Year: 8 Learning Area: Science- Biology
Topic: Growth and Development- Internal/ External Fertilisation and Development

Curriculum content description: (from SCSA)

Multi-cellular organisms contain systems of organs carrying out specialised functions
that enable them to survive and reproduce (ACSSU150)
Students prior knowledge and experience:
Cells and cell types
Male and female reproductive system in humans
Male and female reproductive cells- Gametes (sperm and egg)
Fertilisation in humans

Learning purpose:
To understand the different methods of fertilisation, development and parental care in
different animals.
Learning objectives: Evaluation:
On completion of this lesson, students Questioning during lesson
will be able to: Crossword at the end of lesson
Differentiate between internal and
external fertilisation.
Provide examples for animals that
reproduce internally and externally.
Differentiate between internal and
external development.
Provide examples for animals that
develop internally and externally.
Parental care increases the chance
of survival.
Animals that provide parental care
are the ones that do not produce
many off-springs.
Preparation and Resources:
Powerpoint- flow of the lesson
Where Willy Went- audio book
Activity cards- create and print
Crossword- create and print
Source videos
Catering for diversity:

Simple language for non-linguistic learners

Diagrams and videos for visual learners
Mix of group work and individual tasks- for discussion and sharing of ideas

Timing: Learning Experiences:

9:50 Open powerpoint

1. Introduction:

OUTSIDE CLASSROOM
9:53 - Introduce myself (general chat)
- All you need today is your exercise book and a pen
- Come inside

Recap of the previous lesson (Human Fertilisation):

9:55
Audio book- Where Willy went
Questions (assessing prior knowledge):
- What is the male reproductive cell called?
- Where is it produced?
- What is the female reproductive cell called?
- Where is it produced?
- What is fertilisation?
- What is formed when a male and female reproductive cell
combine?

In todays lesson we will talk about:

10:05 Methods of fertilisation
Development
Parental Care

2. Sequence of learning experiences:

Methods of Fertilisation:
10:07 Internal fertilisation- What is? How? Who?
What are the benefits of fertilising inside the female body?
External fertilisation- What is? How? Who?
Is there a disadvantage to external fertilisation?
Students draw a comparison chart comparing internal and external
fertilisation with examples
Development
Emperor Penguin Egg development video (external development)
10:15 Differences between internal and external development
What sort of animals do you think would develop externally?
Examples of animals

Parental Care:
Why?
What are the benefits to the off-spring if they receive parental care?
10:23
Which animals do you think receive care from their parent?
Emperor Penguin parental care video (if time)

Activity: Exploring Animal development and parental care (group task)

Each group (3-4 students) is given a card with an animal on it
10:30 Have a read about the animal assigned to you, and consider these
questions as you read. You have 5 minutes to read your card
When everyone is done reading, each group can share a couple of
interesting points about their animal
Questions:
- How would you classify your animal- Mammal, Bird, Reptile,
Insect?
- Where does fertilisation occur?
- What is the development process?
- Does the parent care for their young?
- Anything fascinating?
Sharing:
Platypus
Flying Fox
Wallaby
Echidna
Sea Turtle
Gastric brooding frog
Seahorse

Activity: Crossword
10:40

Collect up crosswords (to evaluate whether lesson objectives were
understood)
Summarise lesson by going through crossword answers
