Homestay Tourism in Karnataka:
Opportunities and Challenges

INTRODUCTION
The term Home stay means staying in some ones home as
a paying guest for short period of time. But such guests are
provided with accommodation and services by individual
family and community too. The Home stay seeks to draw
tourists away from crowded urban areas to rural locality full of
splendid surroundings, by providing them with clean,
comfortable and budget friendly accommodation and food.
Thus, Home stay offers the travellers unique and local
experience and possibilities of interaction with the host family.
It offers the chance to experience new and untapped place
which has enabled the government to popularise new tourist
destinations and provides alternative source income to rural
folks.
A network of Home Stays across the Karnataka is branded
as ATITHI, are becoming quite popular with tourists in
Karnataka now, as they provide all the comforts of a home,
whether looking for a personalised experience based on holiday
of a place to relax and to be at peace after hectic schedule.,
without compromising on the comforts of a hotel. Home Stay
will give the best of relaxation. Home stays are usually located
amidst greenery and close to nature. But whats common to
them all is the opportunity of staying with a family,
experiencing their indomitable sprit of hospitality, participating
in the recreational activities of the area, not forget the authentic
cuisines and still having own private space to reflect on it.
Several home stays even arrange for well being such as yoga,
Ayurveda treatments. It provides the artistic activities

to Mysore Coorg , western Ghats, Gokarna, Shimoga
b) To emphasise the major opportunities available for the
home stay tourism in Karnataka
c) To identify the challenges faced in the development of
home stay in Karnataka
d) To offer valuable recommendations so as to make home
stay tourism more viable
Methodology
The study perspective of Home stay Tourism in Karnataka:
opportunities and challenges is based on the secondary data
collected from books, magazine, journals, news paper and
websites.
HOME STAYS IN MYSORE
Home stays are recent trend in Mysore are fast becoming a
viable budget stay options for travellers. Mysore Dasara a
seasonal event and year round Mysore Palace attraction
ensure a steady stream of tourists to this Royal Heritage
City, this creates a year round demand for quality budget
accommodation.
Home stay facilitates to get an in light into local people and
their traditions. It gives an opportunity to mingle and enjoy

is fast emerging as an industry. Kodagu is one of the most
famous hill station in India, proudly nicknamed as
Kashmir of South/ Switzerland of India etc. Blessed
with beauty and bounty of forests and mountains, it is also
known as Mother Natures special place. It is truly a nature
lovers paradise with great landscape, lush green valleys,
misty woods, racing rivers and enchanting waterfalls ,
kodavas are inhabitants of kodagu, having their diverse
typical taste, creed, colour, language and dress code.It is
the land of coffee, birth place of river Kaveri , the life line
of Karnataka, so tourist through to this place, there are
more than 800 home stays to cater the needs of tourist.
Karnataka s guide lines for Home stays exempts taxes for
liquor served in Home stay. Few important Home stay are,
Gowri nivas, Sai Sadan which is fully furnished, Honey
Pot Homes, Vindhyas which has charming cottages
,Kedakal ,Coorg Coffee Hills located with all facilities in
coffee hill, Casa Coorg, Spice Garden, Palace Estste.

CHALLENGES OF HOME STAY
Poor infrastructural facilities such as good roads,
transpiration, electricity, health care, communication
and other residential facilities and without these
facilities it is difficult to establish and promote better
service to existing as well as potential homestay
visitors
There is lack of proper legal regulations for
registration of home stay, booking and other relevant
policies
Marketing and promotion of Home stay tourism is
also lacking in the state of Karnataka. There is no
as
proper arrangement for extension of marketing and
network in the state.
There is poor co-ordination among different tourism
participants such as Government , tourism organisers
and intermediaries and other non Government bodies
with Home stay tourism
Less awareness regarding conservation of natural as
well as cultural resources among locals, lack of eco
tourism practices is also a major challenge in
successful development of Home stay.
Improper management of resources at the destination
is also a big challenge in extension of Home stay
viability
Poor maintence of peace security and chaos situation
which demotivate foreign tourist to visit
RECOMMENDATIONS
There must be some recommendations to
achieve greater heights
There is a need of preparation of Home
stay planning and development for the local people.
Hence the local people of the proposed home stay
tourism destination should be technically assisted to
prepare Home stay planning and development
The locals of the Home stay destination should be
given training on leadership, hospitality along with
food and beverage by using local menu so that the
tourists can get quality service

Loan subsidy and other fiscal incentives should be

provided to the local people for upgrade their existing Current Affairs
facilities i,bed rooms, bathrooms tap cleanliness

Home stay tourism destination should be connected with

other tourism stake holder of the country and promotion
should also be done by tourism entrepreneurs
Government should provide the Leave Travel Concession
for public servants and promote them to go on Home stay
tourism
There is a need of development of Home stay tourism data base so
that tourists can easily explore choose and book their stsy
CONCLUSION
The Karnataka tourism market is huge and it has great
offering and products, the concerned stake holders have to
exploit and reap the benifits. Home stay is a Micro
tourism entrepreneurship It is new concept adopted by
Karnataka lately. Lot of enthusiastic groups and
individuals are eager to run this business, Government
lacks a concerted vision, policy strategy and program and
this is a crucial aspect that must be addressed. It has to do
a lot of homework because it can be an instrument of
poverty mitigation a very valuable strategy.
