Introduction

1 Introduction
1.1 Presentation of the Exercises
The purpose of these exercises is to build two simple MIKE FLOOD models going through
the steps of creating, running and displaying the results of a simple, linked URBAN 1D
and 2D flood models using the flexible mesh.

1.2 Required Data

The available data for this exercise include:
A DEM file containing topographic data for the area of interest (data.xyz)

A file containing the buildings in the area (buildings.xyz)

A grid of the model area (topo_M21_basecase1-2wlandvaluesAtHouses.dfs2)

An existing MIKE URBAN model

Check to make sure you have all of these files before you start.

Exercise 1: Building the Mesh

2 Exercise 1: Building the Mesh

The aim of the present exercise is to construct the base mesh used for the remainder of
the exercise.

2.1 Creating a New MIKE Zero Project

The first step in creating a new model is to create a MIKE Zero project:

1. Start the mesh editor from Start > Programs > MIKE BY DHI 20xx > MIKE Zero. This
will load the MIKE Zero modelling platform from which you can create or open MIKE
11, MIKE 21 and MIKE FLOOD models.

2. From the MIKE Zero window select File/New>Project from template. The following
New Project dialogue will appear.

3. In the Project Type list, select the General Project Type, and in the Templates list,
select the General item. Change the location of the project to your training exercise
folder.

3
MIKE FLOOD FM

4. Fill in the Project Name (FMUrban, for example) and the Client Name (your
organisation) as indicated in the dialogue and then click the [OK] button to create the
project folder. The folder structure of the selected
project template is listed under the Project Explorer
panel on the right-hand side of the MIKE Zero window.
This panel provides you with an easily accessible
overview of the project and the files associated with
the project.

5. Copy all exercise data to the folder of External Data by

right clicking on this folder and choosing Add existing
files and then browse to the files provided for this
exercise and add the files to the folder. Alternatively,
you can simply copy all exercise data to this folder in
Windows Explorer.

6. Under the folder of Model, create a folder named

MIKE21FM by right clicking on the folder Model,
selecting Add Folder and then entering the above
name.

7. Similarly, under the Results folder, create a folder

named MIKE 21 FM

2.2 Setting up the mesh base model

2.2.1 Creating the mdf File

1. Open a new mesh generator file (*.mdf) by right-clicking on the MIKE21FM folder in
the Project Explorer, choosing Add New File and then navigating to the MIKE Zero
page of the New File dialogue that opens up . Double click on Mesh generator
(.mdf) to create the new file.

2. Select UTM30 for the workspace projection. Save the mesh generation file under the
MIKE21FM folder as meshgenerator.mdf.

2.2.2 Importing topographical data

1. Copy the topgraphical data stored in the file data.xyz . The data points are also in
UTM30 projection. Note remember to set the projection when importing the data
in the mesh generator through the manage scatter data menu.

2. Once the data is imported zoom to the extent of the data by clicking the View menu
and selecting the appropriate menu item.

3. You may pick the zoomed view as the extent of your work space through the menu
Options -> workspace -> pick current view.

4. The working area is given by a rectangular area with the following coordinates

4 Model Setup (MIKE URBAN + MIKE 21 FM) - DHI

Exercise 1: Building the Mesh

(3.75,378.75) (168.75,378.75)

(3.75,3.75) (168.75,3.75)

5. You define the working area by drawing a rectangle around the imported data. Using
the tool

6. Subsequently you adjust each corner by activating the selection tool

And right click on each corner to set the properties of the vertex.

7. Once you have adjusted the coordinates you can generate the mesh. The latter is
done through the Mesh menu.

8. The next step is to interpolate the scatter data onto the mesh nodes. Remember z-
values in the mesh are given at the nodal points. Interpolation is done through the
appropriate item under mesh menu.

9. Once the mesh has been interpolated, you may select to no longer display the
scatter data. This may be done under the manage scatter data menu

5

Your mesh should look something like this

10. Finally, the mesh is to be exported to a format which may be consumed by the MIKE
21 FM model. The mesh is exported as a *.mesh file which is a text format. Save the
mesh as FirstMesh.mesh.

Exercise 1: Building the Mesh

2.2.3 Creating the MIKE 21 FM set-up

The next phase of the exercise deals setting up the MIKE 21 FM model.

1. Create a new MIKE 21 Flow Model FM model through the new file menu by right
clicking on the MIKE21FM folder in the project view. Name the file
MIKE21FMsetup.m21fm and save the file

2. Select the newly created mesh file for the domain.

3. Define a 2D output for the set-up.

4. Run the simulation to ensure that the model runs.

2.2.4 Inclusion of rain in model

The system is rainfall driven, which ultimately will generate runoff, which will be conveyed
out of the area through collection system. The rainfall event to be modelled is shown
below

The rainfall series is to be created using the time series tools within MIKE Zero.

1. Create a new time series file in the folder external data. The time series has the
following properties

Start time: 25/4-2004 00:00:00

Number of time steps: 6
Time step: 1 hour
Item name: rain
Item type: precipitation rate
Unit: mm/day
Peak value: 75 mm/day

7
MIKE FLOOD FM

2. Save the file as rainPrep.dfs0

3. Apply the rain uniformly to the whole area of the MIKE 21 FM model.

4. Run the model.

5. View the results.

6. Are you seeing any inundation?

7. Create an additional item in the time series which is 4 times as intense as the
existing item.

8. Apply this to the model and run again.

9. Evaluate the results

10. Why isnt the flooding showing up dramatically?

11. Adjust the flooding and drying values:

2.2.5 Removing the buildings from the topography

The buildings in the area are defined by some polygons. These buildings are to be
removed from the set-up

1. In the mesh generator delete the mesh

2. Import the file buildings.xyz as a boundary file

3. Inspect the imported data to ensure that the polygons are omitted from the mesh

4. Generate the mesh

5. Interpolate the scatter data onto the mesh

6. Save the mesh as triangleNoBuildings.mesh

7. Use the newly generated mesh as basis for another run of the simulation

8 Model Setup (MIKE URBAN + MIKE 21 FM) - DHI

Exercise 1: Building the Mesh

2.2.6 Create a mesh from a dfs2 file

In this exercise, you will generate mesh from a grid file. To do this you will use the Mesh
converter which is located in the MIKE Zero toolbox

1. Load the file topo_M21_basecase1-2wlandvaluesAtHouses.dfs2 into the external

data folder in your project

2. Create a new mikeZero toolbox file in the folder MIKE21FM

3. The setup name is WatervilleConversion

4. Select a dfs2 as file format

5. Browse for the dfs2 file loaded into the mike21fm folder

6. Select quadrilateral as type of elements

7. For the output set the file name to meshversionQuads.mesh

8. Add the file to the mike21fm folder

9. Use the newly generated file as the basis for another simulation.

10. Note that the simulation is beyond what can be done during this exercise
