Sermon: Foolish And Slow Of Heart?

Rev. James Steiner

Scripture: Luke 24: 13-35

So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the
kingdom to Israel? (Acts 1:6)

As you receive this edition of Up on the Hill, I hope you are continuing your preparations for Easter,
and I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities for worship not only at Hill, but in the
community.
Holy Week begins Palm Sunday, marking Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Thursday April 13, we observe Maundy Thursday at Hill, Jesus Last Supper.
Friday, April 14, the annual Good Friday Community Worship service is at St. Andrews, at
noon.

Sunday April 16 is Easter! Please come for the breakfast at 9:15 I know I am looking forward to
some great food and fellowship.

Please plan on joining the celebration, when we joyfully remember the most important event in human
history, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead! Regardless of what Andy Williams says,
EASTER is The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Maybe you are wondering, Why that particular verse at the top of the page? The Eleven Disciples
(remember, Judas was dead) had seen the Resurrected Christ, and had been with him another forty days.
They asked the question just before Jesus ascended.

We now know their question was misplaced Jesus was NOT about to restore the kingdom to Israel, at
least in the way the Disciples were thinking.

But what about our own idea of the Risen Christ?

As I have said before, before Jesus was raised from the dead, what had to happen? Thats right, he had
to die. And why was it necessary for him to die? Thats right, so we can recognize and admit our own
sin, and receive the grace that comes only through the life, death, and (yes!) Resurrection of our Savior
and Lord, Jesus Christ.

My friends, Easter is indeed the most wonderful time of the year even better than Christmas! But let
us not lose sight of what happened before that Sunday morning Jesus Christ, Gods only-begotten
Son, died for us.

Then we will have reason to celebrate! He is Risen! Thanks be to God!

In Christ,

Pastor Jim

P.S. Elsewhere in Up on the Hill, please find the results of the surveys we collected the ten graphs
are from the questionnaire we handed out. Also included are comments from the Table Talk event we
had after the Annual Meeting. The Transition Team (Barb Graham, Barb Kamerer, Maryanne Puente,
Marsh Miller, Diane Olenic, Lauren McElhaney, Chad Provident) continues to work on the Self-Study,
and is nearing its completion. The Holy Spirit has been active in our deliberations and discussions, but
He is also challenging all of us to re-think Hills ministry and approach for the future. As I have said
from the pulpit, Its not 1956 anymore! In order for the Gospel to thrive at 2nd and Brady, we need to
respond to the changes God has in store for us. Continue to pray that the Holy Spirit will illumine our
hearts regarding what Hill needs to in the future.

Administration Report
The committee met on February 28th and agreed to accept the donation of a conference
table and 10 chairs, a desk and hutch unit, several filing cabinets, a gently used refrigerator
with ice maker, and a nearly new electric range.
Many thanks to Alan Milanovich who oversaw the renting of a U-Haul truck, disassembling
and preparation of furniture prior to the move. On March 16, the "Hill Church Movers"
gathered in force to load, transport and unload these items. These guys did an awesome job!
Thank you to Tom Graham, Bob Graham, Ray Daugherty, Jim Kamerer, Dave Olenic,
Marsh Miller, Greg Heist, Pete McElhaney, and Steve Arn. All items were transported and
placed in the church without incident.
A special thank you to Alan Milanovich and custodian John Whittington for getting
furniture moved and appliances disconnected etc. in preparation of the move.
Rev. Steiner and several members of the committee and congregation met with a
representative from Garaventa Lift Company to hear a presentation on their product. Quoted
price for the "vertical wheelchair lift" and its installation was $29,485.
This figure does not include the cost of preparation of the location (estimate could be
$70,000 plus). Additional concerns to be addressed would be updating certain portions of
the church to meet code. This proposed project is a work in progress for the committee.
After several cancellations due to weather, the Garden Club hopes to begin meeting in April.
Submitted by:
Elders Louise Evans, Bob Kennedy, Alan Milanovich, Tom Graham
Co-opted Anne Miller, Pete McElhaney.
Please join us at for Hot Egg Casseroles, Mixed Fruit, Breads and
Muffins, Juice and Coffee on Easter Morning.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

We continue to hear from our student scholars, Elorm being one of the youngest.

Hello

My name is Elorm Asabea Akpedonu, fifteen years of age and a receipient of

your benevolent scholarship program for teenage girls in the Evangelical
Presbytarian Church. I would like to write a little bit about myself.

I come from a family of four, myself, my mother, my father and my elder

brother. My family, though small, is a happy one because it is made up of very fun-
loving people, most especially myself.

Furthermore, I am in my first year in the Senior High School and attending one
of the best girls schools we can find in Ghana. Our Lady of Apostles Senior High
School. (OLA) has been rated an A school since it has chalked a lot of success
over the years. I am an active person in school.

I love music a lot so I joined an Accapela group by the name Royhee in school,
a member of the French club and a member of the Naval Cadet Corps of the school.
I pursue General Arts in school. The course includes Government, Literature and
French which explains why I am in the French club and Christian Religious Studies
(CRS). I hope to becoming a lawyer in the near future.

To talk about myself, I am a sweet girl with a sweet voice, a shy type but very
friendly. I love comics and comedy and love to hang around people who make me
laugh.

I took the opportunity to write to you about myself, because I am on vacation and
will be resuming in April which is just around the corner. I would be busy for 15
(fifteen) weeks but I hope to be back probably in July/August.

This is just a bit about myself. There is a lot more. When I get back from school
I will do my best possible to be in touch.

PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE

Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District Churchs, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of
the Bubiashie Scholarship Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the
West Africa Liaison for the PC(USA), in your prayers. Also for Dr. McWilson Koku
Atakro, the Executive Presbyter for the West Volta Presbytery.
