Eric Paslay definitely knows how to craft a hit song. Jake Owen, Ras-
cal Flatts, Love and Theft and Eli Young Band all have scored No. 1 singles
thanks to Paslays song-writing ability, and fans who have seen him on
stage will testify there is so much more to the tall, Texas redhead than
his song writing. Paslay is a charismatic performer and a potent vocalist
who knows how to connect with the audience. As his debut albums lead
single Friday Night reached the No. 1 spot, Paslay has arrived as an art-
ist in his own right.
It all started for Paslay when he began playing guitar and writing
songs at 15.
I wrote a poem for a girl, he says. I never gave it to her, and then I
discovered that most songs are poems so I just put a melody and chords
to the poem, and there was my first song. By the time I was 16, Id already
made a CD on my home computer of about 10 or 11 songs that I played
out around Texas. Those records will come back and haunt me someday,

Down and dirty tourney spikes fun

JUNE 30-JULY 3 Various times
Hill & Front Streets

Lets get in the mud! signals the start of the Y-Mens annual volleyball
tournament. The tournament, in its 37th year, is held at the Y-Mens Pavil-
ion in the 100 block of Hill Street. The tournament, with a double-elimina-
tion format, is played on three courts of good ole Mighty Mississippi mud.
Up to 64 teams of as many as eight co-ed players, high school sophomores
and older, volley for prizes.
This tournament originated in 1979 with approximately 31 teams par-
ticipating. It is believed to be the oldest mud volleyball tournament in the
United States. Credit for the unique event belongs to Robert Heiser, a char-
ter member of the Y-Mens Club. This event has become a very significant
way for the Y-Men to raise money. During the last 30-plus years, the Y-Mens
Club has raised more than $300,000 for the YMCA of Hannibal.
There is plenty of spectator room near the three courts to watch this
unusual entertainment. Refreshments and snacks are available along with
music.
Tournament times are 5 p.m. Thursday, June 30, and Friday, July 1, and
7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3. More information on the event
is available by contacting the YMCA of Hannibal at 573-221-0586 or via

The Life & Times
of Clarence Earl Gideon
Hannibal native key to landmark Supreme
Court ruling on right to legal representation
By Ken Marks

A
51-year-old drifter with a history of petty crime finds
himself involved in what would become a landmark
Supreme Court case in the 1960s.
If the premise sounds like a high-concept movie
pitch, its because a book and movie have been made
about this story: Gideons Trumpet. The true story
centers on the struggles of Hannibal native Clarence Earl Gideon, a man
whose life before and after the court case would not inspire many to
include him among prominent Hannibalians in history. In portraying the
impact of this major event in recent legal history, a risk exists in uninten-
tionally glorifying the man to reinforce the importance of the moment.
In other words, history is not always pretty so how does one solve a
problem like Gideon?
Clarence Earl Gideons personal life was riddled with disappoint-

his body and buried him in Hannibals Mount Olivet Cemetery in what
remained an unmarked grave until the eastern Missouri affiliate of the

It is hard to overstate the importance of the Gideon decision over the
last 48 years in establishing legal rights to all American citizens across all
states; it reinforced a more literal reading of the Constitution as it refers to
personal rights. The case inspired the nonfiction book Gideons Trum-

earning two Emmy nominations.

humidity levels. What you need to be aware of
in the summer is the potential effects of being
exposed to high heat. If you dont pay atten-

temperature, you could be in danger of heat
exhaustion, or worse, heat stroke.
Dr. Richard Valuck of Hannibal Regional Medical Group offers
his advice about the heat and its effect on your heart health.

in the summer. They are a part of a continuum where you get hot,

Dr. Valuck, an avid runner, each year join the Hannibal Cannibal

Valuck said. If you exercise outside, plan to do so when the temper-
