Caution in
purchasing fodder
By Kate Taylor

Farmers are being warned of spreading serrated tussock in

fodder in upcoming seasons.
The Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party (VSTWP) is
advising landowners to ensure fodder and hay purchased
this summer and autumn is free of noxious weeds and in
particular, serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma).
The previous year has seen perfect conditions for this weed
of national significance to seed prolifically, resulting in many
paddocks being infested prior to bailing for fodder, said VS-
TWP Executive Officer Martin Deering.
Whilst it can be difficult to inspect all fodder purchased for
noxious weeds, Mr Deering suggests landowners should at-
tempt to purchase stockfeed from reputable outlets that can
verify the absence of declared noxious weeds and from areas
outside of the serrated tussock core infestations around the
fringes of northern and western Melbourne.

Festival flourishes
Landowners are often unaware of the grassy weed in their
paddocks, especially during a good spring like the one we
just had, and may bale paddocks unaware of the viable seeds
in the fodder, noted Mr Deering.

include vehicle and machinery hygiene, removing serrated

Murphy v Maher showdown

Ballan Football

Seniors
The Blues opened their 2017 season against Gordon, with
a line up that include five first time senior players, and it
was an intense match to start their first 18 career. The new
kids on the block Thompson, Shaw, Conlan, Boland, Layley
and Bongart are sure to have learnt a lot from the match.
The Blues certainly had their share of the play and fought
out every contest but the Eagles had too many winners up
forward and the Blues on the other hand were well held up
forward. Jason McNamara and Jarrod Graham battled hard
all day in the centre but the Eagles finals experience from
last year and the inclusion of Richardson, made life a real
challenge for this young raw squad. Tanti was also a tireless
worker in the middle and easily deserved his BOG. The
Blues were not disgraced and will have another tough match
against Buninyong at home next week. Congratulations to
Tye Murphy from Gordon who won the Murphy/Maher Photos: Tim Saultry
trophy and Peter Cliffordfor his management of the day.
Final Scores- Ballan 7 2 44 lost Gordon 24 14 158.
Best - D. Tanti, J. Wilkinson, S. Hitchings, J. Graham, S. Sher,
A. Mullane.
The Reserves were on fire at the start of the match with
Watts at his best up forward and Fyfe also gave the Blues
plenty of run. Paddy did a great job in the backline following
his extensive pre season training. The Blues had runners on
every line like Pascoe, Tom McGregor and Dylan Trickey
and they grew in confidence as the game progressed. Justin
Fenwick was a tower of strength in the backline and split
many a pack wide open. In the third quarter the Blues took
their foot off the pedal but came home well in the final
quarter. A great result to start the year but next week will be
a real test.
Final Scores: Ballan 16 5 101 def Gordon 9 7 61.
Best - D. Trickey, T. McGregor, T. Trickey, N. Kettle, R. Watts,

The Under 18s took on a undermanned Eagles line up and
had a scoring feast. The Eagles did put in a determined effort Central Highlands Netball League
