The International Wushu Sanshou Dao Association (IWSD) is a vehicle for members to learn new skills and to
improve their martial arts ability. It functions as a bridge for martial artists all over the world to learn and share
their knowledge, and to develop greater camaraderie between martial artists. The IWSD Association recognizes and
encourages the uniqueness of various styles and traditions, but considers the cultivation of an individuals ability
more important than the distinction that divides one style or tradition from another. Our goal includes transcending
the boundaries between styles to allow for the integration of a highly practical and versatile system of martial skill.

W
e have been super busy at Tiger Claw. Winter is
always this way. When the kids return to school in
the fall, it means a renewed effort to get kids into Tiger Claw Legend
martial arts. With winter, theres the holidays, but V-Neck Unforms
after the holidays, its New Years resolutions and working White Trim: 11-68
off all that holiday feasting. I love the crispness in the air, Black Trim: 11-69
the greyness of winter, the smell of impending rain and snow.
Im a snowboarder so the chance to head to the mountains
for some shredding makes me very happy. The change in
seasons also helps motivate me every year. This time of year
is so important to the company for us to hit our sales goals for
the year. Its our last chance. Also, with the holiday season
beginning earlier and earlier every year, we stay busy from
fall through winter with all the extra work fulfilling orders.
This is a great challenge to face and we are thankful to our
customers for the support that we get every holiday season.

By the time this issue comes out in print, well have a holiday
section up on our website. We try to mix and match a few
things that every martial artist needs, as well as sprinkle in
style-specific items such as a Chinese broadsword or MMA
training gloves. We also throw in a few holiday accessories,
maybe a Karate ornament for the tree this year? Like any
good merchant, Tiger Claw also puts out a few new items as
well. This year we are introducing a new shin/instep and new
foot gear to go with the new vinyl gear that we launched last
year. After getting feedback from our new line, we were told
over and over that we needed to add these two items to make
our vinyl gear selection complete. Tiger Claws Red
Asian Henley
In 2016, Tiger Claw added several other new items, most Sizes: CHS - XXL
of which weve profiled here in previous issues. Were very 11-11R
pleased with the response weve gotten for our Red Asian $19.99 - $23.79
Henleys, and anticipate that these will do very well for
Chinese New Year. It is traditional to get new clothes for
the New Year, and the vibrant red of these new Henley
shirts is perfect to celebrate. The Year of the Rooster comes
early in 2017 January 28 so be sure to order those Red
Asian Henleys in time!

Our Red and Blue Clap Kickers are also popular new
items. Weve seen original Black Tiger Claw Clap Kickers
everywhere, from Taekwondo and Karate kids classes to
Press Demos for UFC. Our new Red and Blue Clap Kickers
have been eagerly received by so many practitioners that use
the original. Its the same solid-state design that delivers
a resounding clap when the strike is on target, just in new
colors. If the demand keeps growing, maybe well have to
add more colors. We added Pink to our signature Tiger Claw
Sparmaster line of protective gear and that was well received
by our ever-growing demographic of female practitioners.
Weve also upgraded several of our popular products like our
Tiger Claw Curved Leather Focus Mitt, our Action Chop,
Tigers Claw and Kickboxing gloves and our Tiger Claw

Headguard. We also introduced several new Japanese
swords: our Elite Competition Daisho (long and short
sword, sold separately), our economic Bokken with Handle
9 Ring Broadsword Wrap, and our Polypropylene Bokken. The Polypropylene
Bokken has been a top seller for all styles as they are
(Combat Steel) really tough and very affordable. We also introduced an
45-62cs improved line of Korean uniforms, our Legend V Necks,
but those probably wont be of much interest to Kung Fu
Tai Chi readers. All of our new items make great gifts.

Specific to Chinese Kung Fu, we have two new swords.

We now carry an extremely heavy 9-Ring Broadsword that
is combat steel. It weighs in at over 4 pounds and has a
blade thats more than a quarter-of-an-inch thick. Only
the most serious swordsmen and women can wield this
bad boy. We also acquired the Sword of Goujian. This is
a faithful reproduction of one of the worlds most famous
swords. The real Sword of Goujian is part of the Hubei
Provincial Museum collection. Gene Ching, our resident
sword expert, showed me how this replica was so detailed
that it even replicated the flair in the blade. He said that
many antique forgeries miss this subtle detail. We only
have a limited supply of these and I dont know if well
be able to procure more, so if you want a piece of Chinese
history, get one now before its too late.

We have also begun in earnest planning out the 25th

Anniversary Festival for Kung Fu Tai Chi magazine.
Weve toured a few facilities and Im really starting to get
excited about revealing all the stuff we are going to add to
this years historic event. Every year, the whole staff of the
magazine, as well as staff from Tiger Claw, really pitch in
for our tournament and Kung Fu Tai Chi Day. This year,
like the 20th anniversary, will require even more than that.
Family and friends from all the employees help to make
the weekend a memorable experience for all. I hope youll
join us. Its going to be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Keep an
eye on our websites for updates: KungFuMagazine.com,
TigerClawElite.com and KungFuTaiChiDay.com. There
will also be announcements on our Facebook, Twitter,
YouTube and other networks.

Support from you is the key to all this. Buying the

magazine, training with our products, and coming
Sword of Goujian to events like Tiger Claws KungFuMagazine.com
45S-57 Championships all tell us that what we are doing is a
good thing and we need to keep it going. The holidays are
a perfect time to reflect on this. Though we are super busy
and pretty stressed out, its nice to take a moment and be
thankful for the support we get from the community.B

On
August 13, 2016, the world lost one of its most
prominent exponents of Baguazhang (),
the fourth-generation lineage holder and national

passed away in Beijing at the age of 84.

Grandmaster Sun was born in 1933 in the Cheng family village

in Hebei province, the hometown of Cheng Tinghua (),
founder of Cheng Style Baguazhang. Sun received his Bagua
training from three primary teachers: Liu Ziyang (), Cheng
Yousheng (), and Cheng Youxin ().

Grandmasters love for the martial arts was clear from a young
age. As a child, Sun would spend days and evenings studying
with his teachers, continuing his practice well into the night after
everyone had long gone home. Sun maintained this rigorous In 1983, the Chinese Wushu Association elected Grandmaster

Closing Hands (heshou ): Visualize/feel the air slowly going
out of the balloon, causing your hands to gradually move inwards
toward the center, stopping when your palms are approximately the
size of your head apart. This causes your chest to contract and your
shoulder blades to expand. At the same time slowly exhale through
your nose and let your feet relax. Slightly pause.

Repeat the entire process of opening and closing slowly 10 times.

Note what you feel (muscles, tendons, bones, energy, breath, etc.),
not what you see, before, while and after doing the exercise. Keep
your intention/focus (yi) on the exercise. Nothing else!

The hands opening and extending outward is yang. The chest

expanding is yang. The chest contracting is yin. The hands closing
and contracting is yin. The shoulder blades contracting is yin. The
shoulder blades expanding is yang.

The opening and closing of the hands is all about the expansion and
contraction of qi. The shoulder blades contracting (yin) is gathering
qi. The shoulder blades expanding (yang) is releasing qi.

You must be totally relaxed when performing this exercise. The

entire process of moving qi is rooted in your yi or intention/focus.
There is no strength being used. Keep your focus/intention (yi) on
your breathing and body movements. Coordinate your breathing
with your movements. As your hands expand, inhale. When they Back view open right heel raise

As your hands expand, note if you feel any connection between the
palms and fingers of your two hands. Do they seem to connect as if
you are pulling taffy or springs apart? Do you feel qi? When your

hands contract do you notice a resistance between your hands as if
you are pushing against something? Do you feel qi? Remember this
is done very slowly.

Stage Two
Everything is exactly the same as in Stage One with the exception
that as you inhale and your hands open up (kaishou), your right heel
rises up. As you exhale and your hands come together (heshou),
your right heel returns to the ground. As your hands open up for the
second time, your left heel rises up. As your hands come together,
your left heel returns to the ground. Thus the right and left heel
alternate with the kaiheshou. Move slowly, coordinating your
breath, the movement of your chest and back, and the expansion and
contraction of your hands. Everything is guided by yi.

The heel rising up is yang while the heel descending is yin. The
process of yin and yang is now both horizontal and vertical.

Slowly repeat the entire process of opening and closing with both
the right heel and the left heel 10 times. Note what you feel before,
while and after doing the exercise. Keep your intention/focus (yi) on
the exercise. Nothing else!

Stage Three Open with left heel raise:

descends, the air of the balloon that has filled up your entire body
is released and your body contracts inward. Repeat, this time with
your left heel rising and descending.

Slowly repeat the entire process of opening and closing with both the
right heel and the left heel, and the body expanding and contracting,
10 times. Note what you feel before, while and after doing the
exercise. Keep your intention/focus (yi) on the exercise. Nothing
else!

The three stages of kaiheshou (opening and closing hands) provides

a ground for understanding and experiencing the process of yin and
yang and moving qi. You should now have a fairly good feel for the
yin and yang process while in essentially a stationary position.

Moving through Space/Time

Moving through space/time with yin and yang requires the
knowledge and experience of practicing the three stages of
kaiheshou. Having become proficient with feeling or sensing the
process of yin and yang, the practitioner can then move on to the
next level. At this level, moving forward and backward or to the
sides or angles in space/time requires a counter pull/push in the Back view of kai or open with left heel raised
opposite direction (Sun & Tam 2002, 34). The essential focal
point of position in space, movement, balance and rooting is called
kua (). Essentially this is the pelvic area where the upper body
and your legs are joined together. There are, however, various
descriptions regarding its exact location (Chen 2006, 2; Maish
(2016, 2). In Chapter Three, The Nine Essential Fundamentals for

hen taking my first Kung Fu lesson 30

W years ago, little did I realize that Kung

Fu would later help me survive a year
of intense cancer treatments and help
rebuild my life. This included a modified radical
mastectomy, a year of chemotherapy infusions, several
weeks of radiation, grueling side effects, a multitude
of medications for the side effects, permanent damage,
and increased potential for secondary cancers. I was
hospitalized for the initial surgery and twice after the
first two infusions. Cancer and its treatments are
hell. Thankfully, I survived my initial battle with an
aggressive breast cancer armed with modern medicine,
Sun style Tai Chi, and my sifus wisdom.

In the Beginning There

Was Hard
I confess. I did not appreciate the depth, complexity,
and benefits of Sun style Tai Chi until recently. The
majority of my martial arts training has been under the
tutelage of Sifu Kwong Wing Lam: Bak Siu Lum, Sun
style Tai Chi, Bagua, Xing Yi, with a little Hung Gar
for fun. Carol with Sifu Kwong Wing Lam circa 1990, by Wilson Wong

Upon my cancer diagnosis, I vowed to maintain my
Kung Fu practice. But little did I realize how severely
disabled both mentally and physically the surgery
and multitude of medications would leave me. A
daily workout regimen was simply out of the question.
During the most intense treatment period, I could
only walk a few dozen steps per day due to extreme
weakness, pain, and sickness. The modified radical
mastectomy was incredibly painful, and I lost mobility
in my right shoulder. I couldnt even brush my teeth
with my right hand. I had to sleep sitting up for weeks
due to the pain. Though naturally very flexible, after
the initial chemotherapy infusion I could no longer
touch my toes. Memory loss (chemo brain or cancer
treatment-related cognitive impairment) hit hard
from the drugs and trauma. I forgot the majority of
the Kung Fu sets as well as many other things that
were important to me. Peripheral neuropathy (nerve
damage to the limbs) made movement hazardous since
I couldnt feel if I was damaging myself. Even several
months after completing the most difficult treatment, I
lost my toe nails from trying to exercise. I was hardly
able to eat anything for the first ten days out of every
three weeks for the first half a year of treatment. My
swords began collecting dust and spider webs. I
missed my Kung Fu and my youth.
Carol with Sun Jianyun (daughter of Sun Lutang), Beijing, 1998,
by Raymond Wong

Early in my martial arts education, I enjoyed

competing and training in Jinan, China, and later
made a pilgrimage to Shaolin Temple and participated
in various Shaolin seminars in the San Francisco Bay
Area. The external martial arts excited and energized
me. For many years, I had the honor of teaching Bak
Siu Lum under Sifu Wing Lam with an exceptional
group of individuals. Some of my happiest times
were at the kwoon with my Kung Fu brothers and
sisters learning about Kung Fu and life. Although
fortunate to have spent time with Sun Jianyun in
Beijing (a precious memory not only because she was
my grandmaster, but because she was also a super-
sweet lady), I preferred fast and high kicks and fast
swordplay to quiet Tai Chi. Only now do I realize
that it was foolish not to invest in serious Sun style
Tai Chi training in my youth as Sifu encouraged us.

The Enemy Within

There are hundreds of types of cancer and thousands of
combinations of chemotherapies, radiation therapies,
surgeries, and other treatments, as well as a broad
spectrum of individual reactions to the same treatment
and doses. Some patients find their treatments
tolerable. For others, treatment is devastating for the Carol doing Bagua at the hospital around her infusion pump stand,

Eat Bitter
To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning
in the suffering. Friedrich Nietzsche

In a martial art sense, the concept of Eat Bitter

means practicing very hard, enduring both the mental
and physical hardships. Sadly, not all cancer patients
eat bitter and adhere to the challenging treatment
regimens due to the horrific side effects. I credit
integration of Kung Fu into my life for helping me to
willingly take horrific treatments for a year. Many
times it was difficult to believe that losing a body part
and getting painful infusions of toxic chemicals every
three weeks for a year would extend my life and fight
the cancer. Sometimes patients survive the cancer
but die from the treatments. However, I trusted the
knowledge of legitimate researchers as I trust Sifus
wisdom, so I willingly ate a lot of bitter to gain cancer-
free time.

Nandu (difficulty movements acrobatic or
gymnastic moves upon which Wushu is judged )
is a requirement of the sport. You cannot throw away the
martial essence even though athletes must show ability. Its
easier to discriminate with nandu. But there still must be elements
of offense and defense. It should still include this essence. The
competition shows athletic ability but nandu must harmonize with
this martial core. If its just nandu, its just gymnastics. One-third
of any Modern Wushu competition form is nandu now. The trend is
moving away from the core. Now Dao is just about speed and height.
Traditional is too difficult. The Wushu leaders recognize this trend
and are working towards requiring more traditional core movements.

China is eager to get a sport into the Olympics. It has been struggling
with Modern Wushu since its inception, but when it failed to get
in for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, many lost hope. Now there is a
new push to promote Taijiquan through tournaments. While this
is not necessarily an Olympic objective, Chinas perspective on
it is understandable. Taiji is the most widely practiced martial
art in the world and it continues to grow globally. However,
the notion of Olympic Taiji will likely be absurd in the eyes of
westerners as they pigeonhole it as a meditative practice, not a
martial art. Nevertheless, there are now two international-level
championships for Taijiquan in China, the biannual World Wushu
Championships which contain the Modern Wushu divisions
of Taijiquan and Taijijian and a newly organized international
championship that is exclusively for Taijiquan. Zhao explains,
The form regulations are the same, more or less. Holding a single
Taiji World Championship allows the addition of more content.
The different styles of Taiji can be separated. There is only one
zishen division that has nandu. The other separate divisions dont
require nandu. They are based upon the compulsory routines within
the individual styles like Chen, Yang, and so on.

The next Olympics will be held in Tokyo in 2020 and Karate

has already been approved to be a new Olympic event there.
Both Karate and Modern Wushu have been classified as
International Federations by the International Olympic
Committee for years now; this status is a necessary step to
make a bid to be in the running to be a new sport. Zhao reflects
on what this means for Chinese martial arts. We standardized
Modern Wushu to get it into the Olympics. Why isnt Wushu
in yet? Well, personally, Im not emotional about it. I dont
think its quite ready yet. The rules and regulations need a little
more time to mature. As for Karate, I have no feelings about
that either. They did a lot of work. And it helps that Tokyo
is the host city. In Chinese martial arts, there are so many
different voices. Traditional or modern, we should all have the
same goal, not just criticism. B

H
ook swords are an advanced weapon taught in many northern styles.
Kung Fu instructors usually teach this weapon after a student had
learned the saber, or sometimes after a student has learned each
of the four basic weapons (saber, staff,
spear, and straight sword). A student
might also learn the hooks in place of, or
addition to, the double sabers.

Just as many southern styles such as Hung Ga (), Choy Lee Fut
(), and Wing Chun () have butterfly knives (yi ji seung dou
) in their repertoire, many northern styles have hook swords; and
like butterfly knives, hook swords are almost always used in paired
fashion. A few styles have a single hook sword set, the moves being
used in the event that one loses one of the hooks, or, as auxiliary to
another weapon, such as the long chain. In the latter case, one can use
the hook sword for defense, and the chain to flail at the opponent from
a distance. Southern styles use butterfly knives as a short weapon, and
they typically hold the butterfly knives against their forearms and under
their sleeves to conceal the weapon; hook swords (not easily concealed)
are a combination of short, medium, and long range weapons.

Ancient China had long pole-arms (and even some straight swords)
with hooks on the end, so it's not surprising that someone at some
point would devise a sword-like weapon ending in a hook. Long
pole-arms with hooks at the end (in addition to the spear tip) have
a multitude of uses. They could be used to slice the legs of horses,
pull cavalry men off their horses, hook or pull away short weapons
(such as swords and sabers) or hook other long weapons.

Although hook swords are a unique weapon, one must also understand
that a pair of hook swords is similar to a pair of double straight swords,
albeit with more cutting points and edges. Perhaps the hook sword
crescent moon blades near the handles were inspired or influenced by
Baguazhangs famous deer horn or antler knives (luk gok dou
). This would not be surprising since the origin of Baguazhang ()
and its weaponry also date to sometime in the late 1800s. Perhaps one
weapon led to the other, and the popularity of one may have increased
the popularity of the other. At
close range, both weapons have
common methods of use.

and optimal at close range, they are also effective against long and short-range
weapons because they are easy to manipulate. Because deer horn knives are
sharp all around, an adversary would find it difficult to escape their cutting
edges, especially in the practiced hands of a Baguazhang adept.

The distinctive part of hook swords are, obviously, the hooks at the end of the
swords. Another unique feature is the crescent moon-shaped blades near the
handles. At the end protruding from the base is another point, and with this
one can stab an opponent. At the far end near the hook, some hook swords
have a sharp, protruding (stabbing) point, while some only have the hooks, thus
leading to a rounded tip instead of a pointed tip. All sides of hook swords,
other than the area near the handle, are sharp, thus making for a formidable
weapon. This cuts both ways (yes!), because not only do the sharp sides make
the weapon deadly against an opponent, the wielder must also take care not to
injure himself. Besides their unique
capabilities, hook swords
Most who learn this weapon cut themselves during practice, either on the have characteristics similar

The hooks are sometimes called tiger head hooks
(fu tau gau ) or, more simply, double hooks
(seung gau ), as they are rarely used singly.
Though some may think them of ancient origin (misled
by their frequent appearance in Chinese literature,
modern movies, and other popular culture), most
scholars date them only to the late 1800s, or the late
Qing Period, when they were first depicted in weapons
manuals. Some scholars note that something akin
to hook swords are mentioned (but not depicted) in a
martial treatise of the mid-1500s (i.e., during the Ming
Dynasty). But it is not clear what hook swords
meant to the writers of long ago. Although hook
swords appear in the romantic literature of wuxia
novels, references made to them date only from the
middle of the Ming Dynasty, or possibly the late Qing
period. There is no known record of these weapons
in early Chinese military manuals. Even Water
Margin (seui wu chyun ), written in the 14th
century and noted for its many heroes with distinctive
weapons, makes no mention of hook swords.

The absence of hook swords in military manuals

suggests they were weapons of personal, or civilian,
defense. There are many reasons why hook swords
may not have been useful in the military. Being sharp
all around, they could pose a threat to ones own
comrades in the midst of heavy fighting. Since they're
used in paired fashion, this would not allow one to
hold a shield, something extremely important in mass
warfare. Defense against ancient missile attacks
(i.e., arrows, rocks and such) would be difficult with
just hook swords.

Hook swords, due to their all-around sharp surfaces,

are not easily transported or carried. Most Kung Fu
practitioners today do not have scabbards for their
hook swords; instead, they wrap them in leather and
carry them on the back. For these reasons, one can see
why hook swords were not used in mass warfare.

In martial culture, hook swords play a role similar to

that of the three-sectional staff, a lethal weapon when
wielded by an expert, but cumbersome and awkward
in the hands of an inexperienced user. Although the
hooks were reputedly devised to counter a spear, unless
one practices diligently, snaring a fast-flicking spear

Continued from page 62: The Hook Swords
When the great northern Baguazhang master Fu Zhensong
() fought off bandits threatening his village at the turn
of the century, he used a heavy iron spear. It should come as no
surprise that his famous Four-Faced or Four-Sided spear
form (sei gok mau ) was basic and very straightforward,
not at all flashy. Fu Zhensong was also well-known for his
single broadsword set, also simple and basic because his
broadsword was tall and extremely heavy. Real-world self-
defense techniques are typically straightforward, and lacking in
the aesthetic appeal necessary for performance. These methods
are the antithesis of modern-day Wushu.

Some say that hook swords were developed as a counter to the

spear (cheung ) the spear being the King of Weapons."
Most applications involve trapping the spear (or any other
weapon) with one hook sword and then slicing at the opponent
with the other. If one had a double saber, or just a single saber,
one could deflect the spear, but not capture it. The hook sword
can also slash in the manner of a saber, albeit not as well
because of the shape of the blade. Finally, its crescent-moon
guard can be used offensively to cut and scrape at an opponent
even while parrying and deflecting blows. Hook blades can
be used as a protective shield, or to slice at the opponent.
Crescent moon blades work in the same way as Bagua Deer
Horn Knives. The beauty of hook swords is that they are
capable at long-range as well as short-range.

The stabbing point near the handle at the end of the hook sword
gives the wielder more options. While cutting and scraping the
opponent with the crescent moon guard, use the end point like a
short dagger all brought into play with the mere twist of ones
wrist. If one can parry a strike at long-range using the hook
end, do so; if the opponent gets closer, parry with the crescent
moon guards. Against a single chainwhip, catch and deflect
the chain with one hook sword while cutting the opponent with
the other in whatever way is effective. This is the typical
application of any paired weapon.

Most applications involve clearing and hooking, then striking.

If the opponent stabs forward with a straight sword, For clearing, use the body of the sword or the hook at the end;
parry it with the crescent moon guard, and slice with for striking, use the blade or the crescent moon of the other hook

for a strong, glancing (or cutting) swipe at the opponents

Traditional Kung Fu has many weapon sparring sets,

Bare-handed Practice: Leg Twisting

Supine your body with hands open. Your right leg does counterclockwise twisting from right to left. When your right leg moves above your head,
your left leg begins to twist. Land your right leg on your right; your left leg moves above your right leg to finish its circle and also lands. Open your
legs about 140 degrees and sit upright, with hands on the floor at your sides. Practice leg twisting repetitively to increase the twisting speed and
the strength of your waist and abdomen. You can practice both sides at the same time; the left side movements are the same but in the opposite
direction.

Bare-handed Practice: Arms Supporting and Suspending
Use your arms to support your body, keeping your waist and hips away from the floor. Open your legs about 130 degrees with
toes cocked and hanging in the air. Turn your right leg to the right and land; then the left leg lands. Your legs should be at about a
140-degree angle after landing, and your hands are on the floor at your sides. Practice your legs in turn. The left side movements
are the same but in the opposite direction.

Bare-handed Practice: Rolling

Sit straight with the soles of your feet facing each other and grip your toes firmly with your
hands. Turn your body downward to the left, and land with the outer side of your left leg,
then your left shoulder, and then roll up naturally. Practice both sides repetitively to master
the rolling methods. The right side movements are the same but in the opposite direction.

Instrument-aided Practice: Rope Replacement

To eliminate fears of beating yourself in the practice process, you can start with soft rope instead of using the double whip chain.
Remember to make two to three knots at the end of the rope to add weight, so there is centrifugal force when you sweep the
ropes. If you make a mistake and hit yourself with the rope, it wont be painful. This will help you concentrate on the practice, and
overcome the psychological barriers.

and Qi Xin must have learned Tongbiquan around
18301840. According to the manuscripts of the Shi

Qi Xin learned from Master Lu Yunqing, not from
Qie. Why would Qi have neglected to write the name

is just because they were already a famous clan of martial artists

with spear techniques, and Lu Yunqing was probably one of their
martial arts friends, so the Qi had to have their own family
branch of martial arts. They later divided clans of the 24, with
Qi style in Beijing taking on a different evolution, mixing many
other techniques from the Shaolin and spear principles in their
Tongbiquan practice and theory. In the Qi family manuscripts, it
is said that Master Qie taught to the Qi clan the 24 forms of
Tongbiquan called Xinji Tongbiquan ().

However, perhaps they learned Lu Yunqings 24 forms of Tongbiquan

and modified and expanded it to 108
techniques (and more), including the best
methods they knew about Shaolin boxing
and the principles of the spear in fighting.
Compared to the 24 forms, the Qi familys
Tongbiquan has much more straightforward
movements, like the spear techniques, rather than long
circular openings of the arms as in the 24 style. Some people argue
that the Tongbi school of Qi Xin is the ancient branch (Laoqipai
), with larger movements, as opposed to Qi Taichangs little
branch (Xiaoqipai ) with its smaller movements, perhaps
modified with spear principles. However, this is not very important
to practitioners, who practice both big and small movements.
Whoever doesnt understand the principle of big and small together
has limited comprehension of Tongbiquan.

Another person who joined the Qi clan and taught them

broadsword and boxing techniques was a certain Ma () from
Henan province. But here again we dont know much about him,
just that he helped to improve the composite martial arts of the Qi
family. The son of Qi Taichang, Qi Shun ( ?1895 ), became
the third inheritor of the family style, but the one with very strong
martial arts skills who would carry on the teachings was Chen
Qing. Chen Qing, nicknamed Flying Knives (feidao ), was
a master at throwing knives and had high skills in Tongbiquan.

Many other skillful martial artists emerged from the Qi familys

Tongbiquan school, all of them already versed in various Shaolin
boxing styles. The third generation of disciples spread the style in

FEBRUARY 2017 KUNG FU B TAI CHI 79

By Gene Ching with Gigi Oh

I
can freeze an opponent with a strike, just like
in the books and movies. So claims Master
Wang Jianmin, a proponent of a unique style
of Kung Fu that propounds this legendary
power. Once I freeze them, I must use special points
to release them or permanent damage could occur.

To be able to freeze or even kill with an acupoint

strike has been a longstanding myth of the martial arts. The
so-called Death Touch has captivated the imaginations of martial
artists, movie buffs and fantasy book fans for years. It is an intrinsically
appealing concept a secret knowledge of the human body so powerful that
when tapped it disrupts the flow of qi enough to incapacitate someone. But
is it real?

The Death Touch

The Death Touch is an English label. In America, it is more commonly
known by the Cantonese term Dim Mak (). Cantonese is the
language that most early immigrant Kung Fu masters spoke when they
first arrived in the United States over a half century ago, so this
dialect takes precedence. In todays more dominant Mandarin
dialect, the word is Dianmai. Dianmai (or Dim Mak) doesnt
translate as death touch. Dian means point or dot;
mai means vessels, arteries or veins. It was Count
Dante, a notorious figure in American martial arts history, who
first popularized Dim Mak as the Death Touch. Born as John
Keehan (19391975), Dante promoted himself as the Deadliest Man
Alive. He was a Karate Black Belt and active in full-contact Karate
tournaments in the early 60s, but then broke from convention, legally
changed his name and began claiming to have killed opponents in secret
death matches before crowds of thousands in China and Thailand.
Dante took out full-page ads in comic books to sell his instructional
booklet Worlds Deadliest Fighting Secrets along with membership to
an organization he founded called the Black Dragon Fighting Society.
The ads read, An expert at DIM MAK could easily kill many Judo,
Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, and Gung Fu experts at one time with
only finger-tip pressure using his murderous POISON HAND
WEAPONS. Dante came under scrutiny later in life and was
involved in several legal battle, but was never convicted. The
Black Dragon Fighting Society is still going.

Whatever the case with Count Dante, he certainly wasnt first

to coin the term Dim Mak. The concept derives from Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM). The Yellow Emperors Classic
of Internal Medicine (circa 100 BCE Huangdi Neijing
) is one of the earliest medical texts in the world. It established
the foundation of TCM, the notion of qi flow, and the practice of
acupuncture. In TCM, health is defined by qi flow. When there are
blockages to qi flow, illness arises. Acupuncture is believed to remedy
this by stimulating the channels of qi to flow properly. If qi flow can be
stimulated, it is logical that it can also be disrupted. But qi flow is complex,
governed by cosmological forces, so the hour of the day affects when qi might
be active in a particular organ. Consequently, Dianmai is often described as a
sophisticated system where esoteric points must be struck at specific hours
to be effective. This system is allegedly so cumbersome that only a few can
ever master it. Not only does this shroud the practice in mystery, it makes for
a convenient excuse for why Dim Mak is never seen in public.

Qing Dynasty (16441912 CE) or later

S
ome liberty is being taken with the name of this pair of hooks. Hook swords are
traditionally called Tiger Head Hooks (hu tao gou ) but this pair is engraved
with spotted cats, not striped cats, so leopard is more
distinctive. Both hooks bear six engraved leopards on each side:
three on the blade, two on the crescent-moon blade, and one on
the end spike. The leopard is a common symbol in the Chinese
martial arts for speed and bravery. It was the rank insignia for
3rd grade Imperial military officers during the late Qing.

The design of these weapons is a classic example of

traditional Tiger Head Hooks, although it is notable
that the crescent-moon knuckle guard is slightly
larger than most modern examples. Note
also that the hooks arent completely
symmetrical, although this is likely an
artifact of their handmade craftsmanship
instead of some practical martial device. The handles
have a twisted wrap that might be original. The
end spike has an elegant flair. The weapons are
tempered steel and have excellent balance. All the
edges are sharp. There is battle fatigue in the
appropriate places, particularly notches on the
outside forward guard and the adjacent forte,
so it is likely that these hooks saw use, but
whether that was for actual combat or
Kung Fu practice, it is impossible to
say.B

FEBRUARY 2017 KUNG FU B TAI CHI 97

KUNG FU WISDOM

De Zhong
By Hu Wanbao

De ( 2nd tone) means attain or acquire. Zhong ( 4th tone) means masses or multitude. These two characters
evoke a Confucian teaching By gaining the people, the kingdom is gained; by losing the people, the kingdom is lost
(de zhong de tian xia; shi zhong shi tian xia ). It expresses a wish for popular success of
Kung Fu Tai Chi magazine.

This piece was commissioned by Grandmaster Wang Peikun () and his wife Zeng
Meiying () as a gift for Kung Fu Tai Chis Publisher, Gigi Oh. Grandmaster Wang
holds the highest martial rank that China awards, 9th duan. His wife holds an 8th duan.
The piece was painted by renowned calligrapher Hu Wanbao (). The De Zhong
characters are presented twice: in the center, they are done in the ancient jiagu wen ()
script then again to the right, in smaller contemporary calligraphy. Jiagu wen is known in
English as oracle bone script. This is the earliest known form of Chinese calligraphy. It
was written on animal bones and turtle shells for fortune telling in the late 2nd millennium
BCE.
