thanks to Paslays song-writing ability, and fans who have seen him on

his song writing. Paslay is a charismatic performer and a potent vocalist

It all started for Paslay when he began playing guitar and writing
songs at 15.
I wrote a poem for a girl, he says. I never gave it to her, and then I
discovered that most songs are poems so I just put a melody and chords
to the poem, and there was my first song. By the time I was 16, Id already

Lets get in the mud! signals the start of the Y-Mens annual volleyball
tournament. The tournament, in its 37th year, is held at the Y-Mens Pavil-
ion in the 100 block of Hill Street. The tournament, with a double-elimina-
tion format, is played on three courts of good ole Mighty Mississippi mud.
Up to 64 teams of as many as eight co-ed players, high school sophomores
and older, volley for prizes.
This tournament originated in 1979 with approximately 31 teams par-
ticipating. It is believed to be the oldest mud volleyball tournament in the
United States. Credit for the unique event belongs to Robert Heiser, a char-
ter member of the Y-Mens Club. This event has become a very significant
way for the Y-Men to raise money. During the last 30-plus years, the Y-Mens
Club has raised more than $300,000 for the YMCA of Hannibal.
There is plenty of spectator room near the three courts to watch this
unusual entertainment. Refreshments and snacks are available along with
music.
Tournament times are 5 p.m. Thursday, June 30, and Friday, July 1, and

Supreme Court case in the 1960s.
If the premise sounds like a high-concept movie
pitch, its because a book and movie have been made
about this story: Gideons Trumpet. The true story
centers on the struggles of Hannibal native Clarence Earl Gideon, a man
whose life before and after the court case would not inspire many to
include him among prominent Hannibalians in history. In portraying the
impact of this major event in recent legal history, a risk exists in uninten-
tionally glorifying the man to reinforce the importance of the moment.
In other words, history is not always pretty so how does one solve a
problem like Gideon?
