future whoever worships the Lord on the Shiva Ratri
day with devotion, they should be blessed and should be given the ultimate liberation. The Pashupati
Nath granted that, showing way for all of us to get blessed easily.
When Brahma and Vishnu fought between themselves as "who is the greatest", Lord Shiva appeared
before them as a pillar of fire (Jyotir Linga). They were not able to find the starting Point and end of
that pillar. This day is MahaShivaRatri.
Then Brahma and Vishnu repented for their mistake and prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiving their sin by
worshiping the Shiva linga which is the form of the flame. In the night of Shiva rathri Lord Shiva
appeared before them and blessed them. Devotees pray to the God throughout the night of Shiva
rathri by performing Abisheka (Pouring Water +Milk), chanting and other holy deeds.
Every month in Krishna paksha chathurdhasi (fourteenth moon day) is called masa Shiva rathri. The
one that comes in the month of Phalgun (mid February to mid March) is called Maha Shiva rathri. This
is considered as the most important vrata by the devotees.
There are many incidents told about the greatness of this day. Once a hunter in a jungle after
searching throughout the jungle was quite tired and could not get any animal. In the nightfall a tiger
started chasing him. To escape from that he climbed a tree. That was a Bilva tree. The tiger sat under
the tree waiting for him to come down. The hunter who sat on a branch of the tree was quite tense
and didn't want to sleep. He was plucking the leaves and putting down as he was not able to be idle.
Below the tree there was a Shiva lingam. The whole night went on like this. God was pleased with the
Upavasa (hunger) and the Puja the hunter and the tiger did even without knowledge. He is the peak
of the grace. He gave the hunter and the tiger "Moksha".
In a Shiva temple on a Maha Shiva rathri day the lamp kept in the altar was very dim. That time a
mouse which came to take its prey touched the flame. Due to the heat it moved its head immediately.
In the process it kindled the lamp and the altar was illuminated well. Lord Shiva, pleased by this deed
made the mouse Mahabali, the renowned asura king.

There are many incidents like this told in our Puranas. If we do the vrata with pure devotion and love
there can be no doubt about getting the Grace of the Almighty.
Skanda Purana describes about four Shiva Ratri. The first one is Nitya Shivaratri (daily Shivaratri -
every night). The second one is the Masa Shivaratri which is observed on the Krishna paksha
chaturdasi (fourteenth moon day on the moons diminishing phase). The third one is the Magha
Pratham Adi Shivaratri which is observed for the thirteen days starting from prathama tithi in the
month Magha and on the chaturdasi night the Lord is worshiped throughout the night.
The fourth one is observed on the Phalgun month Krishna pakhsha chaturdasi. This is the one
observed in a widespread manner. It is also called Maha Shiva Maharatri.
Getting up early in the morning one meditates on the Infinitely Auspicious, ornated with thousands of
splendid garlands, who is in the form of the holy symbol of Shiva (Maha lingam). Bathing and staying
clean the worship of Lord Shiva in the form of Shiva lingam is done in the four jamas of the night (four
equal time intervals of the night). (Note that the linga worship is explicitly mentioned for this vratam as
this is the time the God out of Its grace for the benefit of Pashus appeared in a formless-form that is a
symbol (lingam) from Its true nature of formlessness.)
The conversion of negative Karma into powerful positive energy can be done by devoting yourself in
the feet of Lord Shiva, the remover of sin and the Lord of mercy and compassion. The night is
symbolic of a condition prior to creation and refers to the chaos that existed before light. But this
chaotic darkness is not a negative condition. It is the pure consciousness without the pollution of
wisdom and knowledge.
In the Buddha's terminology, it is referred to as the emptiness of heaven. Lord Shiva governs the
universe with the cycle of creation, sustenance, dissolution, concealment and bestowment of grace.
He protects devotees from evil forces such as lust, greed and anger. He grants boons, bestows grace
and awakens wisdom in His devotees.
Every year during this powerful night, Lord Shiva incarnates in the form of Shiva Lingam
Maha Shivaratri is the prime time for every soul to get into the primordial consciousness of non-
existence or Nirvana. One is required to keep vigil during the night in order to receive Lord Shiva's
grace and blessings.
Lord Shiva incarnates in the form of the Shiva Lingam during his great night on every year. Shiva
Lingam is the holy symbol of Lord Shiva that is considered sacred by the devotees of Lord Shiva. The
power of lingam is the most glorious occurrence created by God in its vast array of creation. Shiva
Lingam is symbolic of the creative power of the universe. It denotes the truth that God does not have
any definite form.

Maha Shivaratri is the day for Spiritual advancement!
It is a great opportunity to connect with the divine formless form of Lord Shiva, the Lingam, who
symbolizes 'all-auspiciousness', and to invite these energies in your life. In essence, Maha Shivaratri
signifies the transition from the darkness of gloom and ignorance to the dawn of divine joy and
knowledge!
Offer this inner worship to Lord Shiva daily: "I worship the jewel of my Self, the Shiva residing in the
Lotus of my heart. I bathe Him with the water of my pure mind brought from the river of faith and
devotion. I worship Him with the fragrant flowers of Samadhi-all this so that I may not be born again in
this world."
Here is another formula for the supreme worship of the Lord: "O Shiva! You are my Self. My
mind is Parvati. My Pranas are your servants. My body is your house. My actions in this world are
your worship. My sleep is Samadhi. My walk is circumambulation of you. My speech is your prayer.
Thus do I offer all that I am to you.
MahaShivaRatri is thus not only a ritual but also a cosmic definition of the Hindu universe. It dispels
ignorance, emanates the light of knowledge, makes one aware of the universe, ushers in the spring
after the cold and dry winter, and invokes the supreme power to take cognizance of the beings that
were created by him
Many references to the Shiva Linga can be found in the various Hindu religious texts. The renowned
epic "Ramayana" shows how the demon king Ravana is gifted with tremendous powers following his
unceasing worship of Shiva Linga. In the Mahabharata, one comes across the incident of Arjuna's
invocation of the holy Shiva Linga and his attainment of the great weapon Pashupathastra.
But the most fascinating event associated with the greatness of Shiva Linga is the annual formation of
an astounding lingam wholly out of ice at a cave of Amarnath in Kashmir. While atheistically eyes
view this as a pure natural phenomenon, pious hearts believe this to be a divine act of Lord Shiva.
Because of this, Amarnath (situated in the midst of beautiful Himalayas) is considered to be an
extremely Spiritual place. Every year, people from distant places come over to climb up the high
mountains, only to have a glimpse of the startling ice Shiva Linga.

The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rig Veda. It is called the Maha
Mrityunjaya mantra, the Great Death-Conquering mantra. It is a mantra that has many names and
forms. It is called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva; the Trayambakam
mantra, alluding to Shiva's three eyes; and its is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra
because it is a component of the "life-restoring" practice given to the primordial sage Shukra after he
had completed an exhausting period of austerity. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages
as the heart of the Veda. Along with the Gayatri mantra it holds the highest place among the many
mantras used for contemplation and meditation.

Chanting Shiva Mantra (Om Namah Shivaya 108 times daily gives positive results soon)
Some Shiva Linga from my Puja: Narmadeshwara, Parad, Blood Stone and the Crystal Holy Bull
Nandi etc.
All beings of Light, Beings of Darkness, Devas, and Asuras worship Lord Shiva and are blessed so in
Shiva Temples you can find all such beings though they are not visible to the naked eye, those with
extra psychic powers can see and interact with them. Shiva Linga are both Natural (Narmadeshwara
from Narmada River and Amarnath the Ice Shiva Linga etc.) and Man Made.
Natural Narmadeshwara Shivalinga are now very rare and not found easily due to the area being
flooded by Narmada Dam, what is being sold is man made from the stones in Narmada River.

This one is a rare Natural one having been in our puja for over fifty eight years.
Parad Shiva Linga (Made of Sanskarit Parad (Mercury) (From My Puja) Is the only Shiva linga
which is allowed to be worshipped by Humans only and no other being (Genuine Parad Shiva Linga
are very rare and the mere possession is a blessing and Guarantees overall spiritual and material
development) Worshiping a Parad Shiva Linga gives the Punya of Dwadash Jyotirlinga (Twelve
Orbs (Pillar) of Light)) darshan and Puja.
It is a Swarna Graas Shiva Linga (Which eats Gold foil or silver foil when it is comes in
contact during Puja offering) In a special ritual gold or silver foil is offered to the linga along
with various other things during Abhishek (Honey, Sugar Cane Juice, Ghee, Milk, Milk +Water
