Learning Plan NURS 208

1. Strengths in clinical practice (in relation to course abilities/outcomes).

1. Act in a responsible, ethical and accountable manner. Ex. taking part in report (transfer of
accountability) and by taking responsibility for any mistakes that have been made. Alerting the
appropriate people, check on my patients status, and documenting actions taken.

2. Ensure client safety and a safe environment- ex. Lowering bed, placing call bell back, lock wheels
on wheelchair etc.

3. Establish therapeutic caring, compassionate, and culturally safe relationships with clients and health
care team members. I introduce my self to the client. I find out their interest and dislikes and talk to
them about it. I encourage them to be part of their plan of care all the while being culture sensitive.

2. Areas of clinical practice to continue to develop.

1. Document clearly, accurately, concisely in a timely manner using written and electronic methods- ex.
I have improved greatly on my documentation writing skills but I need to work on becoming timelier
about the entries in written and electronic methods.

2. Respond appropriately to unsafe, unacceptable, and unprofessional behaviours. Ex. a nurse just left
an IV open to the air and did not cap the end. I should have addressed the situation with the nurse but
only advised my clinical teacher.

3. Prioritize nursing care and nursing interventions in order to manage workload, time, and physical
resources. Ex. I would like to work on being at to prioritize patients based off their diagnosis.

3. Effective learning strategies in clinical practice.

Goal 1 learning strategies:

1. Review appropriate medical terminology so it is first nature and flows quickly onto paper by
September 2016
2. Try/ find different worksheets that organize the care I provide in a fashion that works best for me that
I can pull the information from quickly to document what I need too by December 2016
3. Take time to learn the electronic system that way I become faster at entering the information I need
to by December 2016

Goal 2 learning strategies:

1. Review CNO document on patient safety care by September 2016.
2. Review mandatory reporting CNO document September 2016
3. Review policy and procedures at Humber River Hospital for unsafe care September - December
2016

Goal 3 learning strategies:

1. Review Potter and Perry nursing book and Lewis Med serge by September 2016 - these books
contain nursing interventions for all illness and conditions
2. Practice concept maps at home over the summer. Do at least one a week by September 2016
3. Each clinical day work on a concept back (emphasis on priorities and nursing interventions)
September to December 2016
