Term Project

Research Assignment Project

Related to your research on a topic which must
complement the material of the course.
Can be a literature research study,
a field study of a significant earthquake
resistant structure or its construction,
an experimental study, etc.,
which must involve certain aspects related to
seismic behaviour, design or construction.

You will work in a group of two or three

Project in Stages

Stage 1: Identification of Research Topic

Project topic will be first approved based on
your proposal describing the research topic
and its relationship with the course.
Duplication of topics will be eliminated to
achieve broadest range of topics possible.
Need to submit one paragraph description
of proposed research topic and work-plan,
such as a list of key references, source
materials, etc.

Stage 2: Written Report

Written report should summarize the
conclusions drawn from your research
studies.
A written typed report of eight pages of
text and another eight pages of
figures/tables, etc.
All source materials must be identified
and accurately acknowledges and any
figures adapted from another source must
be identified.

Project in Stages

Stage 3: Oral Report

A 10 min. PPT presentation of your work which
includes
o Introduction to the subject and why it is
important in seismic analysis and design
o Essential information derived
o Two or three most important conclusions
Typically you should plan for 10-12 slides and plan
your presentation for 8 to 10 minutes in length and at
least 5 minutes for Q&A.
A one-page abstract of the presentation and 2 to 3
key references must be distributed prior to
presentation.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating which includes, but is

not limited to, failure to indicate the source with
quotation marks or footnotes where appropriate if any
of the following are reproduced in the work submitted
by a student:
A phrase, written or oral.
A graphic element.
A proof.
Specific language.
An idea derived from the work, published or
unpublished, of another person.

Plagiarism is Serious

Consequences of plagiarism in this class range from

no credit to your project to failing grade in the course
to recommendation of SSAC of the Institute
Outside the class too nobody likes it - publishers and
professional societies have plagiarism policies too
Role of Internet in Plagiarism
Makes it easy to plagiarize
Simply cut and paste without proper quotation
and/or citations
More seriously buying it off the Internet
Also makes it easy to catch the acts of plagiarism
