Famous Hoosier Research Project

Due Date: Wednesday, May 3rd

For our last project of the year, you will be researching a famous person from Indiana.
You can use library reference materials, your Indiana Studies Weekly, and the Internet
to find information about your topic. Please do NOT use Wikipedia.

Requirements
Research Paper
1. Take notes using the Famous Hoosier Packet. When you take notes, jot down the
information in your own words. Dont write complete sentences in your notes.
2. Make a list of where you found your information. This is called a bibliography.
You will need to make a good copy of your list to turn in with your project.
3. Write a rough draft (sloppy copy). Make sure you use complete sentences and
your rough draft is edited and revised before completing your final copy.
4. Make a good copy (typed) of your report that will be turned in. Your report will
be a minimum of 5 paragraphs.
5. Students will have time to work on the research and writing process of the report
during class, but please spend time researching at home as well.

Visual Aid (must be done at home)

1. You must also create a visual aid on your famous Hoosier in the form of a poster.
This can be a regular size poster or a trifold. This will be part of your project
grade as well.
2. The visual aid portion of the project will be required to work on at home. No
class time will be given to work on the visual aid. Please wait for instructions and
requirements to be sent home before you start your visual aid!

Speech

1. Students will give a short 2-3 minute oral speech on their famous Hoosier. We
will practice taking brief notes on what to say during the speech about our
famous Hoosier, however students will not be allowed to read off of notes during
their speech. During the speech, students will present their visual aid as well.
2. Students will be given a rubric on the guidelines for their speech so that they
know what is expected when they present.
Kind of Information to Include:

1. When and where was your Hoosier born?

2. Why are they famous? This is the most important part of the report. Make sure
you understand what they person did that made them famous. You need to
include lots of details.
3. Tell facts about their life family, jobs, education, etc.
4. If your famous Hoosier has died, tell when. If they are still alive, tell where they
live now.
5. Have a picture of your person (can include other pictures about persons work,
life, etc.)
6. Tell about any memorials or honors for your Hoosier.
7. Include any other interesting details about your person we would find exciting.
Attached is a list of Famous Hoosiers. Look over the list and come up with 3 ideas of
who you would like to do your project on. There will be a sign-up sheet during class to
pick your Famous Hoosier. Once that person has been chosen you may have to pick an
alternative person. If there is a person that is not on the list, please see me to get
approval before you start your project.

(Please return the bottom portion of this page by Wednesday, April 5.)

Due date: Wednesday, May 3rd (no exceptions points will be deducted for late
projects).
