Project 4 COMPOSITE FIGURES

PROVE THAT THE WHOLE IS THE SUM OF THE PIECES.

Given is a 7 piece set of physical tangrams plus graph cut outs sheet indicating
measure, and this worksheet which needs to be completed. You will prove that
the sum of the pieces are equal to a whole figure.

1. Take the set and find the measure of each piece and record. Use the correct
formulas to find the area for each polygon.

Large Triangle What is the formula _A= hbb/2______________

The height of the triangle is 10 and the base is 20 so when multiplying them you
get the area.

A= (10*20)/2
What is the area
100__________

Large Triangle What is the formula _A= hbb/2______________

This is the exact same triangle as the first one so again the area is

A=(10*20)/2
What is the area
100__________

Medium Right Triangle What is the formula _A= ab/2______________

For the right triangle both sides a and b are 10 so to get the area you would
multiply them and divide by 2.

A= (10*10)/2

What is the area

50__________

Small Triangle What is the formula _A= hbb/2______________

For the small triangle you would do the same as with the big triangles. So the
height is 5 and the base is 10.

A= (5*10)/2
What is the area
25__________

Small Triangle What is the formula _A= hbb/2______________

This is the exact same one as the previous one so again you would just multiply
the height and base and divide by 2.

A= (5*10)/2

What is the area

25__________

Parallelogram What is the formula _A= bh______________

To find the area of the parallelogram you just multiply the base and height. The
base is 10 and the height is 5.

A= 10*5

What is the area

50__________

Square What is the formula _A= a2________________

To find the area of the square you would just square one of its sides. Since I
couldnt really count the cubes for any of the sides since they look like this
I decided to fold the square in half and that created 2 triangles so then I just
multiplied the base and height for one of the triangles without dividing by 2
because its a square.

A= (10*5)

What is the area

50__________

2. Take the set and construct one large triangle using all the 7 tangrams
Draw a diagram of what it looks like (use Microsoft tools)

To find the area of this large triangle using the 7 pieces, I used the same formula
as for any other triangle. A= hbb/2
The height was 20 and the base was 40 so, A= (20*40)/2 =400 I was already
expecting this answer because if I add all of the areas for the seven pieces
separately it also equals 400 (100+100+50+25+25+50+50).

What is the Area of this large Triangle 400_______________

Is the measure the same as all the parts Yes_______________

3. Take the set and construct one large rectangle using all the 7 tangrams

Draw a diagram of what it looks like (use Microsoft tools)

To find the area of the large rectangle the formula is A=lw but since I couldnt
really count the square for the length or width because they looked like
I just found the area for one of the big triangles without dividing it by 2 so that
was the area for both of the big triangles which equals 200 and I knew that if I
multiplied that 2 it would give me the area for the whole rectangle which is 400.
What is the Area of this Large Rectangle 400_______________

Is the measure the same as all the parts Yes_______________

4. Take the set and construct one large square using all the 7 tangrams

Draw a diagram of what it looks like (use Microsoft tools)

To find the area of the large square I just counted the little square for one of the
sides since I know all sides are equal. The formula is A=a 2 and one of the sides is
20 so 202= 400.
What is the Area of this Large Square 400______________

Is the measure the same as all the parts Yes_______________

If I were to teach tangrams to my kindergarten class I would definitely

have them do a puzzle piece because as I was doing this activity it
instantly reminded me of that. I would probably print out the shape of a
certain picture and then give them the separate pieces to complete the
picture so they can figure how the pieces connect to create the big final
picture.
