UNDERGRADUATE REGISTRATION PROCESS
Students with a financial or Dean of Students hold will not be able to register.
Students need to see their faculty advisor prior to registration to discuss course selection and to receive their PIN.Your faculty advisor is listed
on your degree evaluation.
Students are NOT excused from class to register. This includes cutting class or leaving class early.
Online registration will proceed by student class attribute.
For full time students, class attributes are determined by their anticipated year of graduation:

Senior (ASR) Class of 2017

Junior (AJR) Class of 2018
Sophomore (ASO) Class of 2019
Freshman (AFR) Class of 2020

For part time matriculated students, class attributes are determined as follows, by the number of credits earned and in progress:
College of Arts & Sciences, School of Engineering Egan School
Dolan School of Business, (except Computer of Nursing
SOE Computer Science majors Science majors)
Senior (ASR) 90+ 92+ 99+
Junior (AJR) 60-89 60-91 64-98
Sophomore (ASO) 25-59 27-59 28-63
Freshman (AFR) 0-24 0-26 0-27

For example, a part time DSB student with 54 earned credits who is currently enrolled in 9 credits would be considered a junior for
registration purposes, with a total of 63 credits.

Students will register online in alphabetical groupings beginning at 10:50am on their designated day. Spring in-season varsity athletes will
precede the alphabetical groupings, starting at 8:45am.

Students will register for major, minor, core, and elective courses on their class registration day and are limited to a maximum of 20 credits.

The online registration system will be active for each class until 11:59pm. Then the students online registration access will be turned off until
Monday, November 28, when add/drop begins.

There will be one day between each class registration for departments to review registrations and for students who missed their registration to
register in person in the Registrars Office.

Most courses will be open during the online registration period. Some departments (with courses that have specific populations) may
incrementally increase the maximum number of spaces in some of their courses by class.

The University reserves the right to cancel courses for which there are insufficient registration or change time codes or professors as deemed
necessary.

If you choose to drop a class and later change your mind, or if you are removed for non-payment, you will not be guaranteed a place in the
same class.

4
UNDERGRADUATE REGISTRATION PROCESS
Automatic Rollover Courses
Automatic Rollover Courses are full-year course sequences that continue from the Fall semester to the Spring semester, typically with the same
professor and the same time code. Everyone in the class is rolled. If you wish to change your rollover course, you may change it during your
registration period on a space available basis. Department Chairs can make changes in rollovers as necessary. Professors will announce specifics in
class concerning whether their class is a rollover for Spring and what the rollover will be.
Note: If you have a financial or Dean of Students hold at the time rollovers are processed, you will not be rolled into the next class in the
sequence.

The following courses are automatic rollovers:

BI 0107-0108 (lecture and lab)
CH 0111-0112 (lecture only)
EC 0011-0012
EN 0011-0012
MA 0145-0146
MA 0171-0172
Modern Languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish
0110-0111
0210-0211
PS 0115-0116 (lecture and lab)

Independent Study
Independent studies are available in most majors and programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students wishing to pursue an intensive
research or other academic experience must consult first with a sponsoring faculty member.

Internships
Internships provide the opportunity for practical experience in a career field related to a students major. Most departments and programs in the
College of Arts and Sciences offer credit for internships in appropriate agencies and business firms in Fairfield, nearby communities, as well as
New York City and New Haven. Majors who wish to take advantage of these opportunities should consult their department chair or program
internship coordinator about eligibility requirements and other details.

Please visit fairfield.edu/internships for more information.

Online Courses
All full-time students classified as Juniors and Seniors are eligible to enroll in one online course for the Spring 2017 semester without needing
prior Deans Office approval.

Please be aware that online courses are condensed (typically only 7 weeks in duration) and therefore rigorous. Online courses often have
irregular start and end dates (sometimes beginning at the halfway point of the semester). As with semester-long lecture-based courses, class
enrollment is firmly capped, and availability for full-time Juniors and Seniors is limited.

Note: The one-course online maximum per semester for full-time students will be strictly enforced. Any full-time student who registers
for more than one online course for the fall semester will be automatically dropped from ALL online courses. Further, the
student will not be permitted to register for additional courses until November 28, after all undergraduates have registered.

5
UNDERGRADUATE REGISTRATION PROCESS
Waitlist Courses
The waitlist for courses will be turned on at the beginning of online registration, except for courses with maximums that are increased
incrementally.

When a space opens up in a class, the first student on the waitlist will be notified via their student Gmail account, with instructions on how
to register for the waitlisted class. They will have 24 hours from the time the email is sent to register for the class. If there is a
conflict in their schedule, they will have to resolve that issue before registering for the waitlisted class. If they fail to register for the class by the
deadline stated in the email, they will be removed from the waitlist for that class.

The use of the waitlists and the process of notifying students will run from Monday, November 28 through Friday, January 13. During this
period, the Registrars Office will not honor write-ins from faculty for closed courses. The electronic waitlist will be the only mechanism for
filling available openings in closed courses. After January 13, students may register for classes with open seats on a first come, first serve basis.
During the Add/Drop period of January 17-23, the Registrar will accept write-ins from faculty for closed courses.

Degree Evaluation on the Web: Degree Works

All matriculated undergraduate students have a degree evaluation online, showing the requirements of their program, including core, majors, and
minors. To run a degree evaluation on my.fairfield.edu:

1) Go to the Student Home page on my.Fairfield

2) Click on the blue button with the graduation cap that says Degree Eval Degree Eval

This will take you directly to your degree evaluation.

Students should print a degree evaluation and bring it with them when they meet with their advisor, or be ready to display it
on their personal laptop or tablet device.

Directions for Banner XE Online Registration System

The student registration system is accessed through my.fairfield.edu. Every student has an account on this system.
If a student needs assistance with their NetID or password, they should contact the ITS Help Desk at 203-254-4069.

After logging in to my.fairfield.edu, click on the Plan Ahead / Register icon.

Please visit fairfield.edu/xe-registration for an overview and highlights of the new registration system.

Remember to add labs when necessary. If a student does not have a computer with Internet capabilities, they can use one in the computer
labs, the library, or the Dolan School of Business. If a student needs assistance with registration, they should contact the Registrars Office at 203-
254-4288. They SHOULD NOT call the Help Desk.

Remember, any student with a Financial or Dean of Students hold will not be allowed to register.

SERVICE LEARNING
SPRING 2017 COURSES
Service Learning is a kind of experiential education that connects classroom learning with community service. In collaboration with commu-
nity organizations, students learn about and apply tools of the academic discipline and specific course concepts in their service experiences.
This combination enhances academic learning and civic awareness while also providing a meaningful service to and with the community.
Course credit and grading are for the learning not for the service. The service activities for the course are similar to the readings, lectures, class
discussions and other assignmentsall are contexts for student learning.

Courses will appear with the following notation in the right-hand column of the schedule of classes: SerL or SerL Option
SerL: All students in the course are required to participate in service learning.
SerL Option: Students have a choice to participate in service learning as a final project and/or in lieu of another comparable project.
ISL: The course includes a required or optional international travel, immersion, and/or service experience.

AY 0390A: Special Topics: Introduction to Archaeology

This course is an introduction to the theory, methods and development of archaeology. Students will begin with a study of the origin of the discipline and
the development of professional archaeology in relation to three disciplines (anthropology, history and the classics). Contemporary professional archaeological
practice stands in stark contrast to fantastic misconceptions of popular culture. We will look at important case studies from around the world to understand how
archaeology informs our concept of the past.

BI 0399J: Capstone: Pathophysiology of Bone

This seminar will focus on the biochemistry and physiology of human bone and cartilage. Emphasis will be placed on the normal development and healing of
these tissues along with an introduction to common skeletal tissue disorders such as osteoporosis and arthritis. Students will be expected to analyze and present
scientific literature while integrating the material with basic knowledge acquired from previous courses. Prerequisites: BI 0170, BI 0171, BI 0172, one course
from the Physiology Block, senior standing.

CL/HI 0224: Byzantine World

This course is an introduction to political and social history of Byzantine Empire. It also highlights Byzantiums role as a bridge between Greco-Roman antiquity
and modern European civilization. Course lectures will cover Byzantiums origins in the eastern half of the Roman Empire, Byzantiums middle period as a
major Mediterranean power, and its late period as an increasingly shrinking city-state. The course will also introduce students to some of the major Byzantine
historians and to methods of analysis using these sources, and train students to form historical arguments based on these analyses.

CO 0334: Interracial Communication

This course explores current trends in literature on the topics of race relations, communication styles and patterns, communication theory, and the social
construction of race along with its influence on how individuals from different races communicate. Throughout the course, up-to-date issues that surface locally
and nationally in the media that illustrate the relevance of improved interracial communication will be addressed through class discussion and linked to course
assignments. Using case studies to explore interracial exchanges in close relationships, at the workplace, and reflected in social media, students will link theory
with practical applications in an effort to better understand interracial communication.

EE 0386: Fault Analysis in Power Systems

This course covers three types of faults in electrical power grids: open lines, lines shorted to ground, and lines shorted to each other. Methods of locating faults
are covered along with an analysis of the effects of such faults. Methods of protection and fault isolation are also covered. Prerequisite: EE 0385.

EG 0260: Robots
Introductory course in robotics develops understanding of how robotic systems integrate sensors, actuators, and control systems to achieve specific goals.
Principles of autonomy, programming, wireless communications, sensor applications, mechatronics, electrical power, electric motors, pneumatics, structure,
and locomotion will be understood and applied. Design of robotic subsystems will utilize multiple areas of knowledge. The course will involve application of
statistical analysis to quantify robot performance. Service learning is an integral part of the course. All participants will participate in weekly mentoring of a youth
robotics competition team to put into practice the principles learned in class, and to learn through community interaction from other students using robots to
accomplish different feats. Prerequisite: PS 0115.

EN 0145: King Arthur

A survey of the literature of the legend of Arthur, from ancient Celtic fragments and references to medieval chivalric romances, and on to modern
reinterpretations in poems, novels, and film. Particular focus on the romances of Marie de France, Chrtien de Troyes, Sir Thomas Malory, and the anonymous
author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Attention to such themes as: the construction of nationality; the tension between the individual and culture; the
stylized representation of gender and class; the interplay of reality and fantasy; theories of authorship and audience; connections to history-writing and to other
literary genres. Prerequisites: EN 0011 and EN 0012.

HI 0278: A Cultural History of Chinas Relations with the United States

International relations are often conceptualized as power rivalry, stressing conflicts and collaboration among nations in international politics and political
economy. In this course the Chinese-American relations are viewed as a history of people and cultural exchange, not just a top-down history of diplomacy and
politics. Using culture rather than politics or economics as a reference point, this course exams China-US relations since the 19th century to the present from
the interaction of cultural exchanges between the Chinese and Americans. Topics include: Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Messengers of the 19th century from
both, China and United States, The Internationalization of China and United States: Educators of the 1920s, the Journalists of the 1930s and 1940s, Literature
Imagination in China and United Sates, and Popular Culture and Sino-American Relations. The format of the course includes lectures, group discussions, debates
and audio-visual presentations.

ID 0153: Healthcare in Cuba

This interdisciplinary course examines Cubas history, international relations, political structure, culture, and economy. The theme of healthcare permeates all
course components. A one-week immersion in Cuba provides a cultural exchange opportunity from which youll gain perspectives on non-Western ways of
life. Activities in Cuba include daily lectures by Cuban scholars and policy makers on various health-related topics (universal healthcare, health tourism, medical
internationalism, health innovations, reproductive health, etc.) and related site visits (hospital, primary health clinic, etc.) in addition to cultural events and sites.
You will develop an independent research project that culminates in a final presentation and paper.

47
NS 0340: Introduction to Global Public Health
This course examines the social, economic and cultural factors impacting the health of societies worldwide and identifies key global health conditions. Principals
of disease prevention, risk reduction, and health promotion are applied to diverse populations in the USA and worldwide. Students will analyze current and
emerging global health priorities, including emerging infectious diseases, poverty, obesity, health inequities and conflicts and crises. Global issues related to the
impact of social policies on healthcare and equity, and needs of vulnerable populations are also examined.

PH 0299C: Special Topics: Thomistic Metaphysics

The focus of this course will be a close study, via reading, discussion and writing, of the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas. The single focus will be an in-depth
consideration of the most abstract and most primary of all the branches of philosophy. In the case of Thomass metaphysics, it will be argued that the study
of being will arrive ultimately and inevitably at existence itself that is, being not as thing, but as act. That is to say, Thomas developed a truly existential
metaphysics. Thus though the discipline called first philosophy by Aristotle, or the knowledge of that which is beyond the physical (meta-ta-physica in
Greek), forms the foundation for Aquinass metaphysics, it will be argued (and has been argued by thinkers like Maritain and Gilson and the Toronto school of
Thomism) that Aquinas goes beyond Aristotles ultimate being (namely, the unchanging and unchangeable outer spheres of the universe) to the act-of-being or
existence itself (ipsum esse in Thomas supple Latin). Thus the distinction between changeable (material) being and unchanging being is reducible to that which
has or possesses existence (hence that which is radically contingent) and that which is being by nature, namely (simply put) IS. From these foundations it will be
concluded that existence as we experience it is radically contingent and that this being-in-time is an ongoing gift from Being itself, as the earth is lit and heated
by the constant action of the sun.

PO 0190E: Special Topics: Turkey: A Nation of Contradictions in Turmoil

A familiar clich describes Turkey as a bridge between East and West linking Europe and Asia. However, its politics, society, and history are far more complex
than this oversimplified metaphor captures. Turkey is a nation of contradictions and contrasts. Though considered democratic, under President Erdoans
leadership, Turkey has increasingly begun to resemble a dictatorship, his opponents are jailed, and dissent is violently suppressed. And though Turkey is notionally
secular, Erdoans Justice and Development Party (AKP) has fed the creeping influence of religious conservatism. This is discernible in the AKP governments
acceleration of mosque construction, mandating religious education in public schools, denouncing abortion, and condemning homosexuality. The AKP
governments previous spokesman even opined that decent women shouldnt laugh loudly in public. Having long occupied an uneasy middle ground between a
secular West and Islamic East, Turkey has been drawn into the conflicts of its neighbors, including the refugee crisis, the Syrian civil war, and the rise of ISIS. The
aim of this course is to provide unique insight into Turkeys ongoing political turmoil by offering a timely look at a country that is caught at the center of many
of the changes and much of the upheaval in the Middle East today.

PO 0190F: Special Topics: State and Local Politics

This course examines the role of state and local governments within the United States. State and local governments are unique subnational governments with
their own political culture and identity and very greatly within and across the American political system. This course explores the political processes and the
institutions of state and local governments. The course highlights the multifaceted, and often difficult, issues facing sub-national governments; the philosophies of
state and local governments; their responsibility and function regarding election administration and voting; and their role within the larger national government.

PO 0190G: Special Topics: Seminar on Global Environmental Politics

The causes, consequences and potential solutions to environmental problems are increasingly important subjects in global politics. This seminar explores critical,
current issues in the theory and practice of global environmental politics. Readings and class discussion examine important new debates, including those on:
reason for policy effectiveness; international regimes; accountability; the 2015 Paris climate agreement; why global ozone policy remains a relatively unique
example of effective global environmental policy; the most prominent theoretical lenses employed by researchers and policy-makers; and the activities of
international institutions.

PY 0281C: Special Topics: Adult Development and Aging

Researchers who study the continued development of adults have only recently begun to understand the profound changes that occur from mid to late
life. While much is known about the development and changes that take place from infancy through adolescence, we are only at the beginning of really
understanding development throughout adulthood. This class will examine a number of key issues in the field of adult development and aging including
cognitive changes, diseases and disorders, social and personality changes, as well as successful aging and resiliency. It is expected that students will achieve both an
understanding of these key later-life developmental issues as well as an appreciation for the continuity and changes in development throughout the adult years.

RS 0299C: Special Topics: Tradition and Spirit of Place

When the Jesuit fathers bought a plot of land in Fairfield County with the intention of opening a high school and a college, what went through their minds
as they sought the permissions and the funding to begin this venture? How might they have imagined Fairfield University 75 years on? Would they be proud
of what has been accomplished, and would they see the students of today as the legitimate descendants of the students they admitted in their first class? In this
course we will look backwards to the beginnings of Fairfield University, trace its progress through the decades and think about how we move forward, faithful to
the tradition we have inherited. There is an interesting history here, always connected to the founding identity of the school as a Jesuit and Catholic university.
We will move between tracing the key moments in our development and exploring how they represent the living tradition of Jesuit education. And we will ask
about how memory, identity and community all come together as key components of this living tradition.

SA 0016: Introduction to 2-D Design

This course is an introduction to the aesthetic dimension of human existence through the appreciation and practice of pictorial design, a fundamental aspect
of our larger visual culture. Studio exercises will familiarize students with concepts such as line, rhythm, shape, balance, texture, and pattern. A hands-on studio
environment with computer-based assignments will involve students in practical and creative problem-solving. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop will be the
software programs used on all assignments. Across the semester students become more familiar and conversant in the elements and principles of design as well as
the two software programs.
