TENEBRAE - Healey Good Friday 7.30 p.m. The word tenebrae is Latin for shadows.
The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion
story. The service starts out with the church in candlelight and the candles are gradually
extinguished as the story of Good Friday is told, finishing with the church in darkness.
People leave in silence. The lights are turned up (but remain dim) so that people can see
their way out. The purpose of the service is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment, and
agony of the events and it is left unfinished, because the story isnt over until Easter Day.
SERVICE OF LIGHT - Masham Easter Day 6.00 a.m. This is a dramatic service
which starts with lighting a fire in the churchyard and then processing with candles into
the dark church as we mark the Easter triumph of light over darkness, life over death. The
service will be followed by a cooked breakfast at Cogden House, Market Place.
REFLECTION On Palm Sunday we join together the triumphal entry into Jerusalem and
the Passion, recalling the swiftness of change from joy to pain, acclamation to humiliation.
Many read the passion narrative today, perhaps in a dramatised form, setting the scene for
the days ahead, while the liturgy of the day (and the hymns chosen) needs to reflect and
balance the spiritual fine-tuning required to do justice to both the detail and the bigger
picture of this most significant week in history.

ST. MARYS IS ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC A Coffee Morning on
Saturday 22nd April in St. Marys Church, Masham from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. At
10.30 a.m. there will be a performance of songs and other music performed in the church
during 2016. In aid of famine relief in East Africa.

A Concert at St Paul's Church Healey by the Choir of Aysgarth School and its Director of
Music, Matthew Atherton, playing the church's newly restored organ. The concert will be
followed by refreshments. Tickets 10 each (including refreshments) available from the
Masham Community Office 01765 680200.
PRAM PRAISE Masham A service for young children and their parents/carers. The
second Tuesday in the month. The next service will be on Tuesday 11 th April at 2.30 p.m.
A very short and informal service, followed by toys to play with and a chance for adults to
chat over coffee/tea. The service is geared to the needs of very young, pre-school,
children. Everything will finish in time for parents to collect older children from school.
