State Objectives
Objective: Students will be taught about the concept of Abstraction. With the help of visual
aid(s) and teacher demonstration/guidance students will be able to grasp an understanding
of the concept of Abstraction. Students will be split into groups and given a prompt dealing
with abstraction to create a four to five, eight count movement phrase that they will perform
within the classroom.

ABCDs of strong objectives are included:

A Audience: 11th and 12th grade classroom(s).
B Behavior: Students will be placed into groups of three to demonstrate their
understanding of abstraction within dance.
C Condition: Students will be placed into groups of three to create an abstract dance
phrase, consisting of 4 to 5 eight counts of movement.
D Degree: Students will perform their dance phrase for their classmates and afterwards
discuss their progress with the concept.
Select Methods, Media, , and Materials

All methods, media, and materials needed for the lesson are listed. Give rationales why
these selected methods, media and materials are appropriate for your lesson.
1. Methods: I will start the class with an explanation of Abstraction and its connection to
movement (specifically dance). Next, I will show a video to the class of dancers utilizing the
method of abstraction within movement; the students will then be given a teacher
demonstration that will then be followed by guided practice with the class as a whole.
Students will learn the meaning of abstraction within movement, as well as, how to utilize
abstraction to create movement.

2. Media: A laptop and speaker will be utilized to provide music for the students
performances if needed. Students will also be filmed throughout their performance and
afterwards will have the opportunity to view the video to evaluate their performance. I will
assess students through their performance and discussion, in order to give them feedback.

3. Materials: A whiteboard will be utilized to write the terminology and objective for the
lesson. The terminology will be written on the board as a resource for students to look back
on throughout class. A laptop and speaker to play music if needed for student
performances.
Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods
1. Preview the materials: I do not need to preview anything before beginning the lesson.

2. Prepare the materials: Have terminology and objective written on the whiteboard; have a
television or projector setup to play the example abstraction video for students. Also
have the speaker and laptop set up to play music for a class warmup, as well as, for
students if needed for their performances.

3. Prepare the environment: The lesson will take place within a dance studio like space
with at least one wall of mirrors. The temperature should be comfortable so that
students are not too hot or too cold. Students will sit on the floor as the objective is
stated and the terminology is explained.

4. Prepare the learners: I will prepare the students by leading a warmup that deals with the
concept of Abstraction, which is the objective of the lesson.

5. Provide the learning experiences: Rubric

Require Learner Participation
I will first begin the class by stating the objective of the day, which will also be written on the
board.

Students will participate within a warmup led by me, that incorporates the objective of the
day.

The terminology will be explained to the students and an example will of Abstraction will be
shown to students through video. Following the video, a teacher led example will be given
to the students.

Students will be led through a guided practice dealing with the leaves in fall to gain an
understanding of how to create movement with the use of an abstract prompt.

The students will then be split into groups of three and will be given a prompt to inspire a
dance phrase dealing with abstract movement. The phrase must be 4 to 5 eight counts long
and have a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Students will then perform their group phrase in front of their classmates, at least two
groups at a time; while being videoed. After each performance there will be a small class
discussion on how the movements within the phrase were abstract, as well as, what other
elements students may have noticed. The class will review the video(s) of each group to
evaluate their progress

I will assess students through their performance and class discussion(s), with the use of a
rubric.
