Who Am I?

Speech Outline Name: Breanna McCostlin

Introduction
Begin with an attention getting devicesomething that will spark the curiosity of your
judges, making them want to pay close attention to the rest of your presentation.
This must relate and connect to your presentation. Some possibilities include a quote
with an explanation, questions that interest or provoke thought, and props that
relate to the presentation.
One day I read this quote I mean reality. The world is cancer and stuff is so bad its scary.
Everything is filthy. But you know what? One day its not going to be here. So be glad you
know what life is. Youre alive. Live. - Mitch Lucker 1984-2012. When I read this it made me
appreciate what I have, to be happy and not take everything for granite. What kind of
person do you think I would be working for you?
Who Am I?
Tell what kind of person, student and/or employee you are. More specifically, explain
how your characteristics and experiences qualify you for future success in the world
of work. Some topics to consider:
o What are your primary character traits? Provide examples of situations in your
life where those traits were evident.
Im the type of person who will go out of their way to help you or someone else in need, even
if its all I have left. I dont believe that everyone is different, we are all the same. A situation
that I have been in is when I had to make the difficult decision to go to a school trip or helping
out my parents with some money. I had chosen to give my parents the money they needed
for gas that week.
o What are your strengths and weaknesses as a student? How have you used
your strengths to your advantage? How have you tried to overcome your
weaknesses?
My strengths as a student are I am an excellent math student and I can understand it really
easily. My weaknesses are english and science, I dont comprehend them as easily. Math is a
real big advantage for me because it just comes to me really easily and it can really calm me
down. English and science have been really difficult because I dont understand them that
easily. I love to read books but it really doesnt help with my english. Science is like a whole
nother world for me. All the things that we would do in there went into one ear and out the
other.
o What extracurricular activities have you been involved in (both in and out of
school)? What interests you about those activities? How have you benefited
from your involvement in those activities?
I was an active water polo player and a swimmer. I am also apart of Friday Night Live
Mentoring. I have benefited from these programs showing me responsibility and has also
taught me time management. The 2 programs taught me how hard it can be to juggle your
time but it is possible. You just have to try and know how to break things up into different
times.
o Describe and comment on any volunteer or employment experiences you have
had. Be sure to include reflections on the contribution these experiences have
made to your growth as a person, student and/or employee.
I have volunteered with a youth football program where I was an active worker in the
concession stands handling money, ticket and most times the food. I have been doing this
since I was about 10 years old. It is very easy for me to follow directions and do what people
tell me to do and not to question them at all. I am able to do multiple things, like organize
things. I was also apart of Youth-to-Youth on April 1.

o What have you accomplished personally and/or academically that you are
proud of?
I dont know something that I have personally or academically achieved that I am proud of.
o What motivates you or what is important to you as a person, student and/or
employee?
The thing that motivates me is to do more than what my parents have done. I want to be
able to provide for my future family. I also want to have a stable home and not have to move
constantly because I cant afford to be there anymore. My life goal is to live in Merced and
get a job at El Capitan as a math teacher. I motivate myself, I dont really rely on anyone, but
me.
Identify your preferred career pathway(s) and specific career(s) of interest. Explain
why you have chosen this pathway based on how it fits your interests and personal
characteristics.
I am going straight to college and I am going to be a high school math teacher. I have wanted
to be a math teacher since 3rd grade. I have chosen this because math is my passion, I love it
so much. It personally helps me cope with a lot of thing and I can just get lost in doing math
problems all day. Personally I can just do math in my head and math also challenges me. That
is why I love it so much, its because I love to be challenged.

How Will I Get There?

What have you done in the past to prepare you for pursuit of your personal and
career goals?
o Consider classes you have taken, activities you have been involved in, career
planning and preparation experiences, etc.
AVID has played a huge roll in getting me ready for my career goal because when I become a
teacher I can show them helpful ways to take notes and keep them in order so that they are
easier to study. When I look back on what AVID had taught me, it taught me how to be
organized and also taught me an efficient way to study my notes before a test, a mini quiz
or even just if we are reviewing something in class.
o Describe the experiences and reflect on the value of those experiences. How
have they contributed to your growth as a person, student and/or employee?
Those experiences have taught me that notes really help with what you need. Also that if
you really need to find something you could just go under that tab in your binder and find
what you need for that day or even that class.
What are you doing presently that is contributing to your growth as a person,
student and/or employee?
I am working very hard to show that I can do what I set my mind to. I am an honest and
trustworthy person.
What specific plans do you have for achieving your personal and career goals?
o Describe the sequence of steps required to achieve of your goals, based on
what you know about the career(s)/field(s). Include the education and/or
training necessary to secure employment and be successful in your chosen
pathway(s) and/or career(s).
I have actually recently talked to someone wanting to do the same thing that I am trying to
do and she is about to graduate college. Her name is Sonia Lopez, she is an after school
tutor that works for assets. She was telling me the things that I need to do and a good
program to join for upcoming math and science teachers that help you get your teaching
credential faster.
Conclusion
Reflect on your personal and educational preparation for the future. How prepared
are you to begin pursuit of your goals?
I am very prepared and I plan to go through with everything I have planned to do to have a
better life than I do now. Later when I look back on what I have done to get where I am going
to be, Im going to be able to tell myself that I did everything that I could.
End with an interesting final comment that wraps up the content of your
presentation. Some possibilities include revisiting your attention getting device,
recapping or summarizing the presentation, and reflecting on the knowledge gained
through this process.
I have been through a tough and bumpy road and I may have hit some obstacles on the
way, but that hasnt stopped me from doing what I want to be doing.
