Nitrile Rubber NBR, Buna-R Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Slide 34 , 4
(18-50% AN) Slide 36 , 10
PROPIEDADES
Buena resistencia a solventes hidrocarbonados
Muy buena resistencia a alcalis y a acidos
Limitations Resistencia Inferior al ozono, luz solar y envejecimiento natural
Pobre resistencia a solventes oxigenados
solventes, la resistencia a la abrasion y disminuye la permeabilidad a gases;

PROPIEDADES
Advantages Superior resistencia a altas temperaturas
Pobre resistencia a alcalis y acidos
elasticas a temperaturas extremas
requisito esencial 20
Usada en implantes y protesis, y en forros, sello y anillos

ELASTOMEROS TERMOPLASTICOS [2]
The PS end blocks aggregate into a separate phase and form a microdispersion within
the matrix composed of the polydiene chains
This phase separation occurs in the melt or swollen state
At RT we have a network of elastic polydiene chains held together by glassy polystyrene
microdomains
These materials thus behave as virtually crosslinked elastomers at RT, but are thermo-
plastic and fluid at elevated temperatures
The properties of the ABA triblock copolymers are dependent on and vary with the
composition
The thermoplastic elastomers can be heat-molded like thermoplastics, yet exhibit the
behavior of rubber vulcanizates at RT
These elastomers have better tensile strength than conventional vulcanizates (see page 43)
This mechanical behavior is ascribed to the regularity of the network (see the TEM image)
AND to the energy-absorbing characteristics of the PS domains, which yield and distort
under stress
Thermoplastic elastomers have also been obtained from ABA triblocks in which B =
cyclic sulfides or cyclic siloxanes
Any molecular architecture ABA where B = elastomeric and A and A are thermoplastics
should be a thermoplastic elastomer; the thermoplastic branch can also be grafted onto
an elastomeric backbone; blends of thermoplastics and elastomers are also TPEs
Other examples are [AB] n with alternating hard and soft segments; a variety of segmented
polyesters and polyurethanes with polyethers exist

ELASTOMEROS TERMOPLASTICOS [4]
In the useful temperature range of a TPE, the elastomer phase is above its Ts, the other
phase is below its Ts; the hard phase acts very much like carbon black and chemical
crosslinks, restricting the motion of the elastomer chains
Upon heating above the T s of the hard phase, the anchoring effect disappears and the
material becomes a viscous liquid; upon cooling, the rubbery behavior returns
Thus, the TPE can be processed in much the same way as the green thermoset rubber
before their vulcanization; note that the TPE does not need to be formulated like the
thermoset elastomers
TPEs are now firmly established in the rubber industry: in the mid-nineties 15% of elastomers
in the non-tire market were TPEs
Virtually all TPEs fall into one of three categories: i) block copolymers of =2 monomers
(styrene, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyamides, with isoprene or butadiene); ii) blends of
thermoplastics and elastomers; iii) elastomeric alloys with synergistic interaction between
two or more polymer systems
The styrene TPEs are still sensitive to heat, ozone and sunlight (much better if an olefin
pair as ethylene-butylene is used for the soft block)
The styrene TPEs are rated the lowest among all TPEs; hardness is 30-55 Shore D; UTS
from 500 to 4000 psi (3-28 MPa); useful service temperatures from 50C to +100C
They are resistant to polar fluids (e.g., water) but susceptible to oils, fuels, organic solvents
Typical applications are in footwear, films, tubing, reinforced hose, insulation, jackets for
electrical wire and cable, automotive and appliance applications, sealants, coatings, caulking

RESUMEN
En este capitulo hemos aprendido que:
There are many different synthetic elastomers available; their properties vary widely and
these properties can be optimized further by compounding them; an elastomer is rarely used
without additives; more in the next chapter
Elastomers are often polymerized from vinyl monomers and from dienes; the former become
saturated polymers, the latter are unsaturated
Polymerization is done in such away that a high stereoregularity is avoided, which would
increase the polymers tendency to crystallize, i.e., it would no longer be an elastomer;
example: NR vs. gutta-percha
Unsaturated elastomers can be crosslinked by sulfur or by peroxides; saturated elastomers
are crosslinked by peroxides; a small amount of diene can be added in the polymerization
process; the polymer can then be crosslinked by sulfur; example: EPDM
The unsaturated elastomers are typically sensitive to sunlight, heat, and ozone and have to be
protected; the saturated ones are much less sensitive
The non-polar elastomers are sensitive to oil, hydrocarbons and gasoline; the polar ones are
more sensitive to oxygenated solvents
The unsaturated elastomers and the polar elastomers adhere well to fabric and metal reinfor-
cing materials
There is a new class of elastomers, called thermoplastic elastomers
