Augmented Reality

Overview of augmented reality: Augmented reality combines digital information with

the real environment. Augmented reality consists of placing virtual objects in the real
world in your current environment.

How to use augmented reality: Augmented reality is used in three different ways:
through augmented reality browsers, through augmented reality 3D viewers and through
augmented reality gaming. To use augmented reality, you must have a technology device
such as a smartphone, iPad or tablet. Next, you need to download an augmented reality
3D viewer, browser or game. There are a variety of different ones you can choose from.
Download one that is appropriate for the setting you want to use augmented reality for.
After you have downloaded the appropriate augmented reality 3D viewer, browser or
game, open it up and point your technology device to an item. For example, if you use an
augmented reality browser, you can point your iPad towards a building and history of the
building may pop up.

Benefits of using augmented reality in education:

-It can provide viewers with richer, deeper learning experience for users.
-Allows students to participate in lessons.
-It is engaging to learners.
-Can be used to capture students attention.
-Students can access models to concepts they are learning from anywhere (outside
the classroom).
-Can help individuals develop visual, spatial, mathematical abilities.
-Promotes creativity.
-Encourages student interaction
-Stimulates diversity

Weaknesses of using augmented reality:

-Issues of privacy control
-Most augmented reality experiences cost money
-Could be a distraction to an individuals surrounding environment
-Could lead to dangerous situations such as physical harm or coming into contact
with strangers.

How augmented reality can support teaching and learning:

-Augmented reality can be used to learn letters, learn about animals, occupations,
dinosaurs and space.
-Students can read books with augmented reality features to help enhance their
understanding concepts.
-Augmented reality can be used to teach students about the relationship between the sun
and the earth.
-Augmented reality can be used to assist students with their homework. Students can scan
their homework page to see a video of their teacher assisting them in solving a problem.
