OPEN ENDED LABORATORY FOR CES511

Briefing on OEL for CES511 WEEK 3

- What is OEL?
- How to carry out OEL?

Students are required to do literature review (at least 3 journal articles as WEEK 3-5
references)
Presentation on Design Concrete Mix for normal concrete Grade C25 WEEK 6
and procedures of experimental work for:
- Strengthening of RC beam
- Retrofitting of damaged RC beam

Laboratory work: WEEK 7

- Preparation of reinforcement bars for beam specimens
- For tension reinforcement, use T12
- For compression reinforcement and links, use T10

Laboratory work: WEEK 8

- Preparation of material (aggregate, sand & cement) please ensure the
course aggregate is sieve before mixing.
- Prepare mould for beams (150x150x750mm) and cubes (150x150mm)
- Concrete mixing (for control and composite at one time)
- Casting of concrete for beams and cubes
- Workability test (e.g. slump test) for both control and composite
specimens.
- Specimen demoulding after 1-day of casting
- Curing process inside water tank
- Other details: Cover 20mm, Maximum Aggregate 20mm,

Two beams need to be prepared, consist of:

i) 1 normal RC beam (control specimen)
ii) 1 composite RC beam that has been strengthened using steel fiber,
polypropylene fiber, nails, Kenaf or other materials.

Six cubes need to be prepared, consist of:

i) 3 normal cubes (control specimen)
ii) 3 composite cubes.
Note: Evaluation for practical skill will be done individually.

LAB LEVEL (3): MONITORING THE CRACK PROPAGATION WEEK 7-9

OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM

Objective: To determine the crack behavior of the reinforced concrete

beam experimentally.

The students are required to prepare the beam sample and carry out the
SEPTEMBER 2014

flexural testing under three-point bending test. During testing, students

need to monitor crack propagation of the specimen by taking videos and
pictures. The testing is to be carried out until the macro-crack appears at
the tension area (mid-span) of the beam with crack width 3mm. Stop
the testing. Record the maximum load and deflection from the data
logger.

LAB LEVEL (3): STRENGTHENING OF REINFORCED WEEK 7-9

CONCRETE BEAM

Objective: To propose the techniques to strengthen the beam using any

composite material and compare with control specimen.

Strengthening of reinforced concrete beam is carried out using any

composite material to enhance the flexural performance of the beam.
Students are required to propose the techniques for strengthening one
reinforced concrete beam by using any composite material (for example
the steel fiber) to enhance the flexural performance of the beam. Then,
set up an experiment to carry out the flexural testing on the specimens.
From the experiment, students need to compare by observing the
performance between the control specimen and the strengthened
specimen. Students must read any related journal papers before carry out
the repair work on the specimen.

LAB LEVEL (3): REPAIR AND RETROFITTING OF WEEK 10-11

REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM

Objective: To propose the techniques to repair and retrofitting damaged

reinforced concrete beam and compared with results before retrofitting

There are several materials needed for patch repair such as CFRP, steel
plate, epoxy, reinforcement bar, bolts, and other methods. By using the
control specimen, students are required to do flexural testing on the
tested specimen and students are required to repair the specimen using
suggested techniques and methods. The flexural testing under three-
point bending test will be carried out to the retrofitted specimen.
Students must read any related journal papers before carry out the repair
work on the specimen.

LAB LEVEL (2): COMPRESSIVE TEST ON COMPOSITE WEEK 12 (OR

MATERIALS AT 28-DAY OF
CURING)
Objective: To compare the compression strength of the composite
material with normal concrete at 28-day of curing.
SEPTEMBER 2014

Way and mean: Students are required to carry out the compressive
strength on control specimens and composite specimens. Comparison
between these specimens is to be recorded and discussed.
