Hos 2:11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her
solemn feasts.

In the time of the end, every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made in the law at the time the
Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. PK 678

Building Blocks of God’s Sacred Calendar
Biblical Calendar Basics
A Primer for studying the calendar given to Moses
“As a people and as individuals we need to have a deeper sense of our duty to God and
our responsibility to the world. There should be more earnest study of the Scriptures. I
have been deeply impressed with the importance of studying the book of Daniel in
connection with the smaller prophets, especially Malachi. And we need to give careful
attention also to the lessons taught in the building of the tabernacle and the temple,
and in the temple service. Through the prophets God has given a delineation of what
will come to pass in the last days of this earth's history, and the Jewish economy is full
of instruction for us.” {RH, November 10, 1896 par. 11}

Introduction: Asking the right questions

During the period of the Millerites in the mid 1800’s, the time in earth’s history that the
Seventh Day Adventist Church was forming, many biblical truths came to light. Probably the
most essential truth to come out of the Adventist 7th Month movement was the determination
of October 22, 1844; the 10th day of the 7th Month in God’s Holy Biblical Calendar; The Day of
Atonement. In order to determine the correct date of October 22, the Millerites had to
determine which calendar to use. It was the calendar of scripture that they had to grapple with.
The date of October 22 1844 is one of the essential foundational cornerstones of the SDA
church. We should know how it is determined.

There are two (2) fundamental questions that have to be asked about this calendar.

1. Is the calendar of scripture used by the Millerites still valid for us, today and
in the end times of earth’s history? One has to consider the implications of
all of the appointed times (Lev 23) given by God in answering this question.

2. Did God pinpoint the 7th day Sabbath on the same calendar, for us to
worship Him? In other words, does the 7th day Sabbath belong on the
Biblical calendar, or does it belong on the papal Roman calendar? This
should be a fundamental doctrinal question for Seventh Day Adventists.

The scriptures, references, etc. in this study may be helpful in

gaining a basic understanding of the timekeeping framework of
the biblical calendar outlined in the Old Testament. Hopefully it
will be the catalyst to further your study of this vital issue. This is
by no means an in-depth or exhaustive study. So get your Bibles
and Concordances out and go exploring.

2
In this paper, many scriptural references are cited pinpointing
specific days of the month. One has to ask the question; which
calendar do the specified times belong to? Bear in mind that the
framework of these specified times was given to Moses about 700
years before any evidence of a pagan or papal Roman calendar
appeared. And even then, the first Roman calendar had no
resemblance to the calendar we have today, and it was “lunar” in
nature.

Signs and Seasons: How it all began

Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day
from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
(KJV)

Gen 1:14 And Elohim said, “Let lights come to be in the expanse of the heavens to separate the
day from the night, and let them be for signs and appointed times, and for days and
years, (ISR)

Psa 104:19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. (KJV)

Psa 104:19 He made the moon for appointed times; The sun knows its going down.
(ISR)

Jeremiah 31:35-36 “Thus saith Yahweh, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the
ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth
the sea when the waves thereof roar; Yahweh of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart
from before me, saith Yahweh, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation
before me for ever.”

Psalms 136:7-9 “To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: The
sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: The moon and stars to rule by
night: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Ecclesiasticus 43:6-10 (Sirach)

He made the moon also to serve in her season for a declaration of times, and a sign of the
world. From the moon is the sign of feasts, a light that decreaseth in her perfection. The
month is called after her name, increasing wonderfully in her changing, being an
instrument of the armies above, shining in the firmament of heaven; The beauty of
heaven, the glory of the stars, an ornament giving light in the highest places of the Lord. At the
commandment of the Holy One they will stand in their order, and never faint in their watches.

Are the “Appointed Times” given By the Creator still
valid today?
Is the 7th day Sabbath still valid today? 7th Day Sabbathkeepers would agree. But consider this.
In the days of the sacrificial system, sacrifices and offerings were also required on the Sabbath,
as well as the daily sacrifices and offerings. The sacrifices and offerings were fulfilled and done
away with at the cross, and are no longer required.

But what about the Sabbath? We still observe, honor and keep the 7th day Sabbath holy, but
without the sacrifices and offerings of animals. Other sacrifices and offerings on Sabbaths have
replaced them.

So if the Sabbath, minus the ceremonial sacrifices, as part of the appointed times or feasts is
still observed, why not the other appointed times?

Notice in the following scriptures the use of the word “for ever” when referring to the
appointed times.

What did Ellen White have to say about the abolishing
of the sacrifices and offerings?
The ceremonial system was made up of symbols pointing to Christ, to His sacrifice and His
priesthood. This ritual law, with its sacrifices and ordinances, was to be performed by the
Hebrews until type met antitype in the death of Christ, the Lamb of God that taketh away the
sin of the world. Then all the sacrificial offerings were to cease. It is this law that
Christ "took . . . out of the way, nailing it to His cross." Colossians 2:14. PP365

In consequence of continual transgression, the moral law was repeated in awful grandeur from
Sinai. Christ gave to Moses religious precepts which were to govern the everyday life. These
statutes were explicitly given to guard the ten commandments. They were not
shadowy types to pass away with the death of Christ. They were to be binding upon
man in every age as long as time should last. These commands were enforced by the power of
the moral law, and they clearly and definitely explained that law. {RH, May 6, 1875 par. 10}

We are to become familiar with the Levitical law in all its bearings; for it contains
rules that must be obeyed; it contains the instruction that if studied will enable us
to understand better the rule of faith and practice that we are to follow in our dealings with
one another. No soul has any excuse for being in darkness. Those who receive Christ by faith
will receive also power to become the sons of God. 1BC 1110

He did not stop with giving them the precepts of the Decalogue. The people had shown
themselves so easily led astray that He would leave no door of temptation unguarded.
Moses was commanded to write, as God should bid him, judgments and laws giving minute
instruction as to what was required. These directions relating to the duty of the people to God,
to one another, and to the stranger were only the principles of the Ten
Commandments amplified and given in a specific manner, that none need err. They
were designed to guard the sacredness of the ten precepts engraved on the tables
of stone. PP 364

The light esteem in which the law of God is held, even by religious leaders, has been productive
of great evil. The teaching which has become so widespread, that the divine
statutes are no longer binding upon men, is the same as idolatry in its
effect upon the morals of the people. Those who seek to lessen the claims of
God's holy law are striking directly at the foundation of the government of families and
nations. Religious parents, failing to walk in His statutes, do not command their household to
keep the way of the Lord. The law of God is not made the rule of life… A reformation in
this respect is needed--a reformation which shall be deep and broad. Parents need to
reform; ministers need to reform; they need God in their households. PP 143

God’s Statutes are connected to the descent of the Holy Spirit!

The prophecies in the eighteenth of Revelation will soon be fulfilled. During the
proclamation of the third angel's message, "another angel" is to "come down from heaven,
having great power," and the earth is to be "lighted with his glory."…
During the loud cry… the light of present truth will be seen flashing everywhere…
The Word declares: "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all
your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and
a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I
will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my
statutes." This is the descent of the Holy Spirit, sent from God to do its office
work…
As men, women, and children proclaim the gospel, the Lord will open the eyes of
the blind to see his statutes, and will write upon the hearts of the truly penitent
7
his law… Other chapters will open before us, and in order to discern their
meaning, we shall need keen perception. RH Oct. 13, 1904 (Article, The Closing
Work)

What are the “Appointed Times” given By the Creator?

In ancient biblical times, prior to the time of Christ and His eventual crucifixion, physical sacrifices
and offerings were required as part of the “appointed times.” As well as the appointed times listed
below, this also included the “daily” appointed times of “morning” and “evening” in the sanctuary
service, with its physical offerings and sacrifices. These were required in addition to the annual and
Sabbath offerings and sacrifices. It is these physical offerings and sacrifices that were fulfilled by
Christ at His death.

Then all the sacrificial offerings were to cease. It is this law that
Christ "took . . . out of the way, nailing it to His cross."
Colossians 2:14. PP365

their seasons.

(This seems to infer a special relationship or connection between the 7th day
Sabbath and the Day of Atonement Sabbath)

Types of days in the calendar of Moses

Sabbaths
Eze 46:1 Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east
shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of
the new moon it shall be opened.

One can easily see that the Sabbath day and the new moon day are separate days as
indicated by the meaning of the Hebrew words:

Eze 46:1 ThusH3541 saithH559 the LordH136 GOD;H3069 The gateH8179 of the

Amo 8:5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the
sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and
falsifying the balances by deceit?

Isa 66:23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one
sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

2 Kings 4:23 “And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new
moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.”

12
How is the New Moon Day counted in the biblical
calendar?
The following account of Joshua and the Israelites at Jericho points out the fact that the
New Moon day, the first day of the biblical calendar month is a separate day, and not
counted with the work days and Sabbaths.

Joshua and Jericho: The Math Problem of the missing Sabbath;

Or would God have the Israelites marching in battle on the 7th
Day Sabbath?
There appears to be a math problem affecting the 7th day Sabbath in the account
of Joshua and the march around Jericho for 7 days. The Israelites were
commanded to march around Jericho once a day for 6 days. Then they were
commanded to march around Jericho 7 times on the 7th day, for a count of 7 days
overall. This means that they marched around Jericho 7 days in a row. Regardless
of the order of the days, one of these days should have been a Sabbath, according
to the calendar reckoning we use today with a "continuous weekly cycle." So here
are the points and questions that arise out of this scenario.

Yahweh had just given Jericho into the hands of the Joshua and the Israelites. Scripture
indicates it was probably Christ himself that was there with Joshua.

The Israelites had just emerged from 40 years in the wilderness and were keeping the
Sabbath.

Would Yahweh have given Jericho into the hands of the Israelites if they were not obedient
to His commandments and law?

Did Joshua and the children of Israel march around Jericho on a Sabbath? In the New
Testament, examples are given of activities done on the Sabbath by Jesus (or others) that
He apparently approved of.

If they marched around Jericho 7 days, why is there no mention of a Sabbath? Since the
Sabbath is so important to God, you would think that it would be included in the Jericho
account.

Why did Ellen White not catch this "math" problem? She has a lot to say about the account
of Joshua and the march at Jericho, but there is no mention in her writings referring to a
7th day Sabbath.

First Month; Abib; Passover

The references in Joshua 5 point out that the Israelites were camped near Jericho in
the first month, where they observed the Passover.

Jos 5:10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the
fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
Jos 5:11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover,
unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.

13
Jos 5:12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land;
neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land
of Canaan that year.

Second Month
The verses from The Book of Jasher points out that the assault on Jericho began in the
second month on the first day of the month, which is New Moon Day. (The book of
Jasher is referred to in the book of Joshua, and in the book of 2nd Samuel)

Jasher 88:14 And it was in the second month, on the first day of the month, that the
Lord said to Joshua, Rise up, behold I have given Jericho into thy hand with all the people
thereof; and all your fighting men shall go round the city, once each day, thus shall you do
for six days.
Jasher 88:17 And on the seventh day they went round the city seven times, and the priests blew
upon trumpets.

The verses in Joshua 6 point out the instructions to march around Jericho, which is
spanned over a 7 day consecutive period.

Jos 6:2 And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the
king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.
Jos 6:3 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once.
Thus shalt thou do six days.
Jos 6:4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the
seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with
the trumpets.
Jos 6:11 So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into
the camp, and lodged in the camp.
Jos 6:14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so
they did six days.
Jos 6:15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning
of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they
compassed the city seven times.

The question remains; where is the 7th day Sabbath in a consecutive

period of a week of 7 days. According to the “continuous weekly cycle”
there should be a 7th day Sabbath included in this scenario.

(1Ki 8:66) On the eighth day he sent the people away: and they blessed the king, and went
unto their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the LORD had done for David
his servant, and for Israel his people.

(2Ch 7:9) And in the eighth day they made a solemn assembly: for they kept the dedication of
the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.

24
(2Ch 29:17) Now they began on the first day of the first month to sanctify, and on the eighth
day of the month came they to the porch of the LORD: so they sanctified the house of the
LORD in eight days; and in the sixteenth day of the first month they made an end.

(Neh 8:18) Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law
of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly,
according unto the manner.

(Eze 43:27) And when these days are expired, it shall be, that upon the eighth day, and so
forward, the priests shall make your burnt offerings upon the altar, and your peace offerings;
and I will accept you, saith the Lord GOD.

Scriptures that point specifically to the 15th day of the

month in the biblical calendar. (When referring to days of the month,
the 15th day is the second 7th day Sabbath of each month in the biblical calendar)

(Exo 16:1) And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of
Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of
the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

(Lev 23:6) And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto
the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

(Lev 23:34) Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month
shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

(Lev 23:39) Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit
of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath,
and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.

(Num 28:17) And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened
bread be eaten.

(Num 29:12) And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy convocation;
ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days:

(Num 33:3) And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the
first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high
hand in the sight of all the Egyptians.

(Est 9:18) But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day
thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and
made it a day of feasting and gladness.

(Est 9:21) To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month
Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

(Eze 32:17) It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth day of the month, that the
word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

(Eze 45:25) In the seventh month, in the fifteenth day of the month, shall he do the like in the
feast of the seven days, according to the sin offering, according to the burnt offering, and
according to the meat offering, and according to the oil.

Cycle of Seven: The True and the False

Where is the “week” in the biblical calendar?

In the original biblical calendar, there is no “week” as we know it today. At least, not in
terms of a “continuous weekly cycle,” as we have been led to believe. There is no evidence in
scripture to prove this. In the biblical calendar, there is a continuous weekly cycle each month,
with four seven day periods including Sabbaths, in succession. Each month, at the new moon,
the cycle resets in harmony with the lunar cycle. It appears that the “continuous weekly cycle”
we have come to believe was more than likely brought with the Israelites when they left
captivity in Babylon.

The Modern Planetary Week: Satan’s false cycle of seven

Encyclopedia Britannica has this to say about the modern “week” and the calendar:

In the 21st century, we take for granted a seven-day week. However, in some ancient cultures,
the length of the week differed. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica:

“Among primitive peoples, it was common to count moons (months) rather than days, but
later a period shorter than the month was thought more convenient, and an interval between
market days was adopted. In West Africa some tribes used a four-day interval; in central Asia
five days was customary; the Assyrians adopted five days and the Egyptians, 10 days, whereas
the Babylonians attached significance to the days of the lunation that were multiples of seven.
In ancient Rome, markets were held at eight-day intervals; because of the Roman method of
inclusive numeration, the market day was denoted nundinae (“ninth-day”) and the eight-day
week, an inter nundium.” Measurement of time and types of calendars: Standard units and cycles”;

God’s true “cycle of seven?”

In recent years, the relatively new science of ChronoBiology has discovered a previously
unknown cycle or rhythm in the human body, as well as other living things. This cycle or
rhythm is referred to as a “circaseptan” and simply means a cycle of seven. Science is still
learning about this and other cycles in the human body, which they say was a major surprise.
Scientists have found these 7 day cycles are of very ancient origin, appearing in primitive one-
celled organisms, and are thought to be present even in bacteria.
In humans, scientists found the circaseptan rhythm to be the key coordinating rhythm
for a complex myriad of cycles, all harmonizing to make up our body clock. The biological base
of seven-day cycles (also called heptads or circaseptans) clearly gives this amazing building
block priority in time: it existed before culture or religion ever recognized a seven day week in
history. Such an intricate, indisputable base and such a fundamental common design require
us to reconsider this double question: is there a common beginning, a common designer of all
life?
Historians have long held other controvertible views about the origin of the 7 day week.
If the seven-day week is an invention of culture and religion, as most historians would have us
believe, how do we explain innate circaseptan rhythms in "primitive" algae, rats, plants and
face flies? These forms of life have no calendar, can't read the Torah and don't know Saturn
from Santa Claus.
Here are the questions we need to ask. Is our cycle of seven tuned to God’s system of
timekeeping found in scripture; or is it tuned to the fixed 7 day week found in the papal
Gregorian calendar? And if we are not following the right cycle, is it making us sick and crazy?

New Moon Day is the first day of each biblical month. The signal for the beginning of New
Moon day is the visible crescent moon. The visible crescent can usually be seen following
sunset at the end of the 29th or 30th day.

This calendar does not harmonize with the papal Gregorian calendar we use today. At the
beginning of each month, at the new moon, the calendar is reset.

The consistency in this calendar is seen in the fact that Sabbaths are always on the 8th, 15th,
22nd, and 29th days of the biblical month. More than coincidentally, the quarter phases of the
moon align with Sabbaths.

This is the only calendar given throughout history, that man cannot rearrange to suit himself.
Satan continues his assault on the biblical calendar of God’s timekeeping system by confusing
how it is determined.

Where are the New Moon days located on the Roman
Gregorian calendar?

God’s calendar or
Rome’s Calendar?
Exodus 12 pinpoints the
beginning of the year and
month. “This shall be the
beginning of months for
you.”

God’s new year begins in the

spring at the new moon near
the vernal equinox, when the
barley is green and will be
ready for wave sheaf on the
16th day of the month.

Each biblical month begins

with the new moon,
regardless of how that new
moon is reckoned, dark, or
visible crescent.

The adjacent roman

Gregorian calendar for 2010
clearly shows the beginning
of months are not set by the
new moon.

The Biblical calendar and the

roman Gregorian calendar do
not work in concert, no
matter how hard you try to
reconcile them.

In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored.
The breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was
changed by man, is to be repaired. PK 678

God, through the Holy Spirit, is preparing to restore His church to the biblical principles found
in the Judaic contours of its formative years. The way it will happen is not by an "outpouring"
of the Holy Spirit alone but through a Word of God revival.

Here is the promise of God:

"My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon
the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: (Deut 32:2).

The latter rain will be a rain of truth. If the Church needs anything today, it needs the
following: ". . . the washing of water by the word." (Eph 5:25-26)

We are together in believing on the Christ of the doctrine but remain divided on the doctrine
of the Christ.
