Materials Needed: -Computer (to show pictures slideshow) -Blank Paper -Markers/Crayons Formative Assessment: Students will draw a picture of a house that would belong in a very diverse neighborhood after seeing a picture of the neighborhood. Lesson Preparation: Essential Questions: 1. What diversity mean? 2. How can you show appreciation for the diversity of others. Engagement/Hook: Students will watch the slideshow about Embracing Differences. Instructional Procedures: Counselor(s): 1. Counselor will explain to students that our topic for today is diversity. 2. Counselor will ask students to answer essential questions listed above. 3. Counselor will inform students that they are going to look at a few pictures about diversity and they will have conversations within their groups about what they see and/or interpret from the pictures. 4. Counselor will show the students the pictures one at a time and will prompt the students with questions to answer regarding their interpretation of the picture. Counselor will ensure that students are practicing the skill of accepting differences of opinions of others. 5. After showing students the final picture of the houses, the counselor will explain that students are to pretend they are moving to this neighborhood and they must create a unique and diverse house to live in that will fit in the neighborhood. 6. Students will create their house (by drawing/coloring it). Students: 1.Students will listen as counselor explains the topic for the day. 2. Students will participate in the discussion about the essential questions listed above. 3. Students will listen as the counselor explains the activity for the day. 4. Students will view the pictures and participate in the discussion about what they interpret from the picture making sure to practice their skill of listening and acceptance of possible differing opinions. 5. Students listen as the counselo explains the last part of the activity. 6. Students will create their unique and diverse house.
