Shamecontributestoanxietybecauseofthesensethatyouarenotagood
person.Thiscreatesanxietyinanyoftheformslistedabove.Thisfeeling
manifestsitselfinsomeofthewaysalsomentionedabove.Dependingonhow
ashamedonefeelscangivesomecluesastohowanxiousonemightfeel.The
defensesagainstshame,suchasdenialandwithdrawal,leadpeopleto
disconnectwiththeirenvironmentandthosewhomtheylove.Whenoneis
isolatedapersonalloss,howeveritssize,takesongreaterweight.Alife
changecanbehardertohandle,bothbecausethereisathoughtthatitshould
nothavehappenedandalsohowwellwillIhandleit.

Whenyoumorecloselylookatyourselftoseewhatyourshamelevelmightbe
youoftencomeupwiththerealizationthatyoualwayscriticizeyourself,that
youoftencompareyourselftoothers,andthatanychangeinrelationshipgive
proofthatyoucannotholdontogoodonesandtherebyconfirmyoursenseof
shame.Whenyoufeelashamedyoufearbeingalone.Youwillbewhatever
someoneelsewantsyoutobe.Youwillignoreyourself.Yoursenseofanxiety
isheightenedthemoreyouexperiencedisconnectionfromyourself.Youfeel
anxiousthatmaybeyoucannotprotectyourselffrombeingseenbyothers.
Youalsofeelanxiousthatyouarenotgoodenoughtobeseenbyothers.

andhowtheyworkonanxietyinyou.Youneedtoacceptyourselfasyouare,
completewithanxietyandpanicanduseanyoneofanumberofgoodtoolsto
begintolearnhowtodealwiththeseproblems.Thisispartofthegoalofthe
course,whichIteach.Youcanlearntodistinguishdifferentformsofpanicand
whattheirconsequencescouldbe.Youcanlearntoretreatwhenappropriate.

difficultanxiousmomentsyoumayneedtheassistanceofaprofessional
therapistand/orappropriatemedication.

Workingwithanxietydealsnotonlywithcopingwithit.Italsomeanshelpingto
healtheshamethatiswithinyou.Dothiswithsomeonewhocanhelp.
Challengetheshame.Setpositivegoalsbasedonhumanity,humility,
autonomy,andcompetence.Theseandmanyotherstrategieshelpyouto
reduceyourlevelofshameandtomangeyouranxietymoreeffectively.
