1) Mean diameter of
Screw (d)
Mean diameter

dc = d0 p
2) Thread angle ()
p or 2p or 3p
= tan1 ( d )
p for single start
2p for double start
3p for triple start
3) Angle of Friction ()
For Square Threads... = tan1 ()
For Trapezoidal threads.. = tan1 ( cos15 )
For ACME threads .. = tan1 ( cos 14.5 )
4) Torque Required
Torquerequiredtoraiseload

Problem 1:
A screw jack carries a load of 25 kN. If the coefficient of
friction between screw and nut is 0.15, Design the screw and
nut. Neglect collar friction and column action
take c = 42 N /mm2 and = 30 N /mm2 f or screw
and nut = 30 N /mm2 f or nut
Allowable bearing pressure = 14 N /mm2 (Use single
start thread).
Problem 2:
A screw jack carries a load of 22 kN. If the coefficient of
friction between screw and nut is 0.15, Design the screw and
nut. Neglect collar friction and column action
take c = 42 N /mm2 and = 28 N /mm2 f or screw
and nut = 21 N /mm2 f or nut
Allowable bearing pressure = 14 N /mm2 (Use single
start thread).
