 Introduction

This work shows Trends from Grandmaster and Master play

in three different opening systems for White:
The London System (d4, f)f3, ,Q,f4)

The Colle-Zukertort System (d4, f)f3, e3)

The Stonewall Opening (d4, e3, f4)
Each of the main systems (London and Colle-Zukertort) pro-
vide users the means to reach good playable positions from
the opening by a simple developing routine which cuts out
many early combinations but which may build up into fiery
games or ones exercising fine control.
The whole book should be helpful to those who, when Black,
need to round off their tournament repertoire against the
growing menace of these apparently innocuous lines.
The Stonewall is rarely entered directly at master level by 1
d4 and 2 e3. But the formation, blanketing and controlling
the centre, features in very many queen's pawn openings.

These London Systems, in
which Whi te uses the moves 1
d4, 2 ~f3 and 3 ~f4 against
almost any system of deve-
lopment by Black, are growing
in popularity. The name sterns
from the prestigious London
1922 tournament where White
used these moves against
Black's Kings Indian (e.g Ca-
pablanca - Reti) , versus 1 d4
~f6 2 ~f3 ds 3 ~f4 cs (C.G.
Watson - Capablanca), and
versus 1 d4 ~f6 2 ~f3 ds 3 ~f4
e6 (Rubinstein - Tartakower).
There is a wide variety of
ideas evolving. This may part-
ly be because few masters
make an in-depth study of the
resulting mid game positions
and many tend to improvise.
We have concentrated on dis-
playing the richness of pat-
terns rather than being cer-
tain about the future trends.
