F & G Detection system Using of Corrosion resistant pipes, FM approved & UL

listed valves

SP 1070-2 ( SP for F & G system for onshore & offshore facilities)

The scope of this Specification covers the minimum requirements for the design,
engineering, supply and commissioning of new Fire & Gas Systems and related field
devices.

3.4 General Requirements of Field Devices

3.4.10 All field devices shall be certified (e.g., ATEX, CSA, UL, NRTL), approved
and labeled for use in the assigned hazardous area. Field devices shall have an
ingress protection rating of at least IP65 (NEMA 4X).

NFPA- 72 (NATIONAL FIRE ALARM CODE)

A.5.11.1 Piping between the sprinkler system and a pressure actuated alarm-
initiating device should be galvanized or of nonferrous metal or other approved
corrosion-resistant material of not less than 9.5 mm (38 in.) nominal pipe size.

NFPA- 13 (STD for the Installation of Sprinkler system)

NFPA 20012 (CLEAN AGENT FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS)

A.8.4.6 Corrosion resistance is required to prevent clogging of nozzles with scale.
Examples of suitable materials are hot dipped galvanized steel piping inside and out
or stainless steel.

8.4.6* For marine applications, all piping, valves, and fittings of ferrous materials
shall be protected inside and out against corrosion except as permitted in 8.4.6.1.
NFPA -20 (INSTALLATION OF STATIONARY PUMPS FOR FIRE PROTECTION)
4.13.1.2 Where corrosive water conditions exist, steel suction pipe shall be
galvanized or painted on the inside prior to installation with a paint recommended
for submerged surfaces.

Sprinkler systems are unique mechanical systems because they remain dormant for long periods, yet
their performance is essential since they provide protection of lives and property. Once a system operates
it must deliver adequate water to control or suppress a fire.

Why Is Corrosion a Problem in These Systems?

Corrosion damage increases the interior surface roughness of pipes beyond the
anticipated conditions reflected in the design of sprinkler systems.

Due to the formation of nodules and corrosion deposits in the pipes, the surface
roughness exceeds the expectations. Additionally, the corrosion deposition has
caused significant occlusion of the interior cross-sectional area. This has effectively
reduced the hydraulic diameter of the pipe. Therefore, the pipes would restrict
water flow and pressure provided to the sprinklers.

How Does Corrosion Affect the Re liability of Sprinkler Systems?

The reliability of sprinkler systems can be measured in terms of both operation and
performance. Operational reliability is a measure of the probability that the system
or component will operate as intended when needed.

Performance reliability is a measure of the adequacy of the system after it has

operated.

The reliability of sprinkler systems includes four primary factors: design, equipment,
installation, and maintenance. When any of these factors are deficient, the system
inevitably will prove unreliable, and a failure will be observed. The failure could be
observed as lack of response to fire conditions, operation without a fire, or inability
of the sprinkler system to control or suppress a fire.

Failures can be grouped into two categories: Failed-safe and failed-dangerous.

Failures when no fire event has occurred are considered to be failed-safe, and
failures that involve components or systems to be deliver when needed but could
not are considered to be failed-dangerous.
