Lesson Activation: (___4__minutes) How will you get the students excited about learning? How will you connect to students
experiences and prior learning?
I will begin the lesson by asking students what the main idea is? I will open up the reading notebook to the place where we have
written about main ideas. I will re-read the clues and ideas we had written. I will put the text on ants back up on the screen and
hightlight how we found the main idea.

Today, we are going to find the main ideas and details for a new text.

Instructional Presentation/ Sequence: (__20___ minutes) How will you achieve your content and language objectives? Please
refer back to your objectives.

After reviewing the materials we have discussed in previous classes, I will explain to students that we are going to read about
butterflies. I will tell them that we have four sentences and we must pick out the main ideas and details I will read the students a
new passage. I will explain that we have five options. One is our main idea and three others are the details. One of them is
wrong. Before I show students the examples, I will ask students what they think the article is about. What do they think the main
idea is. I will write these ideas down on the board. I will then ask students what they think the details are. Do they support the
main idea? I will then read the sentence choices to the students. I will show them on the overhead. I will ask students if they can
find the main idea. Is it similar to the ideas we wrote on the board? Why do you think this is the main idea? Once we have agreed
on what the main idea is I will glue it to the correct box. I will then read the other four sentences. I will remind students that one of
the sentences is wrong. I will also remind students that details support the main idea and helps show why the main idea is true. I
will select students to give me what sentences they think are details. We will complete the chart. I will then explain to students
that I have another passage. I want them to try to do this on their own. I will have the paper passer pass these out. I will have the
glue stick passer pass out the glue. Once every one has their paper I will read the passage aloud once. I will then read the
sentence choices aloud reminding students that one of the choices is wrong. I will then tell students they may cut out the
sentences and glue them where they think they go. I will collect papers when they are complete.
Closure/Evaluation: (__4___ minutes) How will you summarize and review what your students learned?

Once all papers have been collected, I will review the correct answers on the board so students know what the main idea and
details are.

Formal and Informal Assessment: (___1__ minutes) How will you know whether your students meet the content and language
objectives? Please include the types of assessments and what is being assessed. Please refer back to your objectives.

I will look at the students independent work to see if they were able to properly label the main idea and details so that I know that
they are able to find the main ideas and details that support it.
